I have to confirm this with Luke but I'm gonna put a table on for a mixed game in the Fitz starting Saturday at 6pm.
The buy in is a max of 25 euro and it's half pot limit. Myself, Paddy Hicks, 5starpool are confirmed. Ecksor and a pal of mine are maybes. So there's 5 or 6 seats left.

But the only and most important aspect of it is that you bring your happy face, you are not invited if:
    a. you have something to prove to the world
    b. you aren't on familiar terms with personal hygiene.

other than that anyone can play.
post here if you want to be put on the list.

I'll put a sheet together with the basics of each game. but they are really very simple.
    no hold'em

    des.

    ntl is now in.
and it's been changed to 'Orsie! to include irish holdem which is three cards dealt with one being discarded post flop after the betting.

Doc, can't make this Saturday due to other commitments but if this takes off any chance of it becoming a regular feature?

No place for the general then Des? I have played half-pot limit games before and they are a bitch to knock poeple off of. I'm sure this will become clear one way or another, but I presume this is open to change if the game is proving somewhat farcical with 6 people seeing every river.

I know it is mostly just to have a different and fairly fun game and isn't up there with the hundred game in terms of seriousness, but I am sure will be open to suggestions.

    Put me on the list!

What will the blinds be? Why is there no 5 card draw?

omaha, razz, seven card stud, irish holdem, E???

I'll have to break out the old super system!

i'm in... and maybe one other... saturday at 6!

Sure Dom, democracy rules. up to a point!

I think after 8pm we can up the antes if everyone wants to. My old pal Paddy Hicks won't be interested in playing for high stakes so really what he wants goes. But Paddy may well play the tourney at 8.30 or in fact may not show up. If we get 12-15 names then at least we'll be assured of one full table with maybe even a second shorthanded. anyway I'll talk to Luke and confirm everything.

I think Paddy is due to be in the bubble tournie at 7 on Saturday......

i'm trying to sell this to one or two other student types as a cheap way to learn another game or two. i like the max spend of 25 euro, at least first time out.

Damn wikipedia correcting my preconceived notions.

H.O.R.S.E is a form of poker commonly played at the high stakes tables of casinos. It consists of rounds of play alternating between hold 'em (H), Omaha eight or better (O), razz (R), seven card stud (S) and seven card stud eight or better (E).

A default HORSE game has hi/lo afaik and Des definitely mentioned omaha hi/lo the last time he posted something like this up.

DIT don't bother going out of your way. u and ur pal will be enough. There's plenty i know who will fill up the table.

and to be honest the last thing i want there is a mob of smelly loud students. so just you and your pal for the moment. in fact I would prefer it if you didn't invite them along.

    rounders - u playing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,443 ✭✭✭califano

No Doc but its a good idea what your doing. Gives players with the desire to learn a good platform so i hope it goes well if you get it going. If the weather is bad i might play the holdem tournie and drop over to say hello.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

Being like DIT and a cheap studenty type, this appeals me as cheap way learning some new games.
Now just need to work on that personal hygiene part and I will be sorted!

It is. What Doc described is Pineapple.

Playing Stud + Stud hi low + Stud low (razz) isn't that much fun for players who don't really know the games, I'd suggest replacing one of the stud games with 2-7 lowball .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

    okey dokey,

Luke has agreed to this and Nic Ryan has said he'll deal. At the end of the week I'll put a list of who expressed an interest first.
hotspur, jtsuited, cooker3, baker1, hope to see you's there.
basically it'll be dealers choice, we'll play whatever we want, but please no hold'em.
Nic put together a bunch of games that have the acronym horse****! I'll put together a sheet with the basic rules on it.
scouser hopefully it will take off to the extent that'll it'll be on even when I'm not up for it. hopefully.

    Good luck, d.

I can see 2 tables being formed now... I may make an appearance but dont get your hopes up :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

Sounds like a couple of tables alright, but it's likely a few won't turn up or will leave early. We'll just keep it friendly, I'm not trying to put anyone in debtors prison. I don't think a tourney is a good idea coz half the players would be out with nothing to do after the first few crazy hands.
Thanks for the responses, we'll just take it easy and have a bit of craic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

it's over, it's off, repeat, the package is in transit.
    sorry, watching a thriller,

so this is still on and i hope we get a full table, it's just a bit of craic, so come along if u want to. i hope to keep it going for a few hours so come along after 7 or 8 if you want to.

don't worry if you don't know what you're doing, i'm making this up as I go along anyway :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

I am still up for it, just make sure I get some project work out of the way and will be there.

Nic put together a bunch of games that have the acronym horse****!

I don't wanna take all the credit on that one...

this was what someone sugested when me and a few of the other players played a modified horset game ...modified cause it was PL hold em PL omaha FL (for the rest) razz stud omaha8 and 2-7 tripple draw[1] ^_^

    -Nic

[1] nothing like drawing 4 and then hitting your wheel after drawing 1 on the second draw...

if this were to get off the ground I'd play it every week.

I was supposed to put together a sheet with various rules but its easier to just introduce each game at the table.

The only two questions that need to be made clear is:
    1. whether the ace can be played in a low hand or just in a high hand

    and

    2. who starts the betting in the stud games

and these we'll clear up pretty quickly at the table.

i'm scribbling down some notes on each game and will check with the other players to see if we all agree. i hope this will be some fun. I think the most anyone is gonna lose or win is about 50 euro. so if you have any questions we'll hammer them out at the table?

edit: actually, that might not be the case now that I think about it, you might lose your shirt. btw, anyone who wears a hat that isn't a baseball cap (or a cool metrosexual woolie thing) gets an extra euro to gamble with, and if it's a porkpie like Popeye Doyle's in the French Connection you get 2 euro.

    edit:
so far we have about 13 names, if 8 of them turn up I'll be delighted.
ecksor, 5starpool, ntlbell, jtsuited, paddyhicks, ditpoker and pal, cooker3, rounders123(?), baker1, crumbs, cianos (?), bobafett 3099, rnger

    any others interested ?
if it turns out that more than 9 turn up a few of us will sit out a few rounds so everyone gets a few hands in, that'll be the case for 7 card stud anyway where only 7 can play i think anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭nicryan

don't worry about all that des...I'll talk to you before we start (on the sly) and then announce it to the table when you agree with the way I think it should be *_*....

    prelim:
O is for Omaha8...8 high is the worst qualifying low hand...aces are low and its a-5 lowball on the low (meaning straights and flushes do NOT count against you for the low half). if there's an odd chip it goes to the high hand.

R is for Razz...razz is 7 stud lowball...again it uses the a-5 lowball rules...ace is low and straights/flushes don't count...there's an ante and the high card on board brings in the betting on the first round, then the lowest up cards starts the betting on subsequent streets

S is for Stud...standard 7 card stud...ante and the low card brings in the betting on the first round - highest hand leads out on subsequent streets

I is for 3 card Irish...3 cards to each player discard one on the flop (from the button eg small blind will discard first) discarded before the betting round. after that its ho-ho-hold em

E is for Stud8...7card stud high/low...ante and the lowest card brings it in. the highest hand leads out the betting on subsequent streets. 8 low being the worst low hand that can qualify. A-5 lowball. if there's an odd chip it goes to the high hand.

    -Nic

    perfeckt nic!

i'm looking forward to playing three card Irish. we can play four card if others want too.

and I want to play a round of old fashioned 5 card draw just for kicks. maybe.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 10,501 Mod ✭✭✭✭ecksor

One suggestion I have (which is nicked from the Reuben and Ciaffone book, not from personal experience) is that in PL stud apparently the high card is the normal bring in since it stops the pot from getting too big too early. Might be worth considering for a half pot-limit game.

I'm up for a bit of draw too.

Anyway, I'm going to take a nap since my brain is a bit fried. Hopefully won't be late!

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm still confused about the blinds. 1-1 or something like that? Even then it's only 25 BBs. Does the fitz have smaller denominations?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭White Knight

They have .50c but not usually used on poker tables if i remember correctly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

max .50-1 we might even make it 50-50 or less! :D
antes definitely won't be more than fifty old pence.

right I've done up a list and its all printed out and spiffy so when des gets in I'll go over it with him then print up more copies to give to players...

and no as much as I do like the ol 2-7 tripple draw...there will not be any draw games included in the list cause they're just a pain in the arse...

right, I'm off out to find a pair of mirror shades and two buzzy rings for me and the dealer.
i'll be there about half five Nic. we'll work out the finger tap signals when i get there. tx again for going to the trouble.

Good event. Got changed to PL later on by Nic because he couldn't find any .25c chips. My only beef was getting my money into two bad spots then going broke on a stud hi/lo hand with Doc Farrell in a coinfip.
    $ pokenum -mc 10000 -7s8 Ac As 4h 5d - 7c 7s 6h 6s / 6c

I was surprised by that actually. I thought I'd gotten my money in with the worst of it there.

In summary, one of the most enjoyable games I've played for ages and I hope this takes off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

sorry about that one ecksor, i honestly thought u were good for at least the low hand and i honestly wouldn't have minded it if i had have lost.

thanks to everyone who turned up, especially the students for whom the money was an issue and who turned out to be formidable opponents. ditstudent doesn't count as he looks to old to be a student and won a nice pot at the end that i primed!

anyway, i would definitely play again and would love if someone else there was willing to organise it as I have a lot of drinking and a little dating to focus on. I'm willing to put my name down for the next one. If anyone else is interested then please mention it here too.

thanks especially to Nic for dealing such a head wrecking 3 hours. great job, especially with the half pot limit high low nightmares!

time for a beer, see you all again, d.

think that's me your talking about des. and i'm only 22, it's just the years of rock and roll have taken their toll. And i haven't shaved lately!

And i'm not really a student. Well technically i am on their books as a postgrad but the area i'm doing it in happens to be my career, so it doesn't count!
Really good game, most fun i've had in there for a while.

Just tonight something has come up which means i will probably not be playing any poker at all for the next while, but if i can manage any time, I'll try my darnedest to get to this game again.
Well worth a go, great fun and a humble profit made (slightly more than humble taking the size of the game into account!).

Brilliant event lads, most fun i've had playing poker in a while will definatly be up for this on a regular basis. Really enjoyed the Stud games especially hi/lo :D. Omaha 8 is probably my worst game (except i did scoop one big pot with a busted low draw:eek: ). Great games and a bit of craic! So who finished winner for this game?? (except me:D ) Come on be honest lads..

Oh yeah, I think that 3 card "that's not really Irish cos there's a sign in the merrion that says different" game would be more interesting as a double flop game. Maybe I'm getting a bit ridiculous, but it could make the decision for which card to drop a bit more interesting.

chief, who won and more importantly who lost, isn't really that important. that you all had the balls to play is what matters.
no one won more than could be wagered in one hand in the regular cash game. i lost 50 bucks in the first hour if that's of any use!

Great game, I would definately be up for doing it again on a regular basis.
I had a 80% profit to show for the night so definately a success for me :)

Also great job by Nic in dealing it, must have been tough trying to calculate all the pots so good evening all round.
