My Betting Diary

Inspired by that thread on Gambling I had a look at my excel count for this year. I was pleasantly surprised to see I'm up on Horse Racing but down on soccer bets. Not really a surprise with the later there, I only had about 4 winning bets during the worls cup. Although my stakes were always small and I was always going for the near impossible value bets. They were just for an interest but they were logged anyway. Looking back though, those fivers and tenners build up...

With the horse racing everyone is different when it comes to choosing their horses. Some follow certains horses and others use systems and ratings. Mine has always been strictly form reading. I spent some time looking at my losers last night and a lot of them were maidens who failed to confirm early promise. (I've backed Dragon Dancer in all of his runs, made a bit back on the derby but still can't believe he hasn't won yet.) Horses like Laureldean Express will pay me off in no time, only beaten in a photo last time he'll almost certainly win over a mile.

So the point of this post is to share the bets that I make (HR), and like MasterK, put them on show for all to see. Like his thread, not all horses are burdened with the same amount of my money so I'll illustrate, with points from 5-20 what bet will be made. Obviously there won't be bets everyday but when there are, you'll know about them. Regardless of what other sites and forums arrive...this thread will stay here.

And I won't be calling them tips. Only dickheads do that. ;)

    Today's bets:

    Lingfield 2:20

    Smokey Oakey

Am I falling into the maiden hole again??!!! Yes. Ran a great debut race and should come on for that. Word is good for it too. The favourite is a false price and won't go off odds on as it is now.

    5pts win.

Ah well. Not the start I wanted. I wasn't expecting to see such a short price favourite and although it did make me think twice earlier, I was always told to never change my mind.

    I really think you're right.

Anyway, I had this horse in my horse checker and after listening to Evan Williams I'm going to have a bet tonight -

    Harry Potter - Worcester - 7:40

Evan talked very frankly about this horse this morning and explained a few things for me...his last run in particular. Anyway, if the horse is willing to race tonight and calms down a little (never truley got over a heavy fall last time) then he'll win. Basically we'll know our fate after the first couple of fences. So...

    BET 2

    HARRY POTTER

    5pts win

    CHESTER - 3:35

    STRIKE UP THE BAND

I've backed this horse countless times but recently when he's been running over 6f he hasn't been enjoying it. A very talented animal things haven't really gone his way recently with bad draws, trouble in running etc. I think he'll really appreciate the drop back to 5 today, Dandy Nicholls territory and the 5-1 and 6-1 currently available represents good value.

    5pts win.

    CHESTER 4:10

    DUROVA

Hit the post last time but in this company she should have her easiest task to date. The only fly in the ointment is Kevin Ryan's 2 year old Miss Capricorn. The market is telling us though that this one is not primed for a big run today so it's best to stick with the fav.

    5pts win

    CURRAGH 5:30

    RAJEH

I think a hell of a lot of a horse called Galatee and this horse finished third behin her earlier in the season. Here's a quote from Kevin Prendergast in one of the stable tours I kept from earlier in the year.
I was quite pleased with his run at Naas when he finished third to Galatee. We will try to win a maiden with him first. He's a nice horse who needs a mile and a half and prefers good ground.

Well he goes 1m2 today but he has nice ground and is a decent form choice to score here.

    5pts win

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,936 ✭✭✭fade2black

Strike Up The Band finishes unplaced. Not to sure what to say here...Adrian Nicholls goes for a gap that gets smaller and smaller and when it looks like he's gonna shoot through and win easy, the door is slammed in his face and he's forced to almost pull up. Decisions have to be made in a split second in sprints...Mr Nicholls made the wrong one.

A very frustrating afternoon. Three horses who seemed to have everything going for them somehow managed to lose. I could wonder about the rides given to all three horses. The last two, the jockey's gave their mounts a lot to do...seemed to be over confident about what they had between their legs...erm...

    Anyway, no more complaints.

    Balance: +7.5pts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,936 ✭✭✭fade2black

    +7.5 pts.

I'm not neglecting this, I just haven't had a bet since the last one.

Today's bet I'll be talking the current early price of 5/2 with PP, if it drifts that's just tough for me.

    Leicester - 2.10-Raucous -

Has a lot of things to overcome...notabley a long absence and a short price favourite but we don't worry too much about prices here. I've been looking out for this horse for a number of reasons and expect a big run today.

    5pts win.

Mr Red Vic. 3:15 Killaraney of course

I've been assured that his last run at Kilbeggan where he pulled up is to be ignored and his win at clonmel is good form in the context of this race.

    2.5ps win (currently 8-1, I've taken that)

nice call Fade, wasnt on either :(
    2 out of 2 v nice

Moss Bawn has a bit of pace but cant jump in a straight line to save his life, if he meets stronger opposition he'll struggle.

They'll just send him right handed next time and that should sort tht problem. He would have won by a lot more today if it wasn't for the jumping out to the right. He'll win more when they send him to a more suitable track.

    Saturday
    Market Rasen
    3:45

    YES SIR

His jumping is getting slightly better with eacg race and although it will have to be for this engagement I just think that he's the stand out horse of the race as a particularly classy sort. I have to admit that when i looked at this race last night before the prices were up I thought he'd definitely be favourite, possibly 2-1. The field is full of decent, progressive horses, but with McCoy on board I think Yes Sir can lead from the front and break all their hearts.

    5pts win.

    Ayr 15:50

    Little Jimbob

Not sure what happened last time out so that made me think a little longer about adding this one today. However, his effort behind Folio the time before that when he led from the front and battled back when headed only to be beaten by a neck, was a good one and a reproduction of that effort would see him go very close today. I've taken the 9-2 currently available with ladbrokes.

    5pts win.

    Ayr 2:15
    Snowflight

I could be falling into another one of my own traps here but I think if Snowflight has learned from his pleasing debut run (behind Champery) he'll take a lot of beating here. He ran green that day and made up a lot of ground at the death. Has the experience of a run now and hopefully that, and his ability will see him through.

    5 pts win.

    1 for tonight.

    Lingfield 8:00

    Eastlands.

As often as I can I will look at a few early market movers and then look back through their video form to see if there's any significant reason for the gamble. This one is very interesting...take a look at the video form highlights for this race and you'll see a horse who really hasn't been raced at all. Slowly away and then trots around for a while. To me it has the makings of a sting in waiting. 25-1 this morning. 7-1 now.

    3.75 points win.

Was going to do Flashy Beau at Leopardstown but decided against it. Has a big chance though.
