Whats the difference between shortboards and longboards, apart from the lenght? Is there different techniques used or are they just used for different conditions?

Longer boards are easier to catch waves on, easier to stand up on and more stable. Shorter boards are more manoeuvrable and more fun for advanced surfers.AFAIK.
