    ok - im running a ubuntu server and cant get past the proxy server. my problem lies in the fact the admin username for example, is ourdomain\admin so when i pico apt.conf i cant use:

    Acquire::http::Proxy "http://ourdomain\administrator : ourpassword@ipaddress:8080";

    as it doesnt understand ourdomain\administrator. If I leave out the 'ourdomain' then it doesnt recognise the username at all and asks for autorisation

    can anyone help?

    I'm guessing that the backslash (with the letter following) is being interpreted as having special meaning. In many places in unix you need to use \\ to get a literal backslash.

    But I'm only guessing!
