I've been using Windows media player for the simple reason that it's there but I have to say I find it sluggish and clumsy. Any thoughts or sugestions for a high quality replacement?

Ah theres loads out there. I have always used Winamp 2.81 (newest version is 5.21 I think).

I use WMP, just because it's simple and user-friendly. I don't see any point in downloading a player that is going to do the exact same thing, just so I can brag about how little of Microsofts software I use

If you use Windows, and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty customising from scratch, use foobar2000.

If you use Windows, and you just want the generic player, use winamp.

If you use Linux, use Amarok.

    Amarok>everything

Winamp 5 or if you're after something lighter that handles everything MPC.

I used to use windows but Ive migrated onto i tunes player.

Its just easy to use. I dont have a mp3 player. Just use it to play my music.

Winamp 5 all the way for me. I love the all the dsp plugins, the media library is nice, and does everything I like in a player.

    To much information there.
Anyway I use WMP 11. It does the job.

I use winamp, media player is too bulky, and annoying for just playing mp3's.

    I use foobar2000.

Its simple - low mem usage - I like it.

On the other end of the scale - when I was using linux - Amarok is an awesome media player.

I use Winamp 5. Hated how Amarok handled playlists. I just like to load all my mp3s into Winamp and hit shuffle.

i use wmp. i never did like winamp for some reason... sometimes i use itunes, but to be honest i find it very tedious and not at all user friendly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

It's all network-based here. I use slimserver along with softsqueeze.

Failing that, winamp with classic skin :)

iTunes - need it for iPod support. I have enough RAM to ensure it doesn't get sluggish when scrolling. Also the "display duplicate songs" options is worth its weight in gold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,591 ✭✭✭tommycahir

Itunes all the way ere - mainly started using it for ipod but then got used to it but as was said before at times it can be slightly sluggish depending on the machine build

winamp 2.8something here as well, the last version before aohell bought them and made it bloatware. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭accensi0n

In windows, winamp is teh win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

    Winamp + Classic skin.

Anything that takes more than 0.46 seconds to come up on screen annoys the piss out of me. I'm looking at you WMP/iTunes.

Foobar is great too, but far too much hassle to set up.

Winamp for sure! I run a small radio station as well so through the night i just make a huge playlist and turn on shoutcast!

Classic skin winamp here as well, love enqueueing songs. May move over to WMP11 when its out of beta, but will see. Not a fan of iTunes, bit too clunky (Wife has a pink iPod to go with it..:)). Just ordered a proper pair of Sennheisers to listen to them with as well :) (and not the PC series).

    Winamp 5.2x

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Winamp 5, but I use Foobar too because it has unicode support. If I could get Foobar to work properly with Audioscrobbler I'd use it all of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

normally winamp (i enjoy shoutcast) but for my own mp3's i have to use creative mediaplayer (que moany noises etc.) because there's no way to play off the mp3 player in winamp :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

I use xmms mainly. It's pretty much just a winamp clone for linux, and will even accept winamp skins and plugins.

    public bool Run(Foo bar);

    if(Run.Foo(bar) == true)
         printf("Good");
    else
       printf("Bold boy, very bold boy");

There. I just told you what to do in the nerdiest way possible.

I've been scrobbling my foo for a few years now... http://www.last.fm/user/Mutant_Fruit/ Ok, it needs a bit of pruning, it's been contaminated by my brother and sister again :p What problems are you having with audioscrobbler and foobar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 760 ✭✭✭Corkey123

I use Musicmatch...mmmhhh I think I'm out numbered here. Ok then I'll get me coat.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

I use WMP unless it doesnt work, in which case I'll use any of the above, I have a lot of codecs randomly darting around my desktop.

But one I really like is musicKube. It is great for searching through a huge music collection, and for generating quick playlists. It indexes your whole collection, which if u have a massive collection can take a bit, but it is specifically for really quick text searching...... really nice bit of freeware. At least I hope its freeware.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

I use Wmp11 or creative mediasource. Wmp11 is deadly cos you can view all your album art when scrolling thru your collection.

I use foobar cos its light on memory. Means I can play games and stuff while listening to music without any noticable impact on performance.

And I don't get all this setting up people are talking about. All I ever had to do was download a wma plugin.

I'm using an older version of Foobar [v0.8.3] which was working with AS, but when I upgraded to a newer foobar version the plugin stopped working (updated to the most recent plugin at the time). Went back to v0.8.3 because unicode wasn't working for me anymore. Since then AS never connects, and I think I'm still using the old plugin that doesn't cache the tracks.

Meh, once I get my new rig set up I'll sort it out on that, just couldn't really be arsed trying to get it working on this pc.

    Winamp v2

Was using v5 for a while but after a while it was taking yonks to open files so got rid and got v2.

MediaMonkey....does what I need it to do...and has cool icon ;)

Winamp v.5, although its not perfect. iTunes is my second choice.

WMP is a pile of crap though, its almost impossible to find what you're looking for (e.g. playlist view) and the keyboard shortcuts are just ridiculous.

i use media monkey great for tagging before i transfer to creactive zen.

I use Mediaplayer now but in the past I used Winamp2 and MusicMatch Jukebox

    Winamp 5 for me.

    MusikCube here aswell.

Easily the best player out there. Plays pretty much anything you want (Plugins), lightning quick search (Not the horrible, stuttery one you get in iTunes), small memory footprint, comes up qucikly, indexes reliably (And updates quickly once it indexes initially)

QCD player its a nice lght player with nice encoding features and plug-ins...

But it doesnt have a great media library just a big list :(

Anyone know where I can get Winamp 2.81?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

is there such a thing as a plug-in for winamp that allows direct play from playforsure devices (i.e. vision:m)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

Amarok on Linux, Winamp on Windows. Amarok is the best mp3 player i've ever used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Lord Oz

Foobar2000 when I'm in windows, Quodlibet when I'm in linux. Quodlibet is a great media player/organiser for linux which does everything, and foobar2000 is very fast to load and uses very little memory.

    Usually Realplayer at work.

At home, usually play MP3s on my Roku, using iTunes on the PC as the server.

You can customise foobar to pretty much look you want. For example, here's a look I had back when I used windows.
