I'm looking for advice on what & when to eat after a workout. I usually go to the gym straight from work so have a yogurt & banana before I get there. Gym involves some weights and at least 50 minutes cardio, 4 times a week. By the time I get home it is usually about 90 minutes before I eat (chicken/eggs, brown rice, veg) after the gym. With weight loss the main goal is 90 minutes too long before eating and if so what type of thing should I eat. Don't want to undo the hard work by not eating enough or eating the wrong things.

Have a shake with some whey and dextrose straight after the workout and then have your meal above 90 mins later. Dextrose is the quickest digesting simple carb and will help restore muscle glycogen.

    thanks jester.

Any suggestions for what to make the whey shake with...water/milk? dumb question? I know there are probably lots of other threads about shakes. Going to the gym straight from work means I can't really keep anything cold and the prospect of a warm shake mings a bit. Is that just something you have to put up with.

Dextrose is pretty much glucose (in the US they always call it dextrose). Glucose can be got in supermarkets in the baby food section, or alongside icing sugar. Maltodextrin can be got in homebrew shops, which are usually health shops these days.

I was reading a webpage about studies done with people taking protein immediately after and 60-90 mins after a workout. The people taking it immediately put on more muscle, can't find the page now but it was a good bit more. Even if you were only taking very small amounts it worked wonders, not sure the amount but it was about 50kcal worth, they were saying it stimulated muscle growth, but had to be whey proteins, they mentioned small amounts for people on diets, but I reckon more would be better.

And just for the record, this kind of suppliment is 100% safe, i go to the gym 4 times week and was just worried it would have bad effects ( i am in the wanting to put on muscle and gain weight catagory by the way).
