Core Muscles

Without actually joining a Pilates class, what exercises are the most effective for building your core muscles?

Also, anyone know where I could find a weight lifting guide. I recently got weights to begin training, but got no guide with it. I've looked through the forum briefly but couldn't find any mention of this, so I apologise if this is covered elsewhere.

    Thank you

Most compound exercises will give your core muscles a good workout eg of exercises
    Deadlifts
    Squats
    Chin ups
    Standing military presses
    Rows

If you're just starting off your core will be weak so go easy on the weight, build up slowly and concentrate on good form. The last thing you want is to find your core muscles are unable to support you when you're in the middle of a heavy military press.

when you get to a more advanced level you can add some more brutal exercises to your regime eg the overhead squats as mentioned
