Have I Made A Mistake?

I have chosen to do TY. I'm in it. I know I've only done 2 days but I feel strange. I feel refreshed and ready to do work which is exactly the opposite of how I thought I'd feel. I thought I'd do nothing but I am bored. I feel as though I'm ready for work.

I also feel a bit envious of those of my friends who went into 5th year. i want to be with them. Not just my friends but everyone. I am going to go speak to the principal on Monday about the possibilities of changing.

I don't feel right in TY and feel as though i should be in 5th doing normal work.

Anyone else change from TY into 5th after the year had begun? Anyone else feel like this and wish they had the guts to go and change? Anyone feel like this and changed and wish they hadn't of changed back into 5th?

    Thanks,

    Timans.

Well I've just started Transition Year and I'm very happy. I'm not bored like you though I'll admit.. we've already been told about all these projects, field trips, work experience, president's award, trips abroad, etc etc which I'm looking forward to.
But if you're not happy in it by all means contact the princial and see if you can be moved to where you're more comfortable.

I felt like that increasingly more towards the end of TY. The work we were doing just wasn't fulfilling. A lot of my friends were in 6th year so I just wanted to be getting on with the LC.

It's probably not too difficult to change. A girl in my year (I'm in 5th year now), I think, was meant to be doing TY, but she changed at the last minute.

Perhaps talk to people you know who have completed TY in your school before, if you haven't already.

So, does that mean she actually never entered TY?

because, I have this awful image of all the teachers hating me for moving. LOL I have no idea why. :D

If you think you going to be bored the whole year you should change. A girl in my school changed into 5th year after a week in TY so i wouldnt say its difficult.

I applied to do TY and changed my mind at the last minute, and I've always regretted it. I know plenty of people who did it and found it the most enjoyable year of school. You'll do stuff in TY that you would never otherwise get the chance to do, and when it comes around to choosing careers you'll have a much more well-informed idea of what you want to do. And as well as that you'll know from talking to your friends in 5th year about what to expect, so you'll be at an advantage. The first days of any new thing will always be hard, but you should stick with it.

I think so, yeah. I reckon they had her down as doing TY on all the rolls and things but then she kinda turned up in fifth year. Presumably there was a bit of backstage shuffling also involved.

    Yeah,

I'm so confused right now. I think that maybe it's nostalgia creeping in. Like, maybe it's the fact I'll miss my class more than actually wanting 5th year.

    I don't know. I'm very confused.

Well my TY was quite good but if you do decide to skip it it's not like you'll be missing the best time in your life. Also, the quality of TY varies great;y from school to school... or so I hear.

if you're going to change you should get it over with fast as you will miss a lot of work (5th year) if you dont

i think you lucky you feel like that, put your energy into a project or hobby, if your really up for work and a challenge TY is the best year to be in that mind set

u sound like you shud change, pluses are you get out of school earlier, I felt the same as you about TY and it was compulsory so consider yourself lucky

i felt the exact same way as you last year. after a meeting we had in the school to find out what exactly we were doing for the year, i started panicing and worrying was i gonna waste another year in school and should i skip ahead?! im so glad i didnt though cos i wouldve missed out on a lot.
in third year your so used to the pressure of study, that when you finally reach transition year, you dont know what to do with yourself. but if your doing projects like the YSI (which is so worth all the hassle for the 2 days in the hotel, trust me!!:D) you could focus on those.
if you are gonna go on ahead to fifth, know this : ITS SO EFFIN HARD!! its 10 times more pressure than the jc from day 1. and do you know what you want to study for the lc yet? transition year really does help you out there.
good luck in whatever you decide:)

I was looking around qualifax and found a nice course in Miltimedia and Video games Development.

Anyway, I will just choose a Business, Arts, language and another subject to keep me covered anyway. Don't want medicine. Not mad fussed in Science so probably won't bother with a science subject.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

so you're going into 5th year now?

I'm doing Geography, History, Business, Religion and German at the minute, wasn't mad on Science either

I haven't started in Transition year yet, will get the induction tomorrow morning. Transition year is supposed to be a rest year, a break between work and give people a feel of the real world. The ammount of people I know who left after fourth year is amazing, as they can't seem to get back into the rythem of work. So if you think you will find it hard to get back working again go into 5th year LCA

    Yeah,

I wanted to do RE but you can't do it in my school.

I'll probably do the same. Economics, History, Geography/Biology/Physics, Spanish.

really confused about the third option. Need to know by tomorrow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

just to shed the light on things, my sister did Biology for the LC last year and its meant to be v.hard. Don't know much about Physics.

And oh yeah, make sure you want to do Economics first its meant to be v.boring (definitions, etc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Yeah, I'm defo doing Economics. I'm looking forward to it in fact.

I had a word with my principal and it's no problem. I'm going to go to 5th year tomorrow.

Higher Maths/English/Irish, History, Economics, Spanish and Geography.

Jakkas do you by any chance know an Ellen Quinn-Banville in your year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

    Physics is win.

Sure, I may not have done it in school yet, but it's just win anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

We do physics in TY but it's called "Data Logging", we do chemistry called "Chemical Analysis" and biology which is called....something that isn't biology...

I'd a positive experience of TY, so I'm not sure if I'm in the best place to help you out, but anyway here it goes...

It depends on what sort of opportunities your TY offers and whether or not you think you'll be able to gain anything from them. In the Work Experience I did, I managed to get three weeks - two with a media outlet here in Carlow and one with a fairly major one up in Dublin. I got a job out of it locally, and the knowledge I picked up will serve me quite well. That alone, for me, made the year worth it, despite all the other great trips and stuff we did.

But that was in my case. If you reckon that there are things you'll get to do this year that are definitely worth putting your LC on hold for, then do it. That's a lot easier said than done of course, but if they're things that you can only do through the school and will have great difficulty achieving otherwise, then it's probably worth going ahead. If Carlingford and perhaps another trip abroad are the main reasons for doing it, and you're really having doubts, then 5th year could be the best option. They'll be there next summer.

Whatever you choose to do, I hope you'll be satisfied that you made the right choice. Best of luck.

EDIT: Just read that your in 5th year. After all that! Still though, best of luck!

in our transition year,it's all very academically focused, not at all like we were told.
I'm really feeling that I've made a mistake.
if this is what I have to look forward to,I should have went straight into fifth year.

I suppose sometimes its nice to have a bit of anonymity though but thats probs just me :)

Well she IS on Boards herself, and I don't think she'd have a problem with someone knowing the NAME "Ellen Quinn-Banville"

I've always pronounced you Tim-ans...please don't take it away now!

Economics....its not enjoyable, it can be very boring...just make sure you don't lose your notes cos believe me, they're gonna be needed.
