You know what erks my blood? Fookers that say they like something just because it's cool to like it or in some cases because it's different to like it, therefore in saying they like it they've become this unique pioneer. I see it time and time again. AN example from years ago: "Ooh have you heard Sigur Ros? ooooh they are sooooooooo cooooool!" Wow (s)he is in to these really "out there" tunes.

This applies to films too; I put it to the forum that most of the people who own their own copy of 2001: A Space Odessy; don't have a clue what's going on in it and were bored through most of it. These same people in a social gathering would say: "It's soooo coool! Stanleeey Kuuubrick is suuuch a greaat director" (I'm not saying he isn't) Sick!

It's more of an issue when it comes to music though.. It seems the worst thing a band can do in the eyes of the fans is become popular because they'll drop you like a bad habit, in search for a new upstart band, just so thay can say at a party .. "hey have you heaaard..." As if their Simon fcukin' Cowell discovering talent or something.

2001: A Space Odessy is the most overhyped piece of shìt movie... along with most kubrick movies (excluding The Shining and maybe Full Metal Jacket).

It's maybe that my little monkey brain doesn't understand it.. but I don't give a shìt... still don't like it

It's an example of pure cinema. Wouldn't really make much of a stage play. I dunno, I like it. I wouldn't watch it too often but it still impresses me. It's much better in the cinema as an experience. I agree with you re Kubrick though. I find him over technical, sterile and mannered(which works with 2001). Dr strangelove, the shining and a clockwork orange are good. The rest? Meh.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I own a copy 2001, along with several cells of the film.

There's no real need to understand it. It's the first part of a four part story, although the last two parts are just silly by way of storyline, they do serve to spell out what's happening with the monoliths.

What is great about the movie is the attention to detail. It was a dose of science "fact" wrapped up in a sci-fi movie.

The fact that classical music is played on the soundtrack while a ship approaches an orbiter and when anothership is heading towards the moon. This is to emphasise that you can't hear rockets in space. You can't hear anything.

Look at the docking sequence when the ship from Earth approches and docks with the orbital station.

It's not a fantastic story I know, very slow. I'd never call it arty, but nor would I call it boring. It's all about setting up an atmosphere.

Having said all that in defence of my favourite film, I do agree with the point the OP is making. It makes me laugh sometimes when you hear "arty types" gushing about how you've not really seen "City of God" if you've not seen it without subtitles and so on....

Christ. What ever happened to just watching and enjoying a film?

"Ooh wow, did you see how the main character developed around the plot line?"
    "I don't care! There was a gunfight."
"But the simple way character B delivered his lines - stunning."
    "SHUT UP!"
"I was a bit disappointed about the lack of involvment that character had with that character though."

    /head explodes.

I know what you mean there are certain things that people are afraid to say they dont like - films that are deemed to be 'classics' for example. The same people rave about the latest bands and wear the latest fashions even if they dont like them because they are devoid of original thought and lack the confiidence to have an opinion. I think its like melanie griffiths charcter in some film where they all claim to have read this big law book and she actually reads it and it turns out that none of the others ever have - its just PC to say so

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭poker_face

I totally agree with the OP. I've had drunken agruments about this topic. I have actually had someone say I wasn't smart enough to appreciate the film Pi just because I thought (as in my own opinion) it was a terrible film. Another sh*t film that tosser's marvel at is "Being John Malkovich".
If anyone's read dave mcwilliam's book there's a chapter on the music taste of what he terms "Hi-Cos". People who can't enjoy music for what it is, instead music should be a statement and should reveal something about their true identity. B*llox, I like music cos I think it's pleasant on the ear and not because it's an expression of who I am, or some other non-sense.

Good title to the thread by the way, i thought it was a gr8 story when I was young. Very true as well, people often can't think for themselves when they're in a group.

christ. i gave up caring about what others think of me years ago.

    if i don't like a film, i'll say i don't like it.

i did like 'being john malkovich' though.

I hate people who rabbit on about David McWilliams as though he's some sort of prophet, what a bunch of thought-free bandwagon jumpers they are.

A friend of mine is exactly like that. He tends to leech other peoples personalities so much so, that he has basically become a Frankenstein Personality.

But I have to agree with you on this. Not fully on Kubrik's films.. i loved Dr Strangelove (though that was more because of Peter Sellers' performance(s) and not because of who the director was). I only heard of Sigur Ros recently and though they are ... interesting ... I wouldn't say they are anything fantastic.

I seem to be the only person in the world that thinks the Artic Monkeys are sh*te.

Also Pete Doherty is a tool and his music is crap. NOT cool. Although Kate Moss, I think she is pretty cool.

No, I also think they're unbelievably crap. I don't like the way they suddenly came out of nowhere and now everyone loves them. A friend of mine tried explaining their reason for this to me, but its just stupid. Their songs are just terrible.

Pete Doherty though.. I've only heard some of his stuff and I have to say i like his Beg, Steal and Borrow song .. well at least his performance of it on that Muppet Johnathon Ross' show.

Is that the one he did on acoustic guitar? I thought that was crap, it had no form to it at all, it led to nothing and the vocals and guitar were terrible.

My opinion of course, not trying to impose.

I think another example of this would be Little Britain. I hate that show. And yet everyone else seems to love it.

And to a lesser extent; drugs. I don't like people who take drugs because they think its cool, and that if they do them, they'll be cool too. I can't stand it. I've always been highly anti-drugs, but some of my friends have gotten like this.

I dunno, I quite liked that song though.

its really nice when teenagers grow up to become adults, and they dont actually care how another person expressees themselves.
unfortauntely, until then, if anyone does or says anything or holds and opinion that differs from their own, they tend to get all annoyed about it.

I'm not referring to the ones who start it for other reasons. I'm talking about the ones who start because they think its cool, smoke more so they can be a part of a crowd, brag about how stoned they got, and things like that. I'm pretty sure that people know what I'm talking about.

For the record, my 2 cents, Clockwork orange the book was great, the film was ok but it didnt really do it justice but the casting was great, pete doherty is a great song writer with a great voice, one of the best to come out of england in the past decade. his drug problem/image is his own business.

The greatest "Emperor's new clothes" at the moment are all these political parties going around trying to flog their emperor/empress who will give us new clothes after the next election! They are worse than the door-to-door religious pedlers who at least believe in their product!!

What do you mean by "adults" ? There are a lot of old fogies out there with the same mentality. "You like this or you are not one of the gang" I think what you meant to refer to, is a person with a mature mind who can form an opinion of their own? Age sadly has nothing to do with a mature mind :D

Hey, where are the naked people?

Some films are perceived as cool for a reason. They actually are cool! If you understand the themes and the plot and the characters engaging with themselves and with the audience, why not talk about it? Nobody is forcing these conversations down anyones throat.

Although admittedly, pretensiousness when it comes to the arts sucks ass.

Down with that sort of thing!

I am one of those people who will refuse to see an overly-hyped movie simply because it was overly hyped. Titanic? Waited 5 years to give in and finally see it. Don't care for it. Take out the lead characters and the story would be more interresting.

As far as music goes, I love all styles and genres, and finding new ones to listen to is a treat. I introduce others to these new bands because I think they will appreciate them. Not because it is a hot topic.

Guess I dance to the beat of my own drum.

I agree, people that are at a party that say "Oh, I was listening to them when nobody knew thier name" or "Oh, I was watching that show/liked that movie, before everyone" can be annoying, but I appreciate people coming to me and saying , "Hey, check this out, you might enjoy it".
