I like a lot of Cathy Loughran's early stuff, especially her Belfast studies.

My wife's granny always thought that Austin Finn was the greatest but my preference was for Colman Doyle. http://www.obrien.ie/book532.cfm

    From Village Magazine
Excellent was also the term used to describe Colman Doyle on Abhar Machnaimh (TG4, Saturday, 8.05pm), a portrait of the life and work of the superb photographer – one of a generation of press photographers like Bill Doyle and Austin Finn – who will be remembered not so much for their bread-and-butter work but for photographs taken of ordinary life over the decades in Ireland. Press photographers are inclined to be overlooked, but if I wanted to understand 1980s Ireland I would bypass the novelists and filmmakers and make straight for the photographic archives of Derek Spiers and Tony O'Shea. Even though the programme only showed a fraction of Doyle's archive and focused too much on Kerry, the images shown were stunning as we followed Doyle on a return visit to the Blasket 50 years after first visiting them. Following on from RTÉ's recent profile of John Minihan, it made April a good month for the recognition of the quiet chroniclers of Ireland.

Another vote for Colman Doyle from me, though I'm no expert on Irish photographers

As far as sports goes, I think Stephen Davison is amazing. He primarily covers road racing (bikes). Maybe it's just cos I love the sport, but I think anyone would appreciate his work. His book "The Ragged Edge" is fantastic and I'd recommend it to anyone. Having tried to get similar shots myself and failed, I came to realise how good he is.

Th only reason that I have a camera is beacuse of a guy called Eddie Scheffer (ok - he is Dutch & not Irish but he lives & works from Dublin).
He is a wedding photographer but I dont think that should be held against him!! He takes great shots & was nice enough to spend a bit of time with me to persuade me to get a camera.

I'll second Eddie Scheffer, apart from being a successful photographer in his work he is also very helpful for new photographers.

Another guy who may not be known to many of you is Richard Gilligan, probably the only Irish photographer to get his pics in the big US skateboard magazines, as well as regularly in the European ones. I think he might have some stuff in this: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1182/3160/1600/SQ1__flyer.jpg

I find a lot of Bryan O'Brien's work in the Irish Times appealing.
I find all the staff photographers in that publication are top notch in
    news/current affairs/sports photos.

Dave Maher from Sportsfile is one of the best sports snappers!

Brian McIlvenny would be regarded as Ireland's leading Lith Printer. He is from the UK but has lived here for many years. His work is beautiful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 349 ✭✭amcinroy

Dare I say it, many of the best landscape photographers working in Ireland today are not Irish.

    (running away very quickly)

    :D;)

Can't speak to the other genres though.

Seems like a very nice guy but top wildlife photographer? Apart from the odd shot I can't say the consistency is there.

Actually most of the guys mentioned above for landscape and weddings are, well, not very exciting. That landscape site is as dull as I have seen I think.

I too liked Austin Finn. Eric Luke, Billy Strickland, Tom Honan, Dave Maher and Derek Spiers. There are a lot of very talented people here that would hold their own against anyone.

There is a book of photography on the go published by Magnum Ireland, I thought. Not all the photographers in it are foreign as far as I remember.

There has never been, to the best of my knowledge, an Irish Magnum member. Martine Franck spent some time here in the 90s, as did Martin Parr in the early 80s, Cartier-Bresson and Bruce Davidson have also worked here. There's a complete list of all Magnum photographers here, I don't recognise any as Irish. A few have passed away recently, so there may be a few openings - anybody feeling confident :)

I can't say I'd really agree. I have his last book (Images of Irish Nature) and there's some lovely stuff there.

to be honest...i dont know any irish photographers and all the names mentioned so far mean nothing...anybody able to compile a nice neat list with links to sites possibly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

The link to the Professional Photographers site in Ireland might help.

The Irish Bill Doyle is noted for his documentary photos of life on the Aran Islands, off the coast of County Galway and of isolated figures in urban settings, usually in Dublin parks, pubs and restaurants.

The Australian Bill Doyle's site is here.

I've never really heard of any famous Irish photographers but from this page I've got to say Mike Brown's wildlife stuff is amazing. Not too impressed with Donovan Wylies stuff but I guess that's just not my type of photography...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

Irish television is packed with historical documentaries these days.
Does anybody know the names of the photographers whose work is represented and where it is kept. There must be a vast body of fine work by photographers who were well known in their day but who never became World Famous.

Ahem... to correct myself here, and give myself a smack on the wrist for laziness in not reading to the end of the list, as Anouilh points out, Donovan Wylie is indeed Irish

No need to resort to violence... All forgiven...

I very much enjoyed this Magnum exhibition in IMMA.
The book would be worth buying.

I missed that unfortunately. The book is nice, and unlike the recent Magnum Magnum, which, although magnificent, is viciously expensive, and would probably require a forklift to move

He is now working for the Guardian covering Afghanistan.. Remarkable story.

As far as the category of wedding photography is concerned, I'd have no hesitation in suggesting White Tea (http://www.whitetea.ie) as the best wedding photographers in Ireland. I came across them at a wedding fair last year and was bowled over by the quality of their images and their down to earthedness (if I can say that?!:).

Images are nice but the rest of the site is rubbish, can't find anything out about them at all, no pricing no contact no about section,
    poor form
