Getting rid of Landline for VOIP - steps involved?

I have have received my new broadband connection from a great wireless company (well done www.fwi.ie) and I want to get rid of my home phone (its currently costing me about €120 over 2 months)
My current provider is Perlico at the moment, but I presume the rental is with eircom.

Basically if I cancel my account - can I keep my phone number and use it through VOIP? What are the best steps at doing this? Do I wait until I have VOIP set up and running properly first and then cancel the rental/account?

I want to save on these bills as myself and the wife do have mobiles aswell and this is just an added expense that I would love to get rid of. We would still like to have the function of receiving calls from family on the existing landline number (but through VOIP - does this make sense?)

Anyone do something similar and could advise?

You must port your existing number to a VoIP provider BEFORE you cancel the landline. It can be done, but it is (like anything that facilitates competition in the telecoms market) a slow and laborious process.

Don't plan on cancelling the landline before Christmas - it may take that long to find a VoIP provider that you're satisfed with, and to get the number ported over.

Thanks for that - appreciate all your great advice Foxwood!

Will start the search for the providers and then think of cancelling!

As far as I know Blueface are the only VOIP company that you can port your number to.
