drinking on runs

    i have recenly started training for a marathon and have just started running what i would class as long distances i.e. 7 miles which takes me about 77 minutes. ive heard it said that when running more than 1 hour you should drink during the run. what is the best way to go about this?. ive tried carrying a bottle but i find it very distracting and annoying. how do other runners take fluid during runs?

    I have a 1.5 ltr camlepak that i take on runs (well when i used to do long runs, must get back to that soon) sometimes it can start to fall off the shoulders but it is easier then carrying a bottle

    I only carry liquids for runs lasting more than two hours and I usually just carry a 500ml bottle in my hand. You'll get used to it after a couple of trips. If you really don't like that then you can buy belts that hold a bottle of water. Nathan ones usually come top of the ratings on these.

    I don't carry water on anything under 80 mins myself. I have platypus holder which is similar to the 1.5L one mentioned above. It's handy for holding my ipod too. I also have a waistpack that I use if I run to training and run back again. Holds the bare essentials I need and a couple of water bottles.
    When is the marathon? How many times a week are you training for it?

    be careful running with an ipod. They are not designed for running and you risk damage to it using it for running. Better to use a solid state (cheap mp3) for anything moving.

    its the dublin marathon. i know im leaving it tight but im not hoping for much. if i can finish ill be a very happy man. i train four days a week.

    heya, I don't run myself, but i know the if my dad is going for a long run, he tends to hide water bottles in hedges etc along the route so he can pick them up later on.

    I've seen quite a few people with the fuel belts so they obviously work for some. They're good if you want to take a mixture of liquids and gels. I would be more inclinded to go with something like http://www.sportsunlimitedinc.com/nathanelite1.html. Only one bottle but designed for less bouncing around as you run and the angled bottle is easy to reach for.

    That does seem quite tight. I was hoping to do it myself but just haven't had the time to train. Are you planning on walking some of it? Covering only 7 miles on your runs isn't a huge amount of milage. My first marathon I was doing 50 miles a week and my longest run was 16 miles on average, and 20 miles two weeks before the race. Best of luck to you.

    Well it wouldnt have been in my plans but who knows. As i said I just want to finish so I have no time goal and I wouldnt look at it as a major defeat if I did have to walk but ideally id like to jog the whole way.

    Were you looking to run it within a certain time? Ive had a look at a good few training plans for a first marathon and none recommended that much running, 50 miles a week is a fair distance. I would say im about a week behind scheduale in my training but i should make that up by the end of october. I should have a 10 mile run in the bag by the end of this month and then Ill gradually build up through september and the first two weeks of october. does all this sound reasonable or am i really codding myself? I will point out that I am young and relatively fit and stick to my training plan very strictly. How did you get on anyway in your first marathon FX?
