Here's a question for anyone interested:

if you were absolutely fed up with everything, intent on travelling, not wanting to wait any longer, female, single, loved the sun, and got less than 2.500€ where would you go tomorrow?

South Africa, you'd get flights for €1000 return and have enough cash to back pack around for a month or two.

    ::sigh::

Wish I was back there now

Thailand => Phi Phi Island, while one of the more expensive islands, 1500 euro would do you two months or so and thats with a couple of drinks and meals each night/day

She doesn't have anywhere near enough for the states/Australia unless going for a week or two

2 and a half K would keep you going in the Greek Isles (specially the Cyclades) for the rest of the season (around two months).

I've heard they are pretty dead and depressing to go to in the winter, as in cold and everywhere is closed? and is that including flight over and all?
is hard to find jobs there and do they speak english??
id loooooove to go to Greece but i always thought it was more a of a holiday location for a week or so?
    thanksssssssssssssssss

The reason I never mentioned South America is because I know three girls who went over there together, and all of them were mugged on different occasions. They were followed around at various stages of their holiday and were basically shitting it the entire time they were there. This was just their experience and I'm sure people have had a great time in South America, but for a single woman going over on her own I'd have to say don't do it.

Try New Zealand, everyone seems to be going there. If you plan on having a working holiday you'd need more money, but if you're going with 2500 for fun, then you'll be grand. It's around 1200 to get in, and the euro kicks ass in comparison to their currency. 1000 is 2000 dollars over there, and that's enough to live on for a few weeks easily. Talk to your local usit office!

Yes, but not the whole state. California is about 850 miles long and about 250 miles wide. I would recommend either the San Francisco Bay area or the So Cal beach area. If you base yourself in a beach city like Balboa, you have the best of OC, and are only about 2 hours away from either the mountains (Big Bear at 12,000 feet), or 2 hours from the desert (Palm Springs). Of course, if you travelled during rush hours, it would be much longer than 2 hours.

OP: If you are "female, single, and loved the sun," then Balboa would be ideal (or nextdoor Newport Beach), with lots of tan single guys from the several universities and businesses that surround the area. And Balboa is very safe at night. If you burn a lot of your euros flying, then you could find an inexpensive motel on Newport Blvd. (lots of them) in nearby Costa Mesa (city) and then drive or bike the 4 miles to Balboa Island and Balboa Penninsula. Balboa probably has one of the best beaches in California. I know, cause I am overseas and currently live in the immediate area and frequent Balboa beach and surf.

I'd recommend Ko Phangan before Phi Phi. Not as expensice or commercial and the parties are magic, especially the Full moon parties! Get a beach hut in Haad Riin on either the Sunrise or Sunset beach, pure heaven.

Thailand definitely, koh samui or koh phangan, they are both islands within a short ferry hop of each other. If you wanted a job you could always buy a degree over there & teach english :D Although personally I wouldn't bother, you can live very cheaply over there. These will give you an idea http://www.kohsamui.org/ http://www.kohphangan.com/

As for america, I wouldn't bother, full of yanks ;)

new zealand has lots of sun, but it isn't everywhere all year round. 'the winterless north' would be a good place to start for catching rays for example.

i loved it but i wouldn't recommend it if you want to avoid the irish hordes such as in australia (although it isn't as bad).

how about fiji? go to a small island (caqalai was my favourite) and get to know the locals. or crew for a yachtie and island hop on the cheap. bit far away though so you might use up a lot of cash getting there.

oh and for all thos who have been to the states, ( aprt from florida and that area as i have already been) as in OC and all that, are they all not just very yankee as stated above or that just a silly presumption that they would all be superficial and ignorant over there??

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiji

this will tell you the basics.

people are really friendly, especially the native fijians. there are 2 major ethnic groups, fijians and fijian-indians. broadly speaking the fijians own all the land and the indians run all the services although obviously this is a generalisation (it's a throwback to when the british ruled and needed manpower, so they brought people over from india). cost wise it varies wildly depending on which island you're on and what you do. on caqalai for example i brought a tent with me and paid the equivalent of about €10 for camping and 3 meals a day. and if i remember correctly it cost about €25 per scuba dive. in other places it was more expensive (and if you went to some of the 'party islands' you could be paying 3 or 4 times that much). i can't really remember costs to be honest so looking up lonelyplanet.com or something would be your best bet.

one thing though, you should ring the foreign office about the political situation. there was a coup in 2000 which got them kicked out of the commonwealth. they got back in the next year and all was well when i was there (last autumn). i do remember reading something about increasing tensions around december time so it might be worth chekcing out. should be fine i'd imagine (blind faith, nothing like it :) )

You can go to Budapest for under E100 and travel down to Lake Ballaton to a little town called Siofuk. Its all dirt cheap there the people are lovely the food is tasty the drink is for nothing and there beautiful weather there until the end of October. I went for a few weeks last year and had an absolute blast.
    Its also very safe.

hmm i didn't expect my choice of destination to be ridiculed (sp)

Why Canada? I don't know but i will be there early next year, but if i wasn't living in Ireland at the moment, it probably would be where i would be living.

Australia because a very good mate lives waaaay outside perth and also i have Aunts and Uncles there who i would like to see them

Anyway why would austrailia been "cramped with Irish" stop me from going there. What is the big issue about it?

I am shocked at this statement, well the "not as commercial part", are you insane, have you been to Phi Phi. Phangnan is like Santa Ponsa compared to Phi Phi and thats excluding the bent coppers and travel agents. You couldn't of been to Phi Phi:eek:

Two and a half thousand would take you quite far.

You could pack a rucksack, get a cheap Ryanair flight somewhere in Europe and euro-rail for a couple of months (or longer if you got work along the way - hostels are always great places to work cos you get your accomodation free ;) ).
