A lot of people go on about how proud they are to be Irish. But the big question is....

What have YOU done lately to make Ireland a better place?

well I didn't vote for the PD's, thats more than a lot of people did. And I resist the urge to burn down certain garda stations, thats got to be worth something.

Ive heartily and proudly contributed to Ireland always topping or coming in the top 3 of those EU wide surveys of country by country binge drinking, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and STI rates. I also will usually shout up the ra when Athenry is played.

I've done fúck all. Oh I pay my taxes, obey the law and try not to infere with anyone who lives here but wrt to the country itself I couldn't care less. It would make little difference to me if I was German or Norwegian or British. But because I just happen to be born in a randomly assigned spot I'm supposed to feel affinity to this land? That's brainwashing of the highest order.

i always throw my cigarette butts out the window of my car while driving, this provides street sweepers with jobs thus paying taxes and not scabbing off the state. it also improves the ecenomy.

Paid the bloke on the toll bridge last week, thus giving the government money to spend on what they see as helping the irish nation, for eg a new new jet, or another immense metal knitting needle in Dublin City Centre. Etc.

I refrain from walking around Cambridge with a bottle in my hand singing 'toor-a-loo' at 10 in the morning on a Saturday. It helps de-mythify (new word! :D) the stereotype of the Irish drunkard.

You may be surprised to learn that it does not improve the economy, but rather it diverts resources away from where they could be more effctively used.

Good for you! I had to give a speech live on television on why Sellafield should be closed. I was as nervous as hell as no-one had told me it was going to be live and I was still slightly drunk from the night before.

interesting, from my own personal experience, i thought you used your personality as a profylactic.

anyway, is there a minimum line by which we should be measured and feel good about ourselves as having been proactive towards doing something for your country?

i mean, is paying your bills, not stabbing anyone, putting your litter in the bin, ensuring your kids go to school and generally being a 'good' citizen not enough?
is there something special above and beyond this that means you are doing something for your country?

like living in another country and questioning others on the motives behind their national pride?

Oh, and have paid over twenty f*cking grand in tax so far this year so that's helping all the fat TDs and lazy wasters too.

i fail to see what living in another country has to do with anything.
after all, people often question the amount of pride that americans show.

i asked at what level does is the marker for 'having done something for your country'.
maybe you missed that bit while trying to read something entirely different into my posts.

youre very tetchy lately. modding AH getting to you already?

my remark was actually directed at the OP, who has their location listed as australia.

i see. the quote belonging to me didnt reflect it.

anyway, the point is still the same, and i still dont know what location has to do with it.
in fact, perhaps you could do extra stuff for your country while in foreign lands?
