Jogging and back pain

I have recently taken up jogging on a treadmill. I try to jog for about half an hour every couple of days.

However, I find that I get a lot of upper back pain, particularly when I'm lying in bed at night.

I've tried buying better running shoes, but I still get the pain and I think I'll have to give up jogging if I can't get rid of the pain.

I'd really appreciate any advice that someone might be able to give on this.

    Thanks

A little more information would be helpful.....

Where abouts is your upper back pain?

Do you swing your arms excessively?

Do you tread very heavily when you run?

How recently have you taken up runnning?

What time during the day do you run?

    What do you work at?

    thanks for your reply,

the pain is all over my upper back, below the shoulders mostly

i don't think i swing my arms excessively, i've tried a very short low swing recently

    maybe i do tread heavily

i started about 6 months ago but gave it up for a month or so as i had the back pain... started up again about 6 weeks ago

i run mostly in the evenings / night time

i work at a computer mostly

Sometimes back pain can be a result of fallen arches.. You can get 'orthodic's moulded from your feet and the physio works out the desired height adjustment etc. Put them in your trainers and try that. My girlfriend had a very bad lower back pain for years.. tried everything.. she went to a different physio and he put her using them.. within days she was feeling better. they do take time to adjust to though can be sore to wear at first.

    Just a possiblity..

If you do not run in the evenings do you still have the pain in your shoulders?

If you are drawing our shoulders down as you run and swinging your arms you can cause the stabilising muscles to fatigue in your shoulders.

It may be a wide range of things from postural to your running gait. But really I think that a trip to a physiotherapist may be in order so that they can check out any muscular imbalance and correct it. It is impossible for anyone to give a definitive answer without a physical examination.
