Calorie burn for cardio vs. strength training

    Sorry if this has been posted before. Have recently been combining cardio and strength, (i.e. weight training), workouts, and so have started to pay more attention to the difference in the calories I burn jogging/rowing/whatever as against the calores I burn when lifting weights.

    Obviously it's harder to determine this for weight training since there's the whole microtear and subsequent muscle re-building which is going to burn through more calories, but is there some kind of general way of comparing the two?

    It's completely academic. Each form of training burns differnent ratios of calories due to different heart rates encountered during taining. Furthermore the amount of calories burnt during standard training cardio or weight based is minimal and will not impact your diet or weight loss.

    What will however is the metabolic increase derived from cardio and the increased calories burnt off as a result of increased muscle tissue from weight training.

    And as nice as it is to know it won't change your physique or effect your progress. Don't worry about the why, just get on and train. ;) Most people stand around asking to many questions get confused by theory and then never get around to some real good training. Don't let this happen to you.:D

    Do your carido at 60-70% of your max HR first thing in the morning before breakfast for 45-60 minutes.

    Do your weight training, if possible in the afternoon, every second day or so (no cardio on those mornings) and lift heavy weights with impeccable form within a 4-6 rep range.

    Spend most of your mental energy working out and planning your diet so you eat the proper ratios in the proper amounts and at the proper times for your goals, every 2.5-3 hours.

    Once you have that down and look fantastic and are happy with your appearance and fitness levels you may then ask questions like why and what differnece :D

    If on the other hand you knew all that already and are experienced and happy then see my first paragraph above. If you wna to determine the claories get a HR monitor and measure your HR during each, then you can determine your calories and the metabolic effect once you factor in your personal details.

    Yeah I more or less knew this already, was just curious to see if the different effects between cardio vs. strength training had any significant calories, thought I'd tap your superior experiences.

    Most online calculators I see show about the same for moderate weight training and fast cycling, (the 2 things I do). But then there is the muscle building effect every other day from weights, this has led to my fat loss. I say fat and not weight, I have been 12stone for the last few months, but have had to make new notches in my belt in that time, and am now heading for a 3rd :)
