Irish Independent health supplement

The Independent is a rag and I don't buy it but my parents still buy it so I do read it sometimes. On Mondays there is a health supplement in it which has articles on health, nutrition and training. The training advice is done by some guy called Karl Henry who is a personal trainer apparently. Has anyone read any of his articles. This week he's advising people not to do too many spinning classes as it makes the ass and legs too big. Previously he was advising women not to lift heavy weights for low reps as they'll build too much muscle and would be better to do higher reps for "toning"

But this is not the only crap health supplement out there. The training advice in the Sunday Times "Style" magazine is even worse and actually laughable. I suppose it's to be expecetd as these supplements are targetted at women many of whom will swallow any rubbish they read in some silly magazine.

    Sounds like father like son!!

Karl talks a big game and i wish him the best in the fitness industry however if thats what he recommends then i would look else where.

You want better info then direct more people to this site. Mean while trainers like myself will continue to work our butts off and act as role models for our clients.

If a client left a session with me without sweating or was not stiff the next day I yes I would be disappointed.

Magazines are generally very very very slow on keeping up with the latest info so stick to the net

I just found Karl Henry's website
    http://karlhenry.ie

Looking at this is clear that he's aiming for the female/toning/pink dumbbells end of the market. Have to say I find a lot of the stuff on his website laughable and wishy washy. It's not all his fault though as IME the majority of women love hearing this sort of thing from skinny pretty boys. He'd probably lose business if he did things differently.

Sadly the PT market can be very dodgy, and not everyone can have the passion and scruples that our own Transform has.

But in fairness i have noticed a positive trend in the industry lately so maybe there is hope?

Dom, were your ever offered something like that column, and if so would you jump at the chance?

Brian, I rarely get offended by the sexist comments on this board but I could bury my pink, fluffy stilleto in your ill-informed ass right now!

Erm, what comment has got you so riled up. A woman speaking here and I would have to agree with Brian that most women do not seem to want to hear the truth when it comes to what is effective training. All my friends baulk at the idea of lifting proper weights despite my constant reassurances that no they will not become some beefed up bodybuilder called Olga. I'm not sure of all the factors that contribute to this apprehension but if im being honest i would suspect laziness to be one of them. You would have to admit its easier (although IMO less fufilling) to do all your resistance excercises with some 2kg pastel couloured dumbbells rather than really pushing yourself to the max.

Nice one Julesie, I thought I would get some agreement from females in this forum! I don't think hunnymonster was being fully serious with her comments about sexism though

Just out of interest I decided to pull out two older threads which are quite related to this topic. The first thread contains a very funny yet true post by "minesajackdaniels"
