LCD TV Monitor

Is there any disadvantage (except extreme res) of using a HDTV as a PC monitor?

I mean, you can get a bloody big TV for the cost of a smaller PC monitor. Especially with newer cards supporting HDMI, eg the new MSI 7600GT.

So why don't more people use HDTV's?

Cos the resolution usually sucks for their big size, esp. when sitting close to the screen.

Most LCD HDTV's you buy will have a max resolution of 1366x768 which really isn't a lot [720p=1280x720] & is fine for normal computer usage.

For ease of use I would recommend the HDTV you buy also has at least a DVI/VGA in as these are often programmed with the EDID which contains computer resolutions so you don't have to mess around with any settings. Just in case things with the HDMI port don't work out (I'm not saying that it wont).

1080p screens on the other hand are rather large and would have a resolution of 1920x1080 this is where things start to get tiny in XP and text is hard to read unless you raise the DPI/fonts but doing this screws with the UI & icons a bit as well. Having a laptop with a 1080p screen personally I would not use such a display with XP it is too hard on the eyes, Windows Vista is supposed to scale much better on high resolution displays but that is still some ways off.
