I read that Film Four is free from next Sunday - will it be available 'free to air' in Ireland?

Wonder whether NTL will give it to us(no chance)

I don't have sky.. I have one of those free lidl setups. Just saw the add saying Film Four would be free from 23rd of July - I am wondering if i'll be able to pick it up?

Sky EPG Channel 315 from sunday FTA, (Free To All):p ,yes a lidl reciever will pick it up.

Thats providing it is infact FTA on Sky. Bare in mind that Channel 4 is FTA on Sky, but requires a freesat card (i purchased one a while ago!), so nothings concrete yet to say FilmFour won't go the same way!

Obviously this only applies to Sky, not freeview etc.

That makes it FTV (Free To View), not FTA (Free To Air).

    Can you confirm that?

Channel Four's notion on the meaning of FTA can differ from everybody else.

Personally, I think it's most likely to be FTV, needing a viewing card.

Would the speculators think that if it's FTV that those of us with an FTV card will be able to pick it up? Fairly likely, right?

If it's to be FTV, then yes, most likely.

I think there is a chance it still could end up under a subscription, a la More4! Though, I hope not.

An advertisment on ch 4 last night does indeed say that from sunday film 4 will be available free on cable, satellite and freeview.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

the ads have been saying that for weeks. what isnt clear is if it will be FTA or FTV on satellite

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 845 ✭✭✭djpaul

I contacted one of the guys i know at Filmfour his name is Myles Green, He told me that Filmfour will be available across all platforms and you should be able to pick it up on a FTA Reciever Like ITV,BBC Etc.

Unlike E4, which is largely FTA but remains a pay TV channel on satellite, FilmFour will be available to all Sky and Freesat viewers.

"Should be" isn't a very definitive answer.

Anyway, not long to wait now.

Why do I get the feeling that after the waiting and speculation, people will wonder why they bothered thinking about the channel at all!

No they mean FTV not FTA. "Freesat from Sky" means FTV card.

C4 is NOT FTA, but FTV. It is on "freesat" in sense that a Freesat from Sky card works.

The BBC has a different concept of "freesat" to that of Sky and C4

Film4 was Free to Air (Not FTV)for about an hour today, 10.00am to 11.00. It has now reverted to a subscription channel.

Hopefully Sky dont do the same thing they did with More4 and make it free to only Sky Digital Subscribers!

Film 4 Weekly has not gone from the EPG and FilmFour is now Film 4, also with a +1 version.

They're running promos, that are FTA. Weren't these promos previously FTV or basic sub?

Let's hope it remains fully FTA. Being fully FTA, it woudl gain advantage over TCM, since TCM recently went from FTA to encrypted.

The promo continues to say the channel will be "free to everyone" but that's still too vague!

Free to everyone in the UK... Free to everyone with Freesat card? :)

TCM went recently encrypted? I think over a year or two years ago? Or more?

    TCM, encrypted 2 years ago.
2 days to go, to see if F4 go FTA, FTV.
    any bets,
F4 say FTA but in fact FTV like E4.
    :p:p

    Just checked Film4 now FTA,(21.37)
    Excellent news, next CH4?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭JohnDigital

It will be FTV according to the FAQ on their website:
    How will I receive Film4?
The channel will launch on Freeview for the first time and will continue to be available to all cable and satellite viewers at no additional cost. On digital satellite, the Film4 Channel will be available to freesat viewers as well as Sky digital subscribers.

Yeah, but its the way they say "freesat".
It's a wait and see job.

Ch 315 is viewable on my FTV EPG, if that's an indication of anything. Just promo rubbish now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

It's FTA at the minute (no card) we'll see what it is on Monday when the regular staff are on.

If it is FTA really (I find it hard to beleive), C4 will be some day when contract expires..

Can anyone remember when E4 or More 4 Previews were FTA or FTV when
they started up? The fact that FIlm4 Promos is FTA at the moment is a good
sign, However, Will the rug be pulled out from under us again??

    Let's see.;)

Its broadcasting in the clear that means its FTA the same as BBC & ITV. I believe this signals a broader move to FTA by all Channel 4 channels in the next 12-18 months.

They were FTV! However, at this stage of the game I think we can safely say its not encrypting.

From another thread I read elsewhere, somebody said that when they rang NTL, they were told that NTL had no plans to make the channel free.

I really enjoyed Lost in Translation.

Somebody is on the ball updating Wikipedia - look at the last entry in the Trivia section. It references the fact that this was the first film shown on Film4 when it went FTA.

I'm sure this is covered elsewhere, but it's now "free" on NTL Digital as well.

    Yep, it seems to FTA!

    Great news!

    pedantic mode = on

i.e. in a basic package, nothing is free on cable as you MUST have a sub to connect at all.

    pedantic mode = off

I have to admit I was wrong and I am surprised. I was convinced it would be FTV.

I won't complain, though as it means it will work for Sat PVR and PC.
