Looks like i'll be taking that day of work!

Any one have any other experience with Tevion? Are they any use?

I can see its just a re badged LG & Samsung set up but what is there build quality like etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

    might be worth a go.

have done very well out of the tevion 28" widescreen crt tv i bought in aldi for 180€ a year or so ago. wish i'd picked up the 5.1 set up with it at the time now. :(

can't fault what i have anyway, and if this is the same quality i'd say it'll be grand. just wish i had the time and money to get it.

    Our 28" Tevion is fncked.
It was never very good, picture was distorted, would band with high-white and contrast changes from any signal source.

I would seriously question the validity of the "HD" claim.

1366 × 768 pixel resolution - what's the scaling going to be like at the plethora of settings?

What do you mean by this? It has the the correct amount of pixels and 2 HDMI ports to have the right spec for HD

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 23,279 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

Well HD typically comes in one of two formats:

    720p = 1280×720
    1080i = 1920 × 1080

As this TV is 1366 × 768, it is going to have to either scale up or scale down the HD content to match the resolution of the monitor.

Of course that isn't unusual for most HD TV's, but you need to make sure it has a good scaler.

Have ye guys been keeing an eye on the net? They are producing so many of these screens it wont be long before the price drops through the floor. HD? For Gods sake there is nobody broadcasting in HD, apart from that hyped up premiership, yet. Most of the Sky stuff doesn't even know what widescreen is.

If it's 1500, it's well priced, considering there's a free wall bracket (usually quite expensive) and 3 year warranty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭carrotcake

expect at least another €100 on the irish price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭DrNuyenVanFaulk

No, Carrot Cake, Aldi and Lidl are good like that. Sure the websites are the Irish websites. All prices displayed are as is in the shop.
I'd also say 1500, considering the specs. I just hope it has good contrast & colour issues. But for the price...

Has anybody seen this in shops in town? it gets good reviews on pixmania but some mediocre reviews on www.avforums.com but the folks on avforums are often comparing to units that cost 3 times as much!

Is there a difference in VAT between Ireland and Germany?

Yeah I think we pay a higher rate but not that it would add €100

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭carrotcake

yeah, they pay 16%. in the uk it's 17.5%, yet the computer was £749 there (€1100)

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 23,243 Mod ✭✭✭✭godtabh

its 21% here. They also have to ship it further.

Yeah but next year you will have your grand in hand but be saying, "look at the sony 80" megapicture 6000, its 1500 now, but next year it will plummet in price!"

What does one need to look out for in relation to being able to use an LCD TV as a computer monitor? Would this Aldi TV have this capability?

    Are you short sighted :D

It has DVI in and HDMI in both can be got from a normal graphics card with some adapters but DVI should be standard on your pc.

So it will work out of the box at 40 inches :)

soon to be blind from watching all that high def filth on a 40"!
It does kill 2 birds with the one stone, class TV class monitor, takes up feck all space. I got my plasma for that reason but the resolution was far too low, now I want the LCD as a monitor/tv for the bedroom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 581 ✭✭✭bazman

Cheers for the info guys - I don't know my DVI from my HDMI. Not short sighted, but like to be able to connect my PC to my main TV occassionally for selecting music/video etc etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

    DVI

    VGA

Where your monitor is plugged into the PC if you have DVI "socket" all you need is a cable to use the tv as your monitor. If you have the VGA then you need a VGA DVI adapter to use.

Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of HD?

At that size, even at 1080p but especially at 720p, you will notice the pixels unless you are quite far back from the screen.

I would say these will find homes in pubs and clubs where a person could be 15 metres or more away from the screen. Home users would probably stick to a more decent 40" size

Thats an odd statement. Larger screen generally means you can take in and see more. Higher res, more detail. Combined, much better again.

I have been running a HD Projector (92" Screen) for 2years for all my TV, Console and Movie stuff, at 720P. It looks great, very sharp and easy to read, considerably nicer image than my parents 42" ALIS Plasma (running 1280x768).

Im about 4.5m from the screen btw.

I would make the opposite statement, HD on a 32" screen is a waste unless you are sitting ontop (less than 1m) of the screen. It only makes sense on 42"+ displays and even on 42" vast majority of people could not (repeatedly) tell the difference between 960x576, 1280x720 and 1920x1080 from over 5m away, their eyesight isnt good enough. There is a calculator online that helps work this out IIRC..

Used to read all that above as true until I got my 32 inch panny and SkyHD , the above statement is just not true , the difference is staggering , way way way better than SD resolution.

I posted on this issue before , and someone pointed out to me that those calculations in the online calculator assume perfect SD resolutions and no one broadcasts perfect SD , so the 1080 output from the SkyHD box wipes the floor with the SD channels and is drop dead gorgeous on a 32 inch LCD.

    I know ,Ive got it.

TBH guys, just get a PTAE900 for €1300, thats if you want a real TV experience.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭mathias

Was considering one of those a while back but there is no true widescreen support in its resolution options so no good for movies , not if you are particular about true formats anyway :)

Thats what put me off it.

We've also got the wonderful WEEE charge. I don't think most EU countries have implemented that yet. Also, they'll charge more here because they can - they'll still be undercutting the sh1t out of Irish electrical retailers.

edit: oops, this was in reply to the last post on the first page of this thread, didn't realise it went on to another page.

I can just see it now.

    NEWSFLASH
There was a number of robberies OUTSIDE a number of Lidl supermarkets this morning. The thieves indentified their victims as follows
Robber: Are you waiting to buy one of these 40" LCD TV's for €1399?
    Victim: YES
Robber: Do you have a Laser card?
    Victim: NO
    Robber: GIMME YOUR MONEY THEN!

    :D:D;)

    Question for the Experts.....
How does this compare to other HD LCDs on the markets which are obviously a lot more money?
I know next to nothing about HD TV (to my shame :) ) but I do like a bargain.

However, if its full of crap components and is unreliable ... it could be a case of "the shortest way round is the longest way home".

€1400 is still a lot of cash and I have purchased crappy Tevion bits 'n' bobs in the past.
Bottom line.... Will it fall apart in a year? (okay 2..)

ANy people bought Tevion branded LCDs / TV's / Plasmas from Aldi in the past and what do you think of this deal?

Sorry for all the Q's but I'm curious to know what the general consensus is on this one..
