leftie or a rightie?

Right-handedness is the most common. Right-handed people are more dextrous with their right hands when performing a task.

Left-handedness is less common than right-handedness. Left-handed people are more dextrous with their left hands when performing a task.

Mixed-handedness, also known as cross-dominance, is being able to do different tasks better with different hands. For example, mixed-handed persons might write better with their right hand but throw a ball more efficiently with their left hand. This could also refer to pianists, because different sections of pieces are usually composed to fit the abilities of the different hands, considering that the right hand is usually for melodies and the left-hand, harmonies. However, some people often refer to handedness as the hand that a person uses to write, so this form of handedness is not usually referred to.

Ambidexterity is extremely rare. A true ambidextrous person is able to do any task equally well with either hand. The condition is very rare, although it can be learned (those who master it in the end tend to sway towards their originally dominant hand, of course).

Just wondering what handedness the average user of boards.ie (or AH) is? I, myself, am a leftie, but a true leftie... I have really no coordination or abilities with my right hand. I even have to use the mouse for a computer on the left hand side. I think a lot of people, unknown to themselves, fall into the "mixed handedness" category, being able to do certain things with there right hand (like using a mouse) but writing with their left. I've only ever met 2 other people in my life that are truly left handed, i've met others who believe they are left handed but seem to have no problem doing some things with their right hand.

An interesting article from wiki is Laterality which also has some interesting other wiki pages referenced.

I'm also wondering what you think the benefits of your individual handedness is?

Don't you know being left handed is a sign of the devil?

I'm right-handed, but I type with my left hand...

    So I guess really I'm mixed-handed.

Shouldn't you type with both hands?

I also switch the fork and knife sometimes.

leftie here but considering most things are designed for right handed people ive had to adapt to being mixed handedness. its kinda weird, i kick a football with my left foot but throw a ball with my right hand. i write with my left hand but open tin cans with my right one, going counter clockwise which is why i like to use the can openers you stab the tin with as oppose to the ones you twist a turner on :D

Left hand for writing but right for a lot of other things (throwing, opening lids, etc). Also my right foot is slightly better than the left.

Touch typing is for the weak! I can do 60 wpm with my left hand when I feel like it.

lol, do you know why that is? Its because in the bible God always kept everything good on his right hand (i.e. christ ascended to gods right hand), and seperated the bad to the left. The reason why the word "left" originated from "lyft" in anglo saxon (meaning useless) and french "gauche" (meaning awkward) is because the Church, believeing the left was associated with evil, forced children to write with their right hands, thus forcing naturally left handed people to be slower and awkward as there was no way for them to write better using their opposite hand. My dad remembers in school there was one left handed kid that got hit with the meter stick every day when he tried to write with his left hand, because he was always falling behind everyone else.

Aye, even up to recently it was quite frowned upon. My english teacher in secondary school was forced to write with her right hand and she was a fairly young woman.

    I'm mixed handed..

Write with right but when I was really young I used to write with left because my mother forced to me use the right side.. Now I'm used to it..

I play snooker with left hand but when it comes to using the rest, the cue will be on the right hand..

I play badminton with both hand but the right hand is better..

Yeah I have to switch knife too when it comes to dining

hell while there was no brutality some teachers tried to get me to write with my right hand when i was in primarary and that was the mid eighties. theres still a weird attitude to it, which is strange cause its a good indication of creativity and artistic ability. you think someone would cop on and steer people in that direction

to paraphrase bill bailye, left handedness, causes amazing musical ability but can sometimes result in genocide. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭fuzzywiggle

    Right handed.
My younger brother is left handed though, and one of his teachers in primary school (mid 90s) forced him to write with his right hand, though he quickly went back to his left hand once he got out of that class.

Indeed. That's why I'm proud of my right-handedness. My old piano teacher was ambidextrous. That's why I was wary of her.

My mom was left handed when she was young but her evil teacher [who happened to be a nun] used to whack her hand every time she wrote and forced her to use her right hand when writing.

    Right-Handed.
Though if I was to go out and play golf (not that i do play golf mind you:D) i can only use left handed players golfclubs.
Same when I play hurling, my good side is generally right handed peoples bad side..

Left handed, But play a right handed double bass, and I can play right handed drums. But normally play left handed guitar and drums.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous!

So yeah, I'm right handed. I have 5 siblings, three of those are lefties. I don't know if I have a point.

Mixed-handed but would favour my left hand for writing and playing football. Using right handed items is a necessity though, thankfully no problems with right-handed scissors, can openers etc.

I'm right handed. I write with it I do most thing requiring dexterity with my right hand. I play piano and can do complicated things with my left hand - but it takes a lot longer too learn than with the right hand.

    I'm left footed.

My mother is a natural 'lefty' and she writes with her right hand. The nuns in her school wouldn't let her write with the left hand as it was a sign of the Devil! Lunatic nuns!

that man is a genius and has kept me entertained for many years.

i'm left predominantly handed, but i can use my right hand for many things.

i can also kick a ball with both feet, although better with the left.

Leftie all the way. My right hand is mostly useful for typing and holding a knife (I never inverted that order). Nothing sinister about us lefties :)

I'm right handed but use my left when drinking. My brother writes with his left but uses his right when playing sports etc.

    I'm both footed.

    Left-handed:
    Writing
    Snooker/Pool
    Guitar/Violin/etc.
    Saw/Hammer/Breadknife (but use standard L-R fork/knife configuration)
    Snowboard ("goofy")

    Right-handed:
    Golf
    Football (right footed)
    Basketball
    Darts
    Can opener
Computer Mouse (though was originally left, but changed once I had to work in a company where they were all on the right)

Oh which reminds me, don't ever shake an indians hand with your left one. They all wipe their arse with their left and eat with their right, so its an insult to put out your left hand to greet someone.
