Days leading up to an event....work out or rest?

Hey chaps, long time reader first time poster.

I was approached by a colleague at work a little over a week ago about joining a 3-person triathlon team. They needed a swimmer. It's in a lake, 400m each way.
I said yes (a tad reluctantly because of the short notice) because I've been training throughout the summer anyway (although not as intenstly as I would have been had I known I'd be taking part in this) and in general I'm in pretty good shape.

I'm not expecting to win or anything, last year there were 180 teams competing. I'm not a bad swimmer by any means, but there'll probably be people there who will leave me for dead. It's all for charity though, so they'll be the real winners. I'd just like to do as well as I can and finish in a respectable position.

Anyway, my main question is this: what would be the right balance between working and resting in the days leading up to the event? I've been pushing myself that extra mile since I put myself down for it, but I also work full-time so it can be pretty tiring. I've gotten next week off work (the triathlon is next saturday) and I'm just wondering how I should use my time.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance!
