Grown men watching kids shows

Alot of the threads on the retro forum do ask where can you buy kids shows from the 80s and early 90s on DVD. No offence intended to anyone, but......theyre kids shows. Fair enough, if I am up early in the morning and the Teenage Mutant Turtles are on, Ill watch a few minutes of it and think "christ, i remember this episode from 15 years ago". But at the same time, I wouldnt plan a night in where i grab a few cans and watch episodes of the turtles back to back. Same with The A Team. Grand back in the day, but the rather weak plots and lack of actual violence from an adult perspective just cant hold me anymore and I wouldnt watch it for hours on end. Anyone else mystified by this Michael Jackson- Peter Pan like thing for watching old kids tv?

Nope, I regularly watch kids shows from my childhood, plus I'll watch The Goonies once a month.

What mystifies me is why it bothers you what others do with there time and money?

Well a psychologist could go off on one about how innocent childhood was with a care free life until you reach the age of 13 and 14.

I love watching reruns of the A-Team. Came home from a house party not so long ago and the A-Team was on. It was 7am on a Sunday morning. Watched it then passed out. Great way to top off a night!

Most old childrens TV is shìt.

Don't get me wrong... I still have a fond place in my heart for Mask, He-man, Turtles, My Little Pony... ermmm.. I mean.... emm... anyway...

But I'd rather them stay in my distant past then watch any of them again

(with the exception of transformers... roll on April 2007)

Grown men are still big kids , simple as that. We don't grow up, we just get bigger and earn more money.

We all still like cartoons and get excited when we see something shiney and fast.

    Teenage Mutant Turtles rule!!!

I hardly ever watch kids shows now about 2 years ago I did. Its only when im bored up early(which isnt often) that I watch them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Well lets put it this way... i was in the gym recently and flicked on to the den.. they were showing Turtles... sweet thought i... i love that show (did you know it was an Irish cartoon??).. Anyway few seconds in and i notice something is wrong... wrong look, wrong voices.... just plain wrong... It hits me.. they re-made this classic cartoon into utter crap...

So point is... sometimes the old stuff is the best.. and yes we are kids at heart!!! Why do you think there are so many ADULT cartoons like southpark etc out there??? Some are just freaky like the "adult swim" cartoon shows like "aqua teen hunger force" and "Sealab 2020" I think they are on Bravo some late nights... Any Americans reading this might know them more than Irish people.

I would never be able to watch any of the shows I watched when I was younger. Transformers, Conan, etc all great back in the day, but only back in the day. Whenever I see them on now I'm just not interested in the slightest...dare I say, they're just too childish? :p

However I do love watching Spongebob Squarepants....I'm a really big movie fan and the Spongebob movie was one of my personal biggest anticpations ever :D

yeah adult swim is great, it's part of Cartoon network, but i think other stations buy them, so thats why it's on bravo.

aside from Aqua teen hunger force, well worth checking out is Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.
They take alot of footage from the old Space ghost cartoon and then splice it with interviews with famous people.

the one with moby is classic

You never got excited when you saw a Tom and Jerry cartoon starting?
    Laughed at Road Runner?
Waited all week for Saturday to see Masters of the Universe + Thundercats?

what the hell is wrong with you!?!

Look at the topic's name. "kids shows". But just for you, I'll name some older ones:

    Tom and jerry
    Batman
    Loony Toons
    Roadrunner
    Earth Worm Jim
Sonic (the old ones of course;) )
    Turtles of course

Another good modern one is Fairly Odd Parents! :D

I always enjoy a drunken viewing of HR Puffinstuff - mind you, I'd probably be giving away my age there....

gopher - you've no joy in your life, do you - it shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

A lot of the old shows are a bit rubbish when you go back and look at them.

Stuff like Bravestarr and M*A*S*K are just awful.

Ulysses 31 and The Mysterious Cities of Gold are still great though, mainly because they didn't waste time talking down to and patronising children and just got on with telling good stories.

Modern cartoons were really good there for a while... but more and more new series seem to becoming increasingly mindless. Recent shows like Justice League were brilliant though, really good arc storylines and great characterisation.

Power Puff Girls is always good fun too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    *something new*

    justice league unlimited rocks.

    *something old*

    Satam sonic was the coolest.

yeah I still watch cartoons, mostly cause I dont really watch TV much anymore, and if I am flicking through one its easier to throw on a random cartoon, then to try and get into a TV series like LOST or 24 when they are in their second season or something and require you to go out and see the rest of the season to know whats going on. I'd watch more normal tv i've i watched tv more often but i dont...so meh.

I've no shame in watching cartoons the quality on alot of them are sh*te but there you see some which match and even better then anything on television. Fosters home for imaginary friends is brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

And lets not forget about anime. I speant 3 hours watching Naruto episodes last night.

But if a story has got strong characters and a good storyline then anyone can enjoy it, too many cartoon makers think that just because it's for kids they can churn any old rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

I speant 3 hours watching Naruto episodes last night.

    filler or story arc?

I'm torn about naruto, i liked the first 10 or so episodes, then it got sh*t, then it got good again, then sh*t again, then for a moment absolutely brilliant.

    And now its absolute crap.

Bleach at least is consistent entertainment, its not often jaw dropping brilliant (there are points) but it rarely drops into awefulness, even when its a filler, as naruto has.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Ha... well I foolishly started watching Naruto at episode 101 as I thought that was the first episode.

I watched up to about episode 160 and got tired of the filler... and now I've gone back to the begining.. I'm up to about episode 60 or so now... the Third and Orichamaru are having their battle... pretty cool.

I stopped watching Bleach when it got into all that gay vampire sh*t though.. is it back to normal yet?

no the filler is still running, though they've just gone into the spirit world to fight, so i'm expecting a few of the team leaders (KEPACHI!) to have a fight or two...

its meant to be ending somewhere around 100 and its on 93 now.

on a side note, filler suck because you know no matter what happens it has to end up in the same position it was in before the filler, so nothing actually lasts in its storyline.

I used to watch Batman every morning before school when I was younger.
Makes me cringe when I see it nowadays though.

    What is Kids tv?

Something that only a child could sit through or something that can appeal to a wider audience?

    Mike.

HR Puff n stuff - Classic, of course the drug references went straight over my head as a kid.
    Blake's 7
    Pinky and the Brain
Tom And Jerry, Road Runner, Foghorn Leghorn,

Adult swim does indeed kick a lot of the ass. My signature is a quote from Sealab.
Staying on topic, Earthworm Jim still gives me a kick. As does old epsiodes of the Simpsons of course.

If someone would be judged for watching the entire series of 'Pirates of Dark Water' over a week... then judge me.

It was excellent by the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭18AD

Transformers is great. As is Samurai Jack. Heman. Skeleton Warriors. Adult [swim].

I don't watch TV anymore but if I did, I'd be watching be watching these shows.
I find the attraction is that there is no solid story line that actually makes sense. And the really lame lessons to be learned from each episode are laughable. Some of the made-up words are great and trying to figure out what the hell they mean.

I remember watching Transformers a while back and realizing how much it would influence your tiny little mind when you were young.

Sealab is one of the funniest things i have ever cough coke up my nose for.

Sparks: How can you worship that guy? He killed a man!
Captain Murphy: Hey, only for revenge. "Vengeance is mine," quoth Alvis. Then he shot that guy right in the freaking face!

If someone has 'pirates of dark water' i would dearly like to obtain a copy!!!

Oh yes, starting in September. Check out the Venture Brothers too... equally awesome with added David Bowie reference episode and obscurity.

Pirates of Darkwater had a Monkey bird in it voiced by Roddy Mcdowell... how could it be anything but excellent?

Although Roddy Mcdowell only seemed to be in a special version I saw on Sky Movies... the series as shown on the BBC didn't seem to have his voice in it.

Some of the stories just never get old. Just a few months ago I bought "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" off ebay. There's not enough sagas anymore, theres also another one i'm trying to track down which I can't remember the name of, it was kinda a french anime with this guy and his white dog traveling around the world... bah, i'll post in the retro forum.

Modern cartoons I think are good are the Clone Wars and Samurai Jack, I also like most manga, the DBZ sagas being my favourite.

Someone mentioned Scooby Doo earlier, I have to agree. I was 15 minutes late for an appointment today because I couldnt leave the house. It was the vampire episode, identical twins, etc... A classic. Although I agree that the Scrappy episodes are of a completely awful standard.

I also like X Men and love Dexter's Labratory. I'm not into Spongebob at all I'm afraid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

    Sponge Bob has it's moments...

but the fact that there is fire underwater... and eh... water underwater deeply annoys me.
