Problem editing HOSTS file

    I'm trying to add a website to the HOSTS file (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\) so that it will block access to the site.

    The problem is that when I try to save the edited file, it says
    Cannot create the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS file

Make sure that the path and filename are correct



    Help!

    Browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\
    Right-click on HOSTS
    Open With... Notepad.
    Edit. Save. Close. Change to Read-only.

    Or you could do what I did...

    create a shortcut on your start menu pointing at:
    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"
    (leave in the quote-marks)

    Call it "Edit local hosts file" or something.

    Then again, perhaps you're getting that error for another reason. In Windows XP, the hosts file is located in this folder, but in other versions of Windows it's located elsewhere. What version of Windows are you running?

    Incidentally, why would the file need to be read only, Karoma?

    I cannot save the file (see above). It is not currently marked Read Only so that is not the problem and I am using Windows XP. I have Admin rights.
