Beers for the poker forum!

We need to have a booze up for the poker forum. All the other forums do it and there's more of a sense of community here than most.

So we need dates that people are available, we need to have a location and we need to decide if we want to hire a function room and get food and all that crap.

    My suggestions are:
    Dublin city centre somewhere.
October, gives people time to get time off, gives me a chance to get back from holidays, and save money for the eventual cash games.

Depending on numbers and the night we have the beers, friday or saturday, booking a room somewhere might be the best bet.

Express your interest in this thread plz!
And suggest dates (in october or after) and possible locations.

And think up some spot prizes and prop bets.

Anywhere in Dublin suits me anytime!!!

I'll have to think of some props....

I could be persuaded to come (or not depending on the persuasion). I know quite a lot of ye ruffians anyhow but there are some others that I am keen to identify. We need more girls here though (in every sense).

im up for this too. messers not great for smoking (which a lot of poker players like to do)!

I'm around for this, seen as I never play live anymore it'll be good to catch up with people!

Any time in October and any place in Dublin should be fine.

Count me in, Oct sounds good gives plenty of notice and is right in between the second booze fest for crimbo:D (did i just say crimbo:eek: )

    Sounds good.

I'd be on for this but I'd prefer if we had drinking AND poker involved.

Say we get shortstack to arrange a boards only tournie in a hotel some Friday/Saturday night in October. €50 FO with 6k stack and 30 minute blind levels. Self deal or volunteer dealer (I'd be willing to deal for a table and play).

Like it says in the Anthony Holden book Big Deal when poker players get together and theres no poker going on what's the point?

Maybe I'm just too much of a degenerate gamblor to see the value of a night out without poker!!

    mad for it.

thinking saturday would be best. could hire the henry grattan if people want to be near the fitz for the eventual game. may be an idea to have the tourney first though so we can get properly wnakered.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

I'm game. Maybe some sort of booze related proposition bet for the night itself?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 329 ✭✭DocO

Id def be up for this aswell, but would love some sort of tournie like ollie says. The last time the poker.ie/boards met up, it was a brilliant night in the fitz, with the miller flowing completely. if we could arrange a venue to play a nice deep stacked tournie with self deal (every second one of us would be very capable to deal, and it could be rotated) and so there would be no reg cost (presuming we were allowed use whatever premises for free, perhaps fitz for one off??) so with a 50 +10 format, the ten euro extra could go to a few beers and snacks. then messy cash games? there are so many numbers constantly rising of boards members that it could be one hell of a night.
(another venue that im sure would accomadate would be the jackpot)

    what dya's think?

Edit: the pull for the club to let us host it would be they would get 3-4 cash tables out of us later in the night

    Sounds like a good idea.

I'm so not dealing if we have a self deal game though

Shots of tequila as 'getting it in when behind, and outdrawing' penalties/handicaps???

Q spades in the hand makes it jagermiester....

72o holds up - entire table does shots.....

    Could be messy....

    ....anyone seen me coat

I think this is a great idea.
If we decide to play poker though I think the fitz or any other cardroom is a bad idea. For a start we won't be able to drink. More importantly when people get knocked out they're likely to be tempted by cash games which would mean less socialising and getting to know people which I assume was what Luke had in mind when he proposed this first.

Hiring a bar would be brilliant. I'm free every night but saturday and occ. friday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭ionapaul

How many bars will allow random people to start playing poker? I know you can book the entire upstairs in the Odeon for free if you have the numbers for it (and casually mention that all will be heavy drinkers!), but can't see them letting poker be played.
I prob won't be around for this if it is scheduled more than 8 weeks away, off to US for a few weeks in late October and probably Oz in November.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 329 ✭✭DocO

Drinks is a must with the poker i think, gets banter flowing brilliantly. Last year the fitz allowed drinks on the balcony only. also if the SE was to be booked out, they allow drinks their for their private functions, also any private STT's in SE are allowed drink too. The jackpot opening night had drink flowing at the tables (im aware it was prob only for the opening nie) but dont that company serve alcohol? a word with duke and he'd prob ok it. jus few suggestions

Sometime in October would be good for me too - it would be excellent to put faces to names!

Id be up for this, would like to play a bit of poker, but i think the drinking/putting faces to the names would be paramount.

Well up for it... stick to the beer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Ste05

I'd be up for this too, nice to put faces to names. Don't mind either way if it's beer and Poker, or just drunken Poker after, but I think we should at least originally start with just beers, that way we can have the craic and get to know more people then just the people at our table....

However, when it inevitably leads to Poker, I completely agree with Madsl's idea about forfeits, the provider of a bad beat should be properly punished....

Also I really want a prop sheet like Doyle in HSP... :D:D

Das ist eine guten idea Luke...

I'll be celebrating my birthday around the same time.

I think Marq is right with regard to going to the Fitz or said club afterwards, would be much better to stay as close to a bar as possible.

Perhaps a certain tournament organiser could provide gear, table tops... (even between ourselves i'm sure we could get table tops etc..)

Yeah this was kind of my intention. A night off from poker (at least early in the night) to sit down, booze and talk **** for a few hours.
If we want to play poker while boozing then we can't do it in the Fitz, it's very unlikely that we can do it in the function room of a pub on a weekend, and if we get GJP or someone to organise a live tourney then it kind of becomes a poker night out instead of a booze up and 'abuse the mods' night out.

It look like a city centre location and some weekend in October is the general consensus. I like Karlh's idea of the Henry Grattan since its a decent pub and probably the right size.

I'll stick up another thread with a poll for when/where/poker options when we get more names interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,443 ✭✭✭califano

Id go for poker and drinks. Poker players are generally hermitical imo!! so if there was just drinks a lot of people wouldnt go and those who'd go would just stay in their own little clusters of people they know and not mix around.
Even if the poker is just a dos tourney that lasts 2hrs played in reverse with blinds levels getting shorter and shorter as the nite goes on so it finishes early enough so theresl a time where we'll be playing and drinking together then just drinking together?.

Edit to say i agree the poker shouldnt be played in any poker room. One of those function room type places or upstairs bars would be good.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,254 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dub13

I like the idea of a night on the beer and no poker.....sure we play enough poker.

im up for this, wasnt the fitz tournies held in henry gratton when the sdpt was on, so i am sure they wouldnt mind a few tables set up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,700 ✭✭✭tricky D

Saturday - good, Friday - bad.

Would prefer to play a bit, playing hands and giving bad beats as opposed to merely talking about them.

There are a few places which will give you their upstairs or downstairs as long as the drink flows: Toners being one place in particular. (One of the barmen there used to play in the Fitz and it's otherwise dead on Saturday night)

Will make further enquiries of my promoter friends for other venue suggestions.

My new football team is planning a fundraiser, quite a few boardsies involved, ditpoker lads. probably 10euro multirebuy, if theres interest Ill see can I sort it for the Saturday afternoon hopefully with fitz beer added followed by a beers in either Larry Murphys, henry grattans or Maguires - ideal for smokers if its raining

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

the reverse blinds sounds funny allright and would surely be the cause of a few bad beats??
i also like the idea of shots after a bad beat. otehr random things like gentlemans rules... you must put your ships in with you left hand or shots....
you must call the dealer sir/madam or shots....
if you show a bluff at the table, you can nominate another person to do a shot....
then the person who wins the biggest pot of the night with less than a pair via the other person folding wins a crate of beer...???

This sounds spot on: poker in the afternoon, beer til the small hours. I also suggest that we all hit Oscars touney at 4.30 on the Sunday for a real good game, where pride wins out!

Nothing wrong with playing poker in a pub room if no cash is on the table is there? I would keep it to a minimum though. Have the boards headsup final there and any other headsup challenges that folks care to make.
I'm up for this anyway pretty much any Friday/Saturday. Toners on Baggot st. have a cheap to acquire room upstairs if I recall which might suit.
