Protein Advice

Not sure if this has been answered in other places, but I had a look at the stickies and couldn't see anything there.

Basically I've started getting into weights in the past 2/3 months as I became tired of having very little muscle and t-shirts hanging off me! I've only just made money as I was doing the LC and am planning on joining Crunch UCD in September. I've been using dumbells at home and have noticed a distinct improvement in my muscle mass. I'm now looking into protein powder as I find it very difficult to gain weight through eating and so am just looking for any advice I could get on which protein supplement would suit my needs.

    Cheers

I've read all the different stickies about weight gain and I've monitored my calorie intake and increased it hugely. My family are all thin and my metabolism is very fast so this could have something to do with it.

If you don't want to give advice on weight gain that's fine, but basically what I was looking for was some advice on protein supplements. ie: good prices, recommended intake, what products etc.

    Cheers

Well it's tricky with the diet because it changes so often, but I'll put up what I ate/will eat today:

Breakfast: scrambled eggs (3), 2 slices brown bread, yoghurt, large bowl of muesli with soya milk, grapefruit, water.

Lunch: Large bowl of pasta with tomato sauce, 4 sausages, 4 slices white bread, 1 banana, bowl of salad

    Snack: 2 toasted cheese sandwiches

Dinner: Roast chicken, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli, rice

Between dinner and bed: 1 banana, 100g nuts mixed with 80g raisins, 1 large glass soya milk

    Any help?

    Herein lies the problem!

Dave was rite Peadar, your calorie intake thoughout an average day is going to determin whether you will put on weight or not.
To put it simply you need to consume around 1.5 to 1.8 grams of protein per KG of your body weight AND around 3g of carbs per KG of your body weight PLUS a proper training programme to see any results.

Supplements are just that... supplements! Most of your macronutrients should be obtained from whole foods first and foremost.

To answer your question about Protein Supplements, my favourites are NutritionX Pro-X Proteins, ON 100% Whey, Relfex Instant Whey and USN are all decent products

But the problem is I wouldn't be able to stand keeping my diet the exact same from day to day - It'd be mind-numbingly sickening!

At the moment I'm seeing a lot of improvement in muscle mass and I just thought I could increase my protein intake without having to ram 10 chicken breasts down my throat!

Thanks for the protein advice anyhow.

If your seeing improved muscle mass then where is the problem? Your not going to get huge overnight, so if your getting big steadily then everything seems fine.

For protein, check out the sticky at the top, ON or Pro nutrition are the ones most will go for. I think EasyGainer goes to UCD so that is one route.

{EDIT} How much does your diet vary from the one you posted above? It's easy to eat a ton of food one day a week, but 7 days a week is different.

My diet changes in variety but very rarely in proportion so no worries there. Just thought that an extra bit of protein wouldn't do any harm.

Well if you want to build, its not goign to happen over a week though, your best keeping your diet fairly static including time and all. Ok not saying have pasta with chicken every single day for the next 4 years but dont change eveyrthing so regularly.

Also protein supplements are exactly that. Supplements! Too many people start going to a gym take a bit of protein and think right im on my way. They are a supplement not a replacement.

Incidentally lads. One for the shop owners here. Jon I know your in phibs but who owns the shop on Camden street? I pass by it every day and will be stopping in this week.

Thanks for the help. Also just wondering are there any weight gain products that I could use alongside my diet? I know metabolism speed doesn't prevent you gaining weight but it does make it quite difficult for me.

    Hey Peadar,

    Firstly, welcome to the iron game. Secondly, the guys are right to bang on about getting your diet sorted first and foremost. It really is a case of;

    Growing - good
Not Growing - eat more than last week

Beyond that, protein powders are only supplemental protein, whereas you really need protein AND calories. Alot of people will mix protein powders with glucose & BCAAs & other stuff to build their own meal replacements and shakes, but if you don't want to get into all that then I would go for a mass gaining product. I don't know much about them as I don't have that much difficulty putting on weight, though I think Mass X has more complex carbs than other mass gainers I've seen. Just add these in as extra meals basically.

...and don't punch your mother again. :D

Cheers t-ha, just wondering where would the best place (best prices) to go and buy said product be?(I live on the southside)

In this forum there are two guys who post and also have stores that give you sound advice and good stuff. Jon has a store in phibsbrough but as your south side Mick also has a store on Camden Streen beside Flannerys pub. Failing those natures way do good products and always seem to have a 50% off sale on. Ok it wont be as good as Nutrition X or that but its not bad stuff.

What ever you do don't follow the crowd and get drawn into a Tony Quinn store. Over priced and crap products.
