I still haven't got any communication from Trinity

Starting this year. My CAO is confirmed, I've got the letter telling me so.
If I'm being over anxious here, please forgive me. But I've worked so hard to get into Trinity I really would like to just get my little card now and know all possible hiccups have been avoided. Have many of you gotten anything?

I'm going to be doing Postgrad, got a letter on Monday - registration is late September. For Undergrads it seems to be early October. Drop them an email if you're worried though it seems like early days yet.

OneStepMore I'm starting an undergraduate degree in October and haven't received anything yet. It's a bit annoying because I'm one of those people who enjoys opening mail and devouring its content, but no one I've heard of starting in Oct has received anything either. Sooooo, relax!

Trinity start its information pack sending until about two weeks before term starts, I've heard, it would be nice but I'm guessing that they want to get all the rounds of offers over with and send out information all together as Trinity starts quite late compared to other universities.

I too enjoy devouring mail content but I guess I'll just ahve to sit here and twiddle my thumbs...

I'm in the same boat as you guys. Starting an undergraduate degree in October and I'd love to get my Orientation pack ASAP. We have to be patient, lol.

I was looking at the thread from this time last year and it seems that theyll probably be sent out next week- tho if u didnt get one i wouldnt worry, college dosent start for a whole month yet. (if you got a little card thingy from the CAO saying they got your acceptance then you can be sure youre in!)

Don't worry, I was the same last year, you've weeks left, :D

In the same boat eagerly awaiting, but hey loads of time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 194 ✭✭Dave Larkin

What exactly comes with the pack?

More importantly, does it depend on the course you're doing? I saw a UCD version, and it seems they send out information about the course in great detail.

I can't wait to get a personal TCD e-mail address. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :D

Then when you graduate they cut you off ridiculously quickly. It's quite an abandoning feeling (apparently). So don't get too attached to it. Stick with your gmail tbh.

July 13th. No access to computers from then but the email address works for a while after that and the swipe cards continue to work also. Still a bit **** though, It'd make more sense to have the option of a stay of execution if you're continuing on to do a postgrad, it'd probably save some hassle, but that's the last thing admin are going to consider. ***** the lot of them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 212 ✭✭sully-gormo

whats usually in the info packs?

Info about registration, freshers' week, your tutor, faculty meet-up, that type of thing. I think the other mail out comes from CSC, SU etc a bit later. That is, if there actually IS a second mail out (or if it is chucked in with it), and that I wasn't hallucinating before.

Our swipes will work till oct when the new cards come out afaik. As for email, your account is deleted on july 13th with everything else, but if you have a forward to another email address setup then that works for a year iirc.

Its all nice and automated, it would require about 10x more work to deal with indvidual people who are continuing to do a pg(which costs money...) , only way to avoid that would be not to expire accounts till oct,but then that would go against college policies for these things :) [also there may be some convenice aspect, i'm not sure how the changeover from UG student number to PG student number thing goes.

You back for a pg in col ed?

It's about getting mail from Trinity. Apparently all the societies and things will be sending mail to everyone about events and activities etc. If you don't want to receive these mails, you have to send the postcard back within 7 days.

flat msc or msc leading to phd? sounds nifty anyway, my understanding of the area wouldn't be great but does look interesting....

Just got mine today, it is quite good but nothing about halls.

Do halls send out a seperate info pack, or is there much to know? I've read the residents handbook.

Any advice re halls from those of you who have been there already? What do we need to bring, what is the kitchen stocked with?
Our own pots, pans, everything I take it?

Oi! your in Waterford, right? Ahh well! I guess us Cork people can't expect the same postal service as the rest of the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

Yup, got it in the post at 2pm - and our postal service is pretty sh*t...!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭Papillon87

Yes I got mine this morning! Ooohh all the information! I can't pronounce my tutor's name, though, which could be embarrassing. So I think I'll just go with "Sir" :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

no one calls anyone sir in uni...... people with hard to pronounce names just have to get used to it....

Msc then PhD. The funding's there for the full thing anyways but I can call it a day after the masters if I like, but have no intention of copping out like that!

There are hundreds of staff, and thousands of students. So they usually get tutors from your area. As an example, I was in Theoretical Physics, and my tutor is from Botany. Relation? Science!

Got my Trinners pack today aswell - no info about my tutor though. Should I contact them about this?

Off to the mature student orientation (health science) in the Hamilton Building on Mon 18th - any one else attending this?

Also, how difficult is the Chemistry pre-lim for anyone who didn't do chemistry for the Leaving?

Mine's from geography (which comes under natural science) very offstandish man but really helped when I needed it. It's a bit of a lottery with the aul tutors to be honest.

With regards Michael Lyons, all I really know is that he has a strongish Cork accent, an oddity for lecturers. I didn't go to chemistry lectures in 1st and 2nd year much if at all.

    Edit:

I went to it though I had done chem for leaving (went with my mate who hadn't). He didn't find it so bad. There's no homework or anything. It's just a crash course in chemistry fundamentals. Just out of curiosity what course are you entering?

Dental Technology - will be going into the old mans business at the end of all this. Handy having a lab nearby to practise in. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Lyons is a nice chap even if I found his lectures tedious as hell.

There are certain types of students who don't have tutors, but I can't for the life of me remember which is which! Since you'll be heading along tomorrow, ask :)

Not going in til Monday 18th for mature student orientation week (do I qualify as 'mature' :) ) Anyway, I just emailed them, and will see what they say regarding my tutor.

I see that a calculator is recommended. Can anyone recommend a decent model and where to get it at a good price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

If it's a scientific calculator the Sharp one (whatever the latest model is) is the one that most people go for. They're easy to use and cheap enough.

I found out my tutor is a Doctor Yurii Gun'ko. Does anyone know anything about him at all? I assume he's in the area of Science, as this is the area I'm studying.

Either way, I'm doing that Chemistry course as well. The timetable seems pretty reasonable. I'll see some of you there, I hope.

He's in the department of chemistry. A friend of mine had him as a tutor and he was very helpful when he wanted to change course.

Justin Doherty is my tutor. Seems to be some sort of Russian/Polish professor, which is strange enough given the fact that I'm doing History & Political Science.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

its all arts, doing maths my tutor (an utterly useless one) was from geography

Yuri's a legend. Used to be a Soviet scientist "You dunt deescoverd somethink, they shoot you". He's head of the materials end of chemistry so takes good care of the advanced materials class. A good friend of mine just started a PhD with him and gets on great with him.

If you're willing to spend a bit extra, you might think about getting one which converts binary into decimal, hex etc. and vice versa. Not sure whether it's needed for Dental Tech though, so you might want to check your subjects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Ah just convert in your head.
