I'm fed up with Gillette's silly prices for blades, whats the best alternative?

I plan on heading down to boots and getting a new razor today, I want a good razor with reasonably easy to get blades at a sane price.

i use tesco's own brand 3 blade razors which gives me a good shave. Now getting the replacements blades can be a bit of a b1tch as they seem to sell out of them pretty fast.

    Merkur HD

Tescos sell the blade in packs of 10 for about €3.50, or if you check online you can buy in bulk packs of feather, merkur, personna, or derby blades much cheaper.

I use Aldi's Carlton (I think its called) Its a 3 blade razor and is pretty cheap but gives a good shave.

Thanks guys Ill have a look in boots and tesco's, Aldi's a bit of a walk.

Might take a look at the double edges too, they're cheap.......and deadly.

It seems to me that the cheapest solution in the long term is an old fashioned razor

True, and I was reading that site a few minutes ago.

Thing is I get up 7am having slept for around 4 hours and I wouldn't trust myself with anything sharper than a spoon in this condition, also I like to shave as fast as possible so I can get back to bed for 20mins sleep (the best sleep ever).

A straight razor would eat into my sleep time and I'd consequently get sacked from work. Possibly.

You could also decide to grow a manly beard.

IMO you couldn't even peel spuds with a Boots razor, and Tesco razors aren't much better. An old fashioned safety razor gives a good shave and the blades (Wilkinson or Gillette) are cheap - you can get the razor and blades in Boots.
Lidl and Aldi aren't bad. The Aldi blades seems to be incompatible with every other known razor though.

I'm leaning toward the double edged razor all right. Seems quite economical.

Good thread, I was planning on trying some of those aldi ones when my current blades are finished. Anyone tried both the aldi ones and the tesco ones? I suppose lidl have their own too?

I have tries both Lidl and Tesco ones and would recommend Tesco 3-blade razor - best value/performance ratio of any one I have used.

The beauty of the mach3 is how they stay so sharp and don't get clogged up with hair nearly as quick as any other razer I've ever tried.

They are miles ahead of the competition in my eyes :D  :D

i use tesco swivel-head diposables n der better than MachIII

With a DE you can shave your entire face without having to rinse if you really wanted to. Would like to see a mach 3 make that boast:P

I agree - It must be a few years now since I tried changing brands from Mach3. The prices are silly, but when you change from them, it can be a bit of a learning curve not to rip the face off yourself with other brands when you do get around to changing! :(

As for the clogging up problems - I suppose you'd get used to just rinsing the blade more.

But I would be wary of changing now - unless anyone has changed from being a 100% Mach3 user to another brand that they found just as good?

I use the Sainsburys three blade razors. Good shave but yep, they do clog up a bit. Also i've noticed the hair grows back quicker.....or they aren't shaving as close. Still though, pack of 10 heads about 3 sterling and they have an Aloe Vera stripe (allegedly).

i have an electric one for those early mornings...in case there's no hot water

    :D

    or I'm late

There has to be more than 2 blade manufacturers on this planet.

I went back to electic. I am beginning to look a little hairy but 100% shaven is over rated.

I tried going back to the classic style razor.. it is cheaper however the shave takes ages and its far easier to cut yourself.. so im back with mach 3 now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

I bought the Wilkinson Sword classic, plain double edged razor.

Used it twice, cuts very close and I haven't cut myself yet. Takes about the same amount of time to shave, little harder to do the neck without the swivle head.

The best part is 5 blades are €2 and the razor is €5 with 5 blades.

What i did and I found it great cos the price of blades is astounding... i bought a good electric razor and i use this every day about every third day i shave with a blade .. I can make a blade last ages doing this...I was using mach threes but saved even more by going for the gillette g2's.
be patient..It can take a while for the electric to give you a good shave as your hair has to get aclimatised to it...it'll grow a bit heavier..

How much are you pay for blades. perfumeirlenad have 16 blades for €26 thas €1.60 a blade most people will get 2-3 shaves out of a blade thats not bad is it?.I get blades even cheaper at a local market that on sundays, havent bought any in months though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭arch20000

    JohnnieM is speaking the truth!

I use a electric during the week, don't shave on Saturdays as it's a day of rest and Sunday night, do a wet shave after the shower and that's me sorted for Monday. Shaving after the shower makes for a good quick painless shave.

The electric is great once you wear it in. And the hand razors last for weeks.

Pity there isn't a pill or something you could take to stop facial hair growing!

Actually you can probably take estrogen for that.

    You first.

I'd rate the Tesco as the best (but can no longer get them in my local store:mad: ) and the Aldi ones a close second (I think these blades will even fit the Tesco razor) €2.99 for razor/3 triple blades, €1.99 for 4 replacement blades; great value.
Lidl razors just hacked me to bits so I avoid them like the plague!

perfumeireland.com sell a 16 pack of Mach3 Turbo blades for €25.99. I just stocked up again from them and these will last me over a year. I've tried all sorts of cheap blades, Boots own, Tesco, Lidl and Aldi and found them all to cut and scrape rather than shave. I think it depends on your own skin so you're best off trying a few and see which one is best.

Use a shaving oil like King of Shaves or Total Shaving Solution too, I find that much better than gel/foam.

I just won an auction on ebay for 24 mach3 power blades including postage to rep of ireland it cost me €25 euro. Pretty good value consitering Tesco are charging €22.99 for a 8 pack.

Here is the Guy who I bought them from. I emailed him before hand and he confirmed that the postage to Rep Of Ireland was £2.99. He has a few more auctions ending throughout the weekend.

Thats hilarious about the rfid chips

Was talking to a fella who works in Musgraves Cash and Carry, he was saying that a pallet of mach3 blades is about 60 thousand euro most valuable thing they carry. RFID tags could be invaluable in tracking that kind of valuable merchandise - musgraves should stick a reader on the back door ;)

If you use gillette sensor razors the womens blades fit them and they are almost half the price, only difference is that the womens blades are white instead of grey.

I'd second that, I've tried lots of razors and I think they're the best:

    * Swivel Head
    * Twin Blade
    * Lubricating Strip

    ...and just €2.28 for 20.

Clicked on the guide section on ebay re mach 3 razors and the following appears:

Be careful when buying Mach 3 turbo blades on ebay. Many of the blades for sale are not Gillette quality and do not provide a good shave. They look like and are packaged in the same way but are clearly seconds...

    linky: http://search.reviews.ebay.co.uk/members/londondesign

    No eastrogen on ebay ...

Interesting piece there, I have used 2 already and have not noticed any differences to the previous mach3 power blades which I have been using.

Ya I just won an auction on ebay for 20 Mach 3 Power blades for 16e, plus 3e postage from a guy in Cork. Not bad at all at all

I got a pack of 32 Mach3 off eBay a while back. They looked perfect, and first couple of shaves seemed fine.

BUT... they got worse and worse. Just sitting in the bathroom boxed, they are going blunt, rusty looking marks on a few of them.

With the few that I have left, im now using them just once then throwin them out, 'cos now they arent even up to a second shave.

They may be less than half the price, but they are worthless. Avoid these fakes.

I dont know how many on eBay are actually real, but the only other person I know who bought them off eBay, has had the same problem.

Im going to try some of the other suggestions on this thread...
