Matterazzi Zidane Competitive Sport

When I was a kid I was much more of a Matterazzi then a Zidane. I was over competitive, not the best player on the pitch; in competitve games often the worst but willing to do anything to contribute to the team and keep my place.

I used to name call, flick people on the ear, punch them in the back of the head when I knew no official was looking.

Basically the defenders are the kids who are naturally worst and the forwards are the kids who are naturally best. If you are an extraordinary natural athlete and I am not then I will have to cheat to mark you out of the game.

The thing is this is all encouraged by the adults involved.

So my question is this; should competitive sport for adolescents be banned.

 That's...... no. Ban sports so they have no more outlets for anger = 100% in the number of scummers walking the streets. And there's already way too many of those.

I just can't take that question seriously, sorry if you wanted a discussion or something :(

Pighead really hopes your drunk or in a daze or 7 years old. That is a rubbish question. A much more valid question would be this; should competitive posting on message boards by mountainyman be banned?
    YES YES YES.

    No, but you should be.
Have you carried that "sporting" attitude through to the rest of your life? I should hope not.

WTF? I've seen a hell of a lot of awful forwards, and a hell of a lot of excellent defenders. Just because you felt you had to resort to cheating, doesn't mean there's no such thing as a good defender.

Also, I don't follow your argument. You seem to saying that because some players are better than others, all sport should be banned?

    Why yes, yes it should!
I also think we should ban all idiots from the known universe, skangers should be put up against the wall and shot, religious nutters should all be relocated to the north pole and the american government should be transported to Iraq and left there so they can see first hand what they've done.

Let them hear what they've done from the mouth of the Iraqi Information Minister himself:
"The British forces which were dropped there have been eliminated mostly on the (battle)field, except for those who fled ... It is a complete defeat ... Amazingly the Americans have pushed the British to do that. They pushed them ahead as if it is an experiment. The result was very tragic for the British."

    and

“We have placed them in a quagmire from which they can never emerge except dead”

"Washington has thrown their soldiers on the fire"

"I speak better English than this villain Bush"

"These cowards have no morals. They have no shame about lying"

"They're not even [within] 100 miles [of Baghdad]. They are not in any
place. They hold no place in Iraq. This is an illusion ... they are
trying to sell to the others an illusion."

    :D

since this has been moved to sport (hard to see why as it is a pub talk kind of question) I will ask a follow on question.

1 If you coach adolescent sport how would you deal with a player like I was.
2 Are there any cases where a defender is the best player in the team before under 18s level.
Except representative squads or maybe the likes of Home Farm where everyone is shot hot.

Generally if they were they would be moved from a flat back four to a holding midfielder role.

And no I didn't carry it on. I stopped as soon as I began playing less competitively and didn't have to try to play against people much nbetter than me. But if I had been good enough for competitive sport in my 20s (League of Ireland division 2 or better) I would have been pretty much the same.

That's easy. Watch out for it in training and call them on it every time. Don't play them, and make sure they know why.

A holding midfielder role is generally still a defensive one. It depends on what you mean by 'best player'. Attackers generally appear more skilled, because they're the exciting players. It's difficult to appear glamourous when they're defenders. That doesn't mean they're not skilled. Any half-decent coach will pick solid defenders who can tackle without resorting to punching in the back of the head, even from a young age, and I've seen plenty of excellent young defenders (in gaelic football and soccer)

Wouldn't happen in training. But in your own case what about say a cup semi final.
But your approach is the right one. So why do some coaches tolerate this sort of behaviour.

I agree about defending but I still believe that attackers at non representative levels are more skilled (stepovers etc.) and at under 12s they tend to be more coordinated. Defending is something you can learn and that competitive spirit helps there as you will work to close off space make tackles etc. My point is that when a child is asked to man mark a better player both that child and his coach know what is being asked for and that is aggression.

Perhaps instead of punishing the player the coach shoud be punished.

Answer your own question. Would you encourage your players to cheat?

moved to sports eh? no wonder i missed it

    1) , if a kids punching someone in the head...take him off, let him know why he was taken off. let him know he'll be taken off everytime he does anything similar

    2) yeah there was when i played hurling as a kid, the half back was often the most skillfull player on the pitch.
