I see they are making it free in the UK and will be including adverts but will it be free on NTL?

Is it available on NTL as it is (as an extra subscription)? If so, I'd imagine the same will happen on NTL, it'll become part of the main channel lineup.

    yeah, it is. Here's hoping!

It will be free (or part of the basic package) everywhere. Film Four Weekly is being dropped, there will just be the one channel 3pm-3am. Listings for the first week are available now through Digiguide.

Not terribly impressive tbh, no change there then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 900 ✭✭✭cosgrove80

There is a downside though. Still they do show some great films
Will the FilmFour free-to-air service carry any advertisements during films?
Yes, like most other free-to-air channels the new FilmFour channel will have advertising breaks.
We are passionate about films and it is in our interest to show them in the best possible environment, so we will do our utmost to handle advertising breaks as carefully as possible.

Do they mean the ads will be between the films?

Sounds like during the films, as in every half hour or so.

so basically its free for everyone who has a tele regardless of what package they have?

even those of us that have NTL but dont actually pay for it because they fiddled with the ickle box at the side of the house? (next door neighbours  )

Is it free on Chorus anyone know?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

what have Chorus said? if anyone knows it will be them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭crybaby

it is pretty rubbish most of the time to be perfectly honest although it does have
its moments like showing all of the studio gibhli films recently and it is defintley been making itself more appealing to the mainstream over the last 18 months. they tend to show a huge amount of very mediocre foreign films late at night dont know why i didnt cancel the thing a long time ago but im interested to see how they intend to change it now thats it gone free. hopefully more classic american and european stuff will be shown instead of the constant average arthouse films

Whatever about the channel itself I'm loving the ad for it:

Ewan MacGregor "Why do I have to be the tomato? Am I a fruit? Am I a vegetable?..." Brilliant :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Rhys Ifans (sp?) going door to door - brilliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,326 ✭✭✭Zapp Brannigan

Will it be available to just basic NTL customers (not digital)?

    from their website - http://www.channel4.com/film/ffchannel/holding-faq1.html
"We are going free-to-air, this means the new FilmFour service will soon be available to everyone with digital TV"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,501 ✭✭✭Fuzzy_Dunlop

Look out for the movie Dead Man's Shoes on this, they are bound to be showing it cos i've seen it in the ads on filmfour before the launch and they had something to do with tthe making of it i think, brilliant movie

Does naybody know if Chorus Digital will have Film Four

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,797 ✭✭✭sweetie

Not sure about chorus but when I rang NTL they said they had no plans to make it free.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 255 ✭✭AliasFan47

Thanks Sweetie I could have guessed as much Digital TV companies in Ireland don't provide the best services.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

why should they make it free in Ireland though? it's not as if they have to. the ads about Film 4 going free only mention UK companies, Sky, ntl and Telewest. no mention of UPC (who own Chorus and ntl in this country)

Why should they continue charging for it? Do they think people will now subscribe to a channel that is free in the UK, and now also has adverts thrown in.

Though, I suppose it all may boil down to how much UPC has to pay to carry Film4? Dunno.

So it wont be free for basic NTL cable subscribers?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,066 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They've changed the encryption on NTL Digital (Channel 323) - its now accesible to big basic customers - at the moment only trailers are being run but it looks like it (and its associated +1 channel) will be available to everyone with the big basic package (not sure bout the lite version though).

We'll find out in just over 15 minutes time though...
So it wont be free for basic NTL cable subscribers?

Its never been on NTL analogue in the first place, so I doubt that will change now...

Well, that's what I have and I don't seem to get FilmFour ... at the moment anyway. Anybody else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,797 ✭✭✭sweetie

Well, I'm getting Lost in Translation on it now!

    Happy Days!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,455 ✭✭✭weemcd

Watched Sexy Beast tonight and didn't see the appeal of it at all... a few points that had a nice build of tension, but apart from that it was complete piss.

Internal Affairs was very enjoyable though tbh. What did everyone else think of the first night lineup? Didn't watch lost in translation because it really doesn't look like my cup of tea

Pretty good line up I thought. Lost in Translation is a pretty well loved film (which I hadn't seen since the cinema so enjoyed), Sexy Beast is a cult film (which I hadn't seen but my house mates has been at me to watch for years) and Infernal Affairs will appeal to the Asian lovers. Pretty good way to advertise the type of films that the channel is all about. It made the first six hours of my shift fly by...

    Found this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=51677673

Are you inthe republic of Ireland?? I have been wondering now for quite a while wheather we can get Freeview, Can we?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

No you can't, there's no DTT (Digital terrestrial television) in Ireland, and there's no plans to start any AFAIK. If you are near the border with the north you might get a signal, not likely though, I know some people in the center of London that can't get freeview ( a good signal atleast) unless they have a roof aerial. I'm in London btw.

    John

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

DTT is possible but only to those fortunate enough to get a signal. some people along the border up north and in Wexford can receive it.

a DTT trial in this country is due to happen this year and run for 2 years

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

    Where?

2 years! The BBC are running HD trials for 6 months only, and that an entirely different system!

    DTT works!
