It certainly won't be 12 tonight, because it would not yet be the 1st in America. Just do what I am doing and know that by Wednesday morning you will be able to download the demo when you wake up, that way, if it comes any earlier it will be a pleasent surprise.

I'm in work and I feel a bit of sickness sweeping over me now. I think I might need to go home for a lie down ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

Very annoying being stuck in work!

I'm really looking forward to this one, when I first heard about it I shrugged it off as another poor GTA clone, but the more I've read about it in recent previews the more I've wanted to play it. GTA might, just maybe, have some worthy competition at last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,860 ✭✭✭Julez

Got the demo, very like gta!! But seems pretty decent after about 20 mins of play!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Just stepped my sister through downloading the demo so it should be primed for use upon my return, unless of course I get disconnected :(.

Great to see more free-roam games with this and Crackdown. I know it's taken a lot of crap for copying GTA (from myself included) but hey, if it ain't broken....

Although I wish the would move out of the Fkin hood. (Listening to kid-homies on forums talk about this game is making me seriously consider a genocide trip to the states.)

NNNNNOOOOOO the day the demo is out is the day my internet decides to be slow :( but it is downloading just very slowly, I've been downloading since 11am and it's now 14.25 and only 50% done. I gonna bring my HDD up to my mates to see if it will go faster there CYA

I have it, it's gta with better physics and a worse frame rate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭Kinetic^

    Hopefully it's not final code!!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

    and a worse frame rate.

    Fixed in retail apparently.

Oh, and I also forgot "Just Cause" (I think that's the name of it) as another free-form, although it's seems a little weird, and is possibly more outdoor adventure than true free-form.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed the demo, but it's just more of the same gta style gameplay... Nothing new to offer. Not worth €60+ in any case. If you could get it on play asia, etc... for less than €40 it maybe worth the cash.

Just over €30 on playasia , but still need to wait and see if its compatible before ordering yet.

I can tell you one thing about the demo, it's deffo a hell of alot more violent than gta... although there's no blood, the fact the animations are more realistic than gta makes everything seem far more violent. People get thrown many metres into the air when you run them over, crash lifeless into lamposts, walls, other vehicles. it's madness.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭KTRIC

I tried to download it earlier and I just keep getting this odd error message saying that its not available.

Perhaps you all wore it out from downloading it !!!

    Baxtards...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

Well when I play it, I get signed outta live, and cant sign back in, until I quit the demo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

we always hope that demos that are crap are not final code but you know its gonna be the same. its strange how people actually think these 360 games are goin to be good. like over-g and chromehounds. it was obvious from the start they were going to be terrible and this game too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

Hmmm. There's something about the environment. I don't know if it's too sparsely populated or lacking in graphical detail or what it is, it just doesn't feel like a city. It feels more like a bunch of connected roads. If that makes any sense!

That put me off it at first but it did start to draw me in after that and I've been playing it all evening. It really is a carbon copy of GTA in so many ways, but that's no bad thing. Everything was instantly familiar, smoke to signal your car is badly damaged then flames under the bonnet to alert you you better dive out before it explodes. Pedestrians blurting out one liners and reacting to what you do. Even the map and mission markers look like GTA. But GTA is a good game and it's yet to be successfully copied so I don't mind that. People say these games have been done to death, I disagree, the genre is far less packed than FPS/RTS/Sports games etc. There's plenty of room for more sandbox games like this one.

Fighting on foot is far better than GTA, which isn't hard, while on the other side the car handling isn't quite as good in my opinion, the cars are far less slidey. But there is at least a nice variety in the way different vehicles handle and the damage and crashes are great.

I'm not sure of my verdict. It's certainly fun. And the addition of proper physics and proper gunfighting to the GTA Formula is definitely a nice one. Other nice touches are the way different pedestrians react, some will run away, even vaulting over walls if they have to, some will curl up and panic, some will drop their shopping on the ground and start to run, some will trip over, some will fight back, some will even come to the aid of their fellow pedestrians. Little things like that give it the next gen sheen, but there's still something I can't put my finger on that tells me it's not quite GTA.

I'll probably wait for reviews, see how multiplayer handles, before deciding whether to purchase or not.

Anyone get in a head on crash with another car yet?! I did it and the two passenger came flying out the front window of the car!! Nice touch!

i was just about to say that, its a really nice touch

anyone know if there will be motorbikes in the full game? - would be interesting to see how dangerous bikes are with ragdoll physics :D

Its a nice game its good that they ripped off gta so much lets you jump right in. Just hope the draw disntace and frame jumping is not in the final code but it probably will be.

No motorbikes or bikes or boats or planes unfortunately, just your basic vehicles.

The ragdoll physics are fun though, try getting your character to jump out of the car at high speed into the path of oncoming traffic, great fun!

The more I play the demo the more it grows on me I have to say.

Definitly enjoyed the demo, and will pick up the game. However, there is something about it that just did not feel right. Perhaps I need to adjust the sensitivity of the aiming, maybe I am just too used to how the cars handle in GTA, but something about the demo felt...off. So far, I am not too impressed by the characters and narration in the story, but hopefully there is good character development and involvement in the end game. I may need to just play it a bit more.

The mini-games for respect seem like a good idea, actually rewarding you for doing the little side parts of the game (and there are some good ones too, the insurance fruad one sounds funny, (minor)
hit a button and your toon goes into ragdoll mode. Try to injure yourself as much as possible to make a claim!
    ).

The final thing I wasn't able to judge from the demo was the real dangers posed by the cops and gangs. I litterally fought the cops and the saint's around freckled b1tches for about 20-30minutes and I never even bothered looking at my life bar, infact, I forgot I had one. I only died because I tried luring the cops over to the petrol station but hit some gas canister and sent myself flying! Hopefully when your able to get more stars the s**t will start to hit the fan a bit more.

Also, although it's hard to do it any other way, cop cars are still always just coming up behind you whenever you deal with the previous one (although they come from further away rather han just *ding* in behind you like GTA).

Well, that's about all the negatives I have got, framerate is a bit messed up when I blow up a few cars alright, but the Devs have been quoted as saying it's fixed (fingers crossed).

Apart from these things, it's seems like a good-great addition to a sparsly populated genre, it does most things GTA-style but with a little more polish, can't complain with that. The ragdolls just make it so much more hilarious and enjoyable (Go to the off-license and buy a 40, then go punching some pedestrians.... oh, and then hold-up the offo afterwards!). I know I will enjoy the full game when it comes out, just how much is still unclear.

I enjoyed the demo, but had some issues with graphics. Did anyone else notice how transparent material like johnnys(i think.... the guy with the black/white hair) glasses and the windscreens on most cars are made of a strange non-transparent structure.... And there is zero background detail in cut-scenes.

It's got alot of potential, especially with multiplayer. I could see myself getting it for the right price but Dead Rising, although I haven't played it, will get preference and they're out within a week of each other.

Not really full access, go certain places and you will be sent back. I don't think you can walk on any of the second island (may be wrong on that).

Just playing there and after a day away I feel even better about the game, only thing I left out this morning was the fact that pedestrians are STILL jumping out infront of my car screaming "Noooooo". Definitly felt better about car handling, and had great fun when I figured out you could toss pipe bombs drive-by style!

{EDIT} BTW Stev, expect that sig to be taken away soon. It's too big.

I dont think much of the demo, but I still enjoyed it more than san andreas.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

It's a 360 game basically imitating what San Andreas did two years ago IMO. I've no doubt it'll sell by the bucketload because it's controversial but it'll still just be a poor man's GTA and still just be something to tide people over until GTA 4 next year.

That is unless the demo isn't indicative of the rest of the game, which I strongly doubt.

Nah, it'll sell by the bucketload because its fun.

There's a reason so many games involve lots of law breaking - people play games to escape the real world! Playing football in a game will never be the same as in real life. Obeying the rules of the road and getting stuck in traffic jams in a game is no fun. Games are a form of escapism, they take you into the future or into the past, or some other fantasy universe. Or, when they do leave you in a present, modern setting, they should quite rightly take away the rules we have to adhere to in real life to make for more interesting scenarios!

And of course the ultimate exception to that rule I suppose would be the sims, but that has the whole sandbox approach of being able to rip down your house and design it any way you want, being able to torture sims and set up different scenarios and everything.

A game where you work for a good clean company, drive to work every day obeying all the laws, maybe take a bus for variety, clearly isn't going to sell. It's nothing to do with being controversial. There are many sick and controversial games out there that didn't succeed because they weren't fun.

Anyway, dunno where that came from! Saint's Row blatantly copies GTA, it does some things better and some things worse, GTA was a brilliant game to begin with so that makes Saint's Row above average at worst. Xbox Live could really make it though!

Sounds like it's working to me!!

If you see any blurred textures in the are your going to walk to, don't go there sister, because you will be ported back. If you see cars driving to a point, an then dissappearing, that is another point that will port you back. Likewise, if you see and area completly void of peds or cars it is more than likely a blackhole.

That's all I have heard about it really, don't want to go outside the demo walls myself until I am playing the full game.

I'm with you there, I'd rather explore the ouitside world with the full game when its not the dodgy outside of the demo!! Besides it's probably not 100% right out there and u get pulled back and they probably don't have all the cars and things!
