    omg:eek:
does he actually bother to get back up or does he just rest for another while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭p.pete

LOL, hope he goes to Chelsea - much better than Gallas in that position.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

quite funny isn't it. supposedly world class full back and the best left full for the past 10 years and thats his efforts of even acknowledging a 30million pound striker...

he's had something wrong for about 8 years, since he scored that banana shot and gave somone the impression he was a decent player.

being brazilian must automatically add 40 grand onto your contract at real

He was always a liability, even in '98

I think that's just a genaral Brazil trait rather than just RC.

They don't seem to have any comprehenion of the idea of choosing a man to cover on set pieces and then sticking with him throughout

I mean even in those pix there is 5 French moving into the 6 yard area and only 3 Brazilians with them. You can't blame RC twice (as much as we would like to) :).

Gabriel Heinze is the best left back in the world.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭vorbis

i thought RC did well overall in this world cup. Shocking defending for that goal but every player has bad moments. Besides this is Brazil, if they lose a match 1 - 0 I'd be looking at the forwards not the defenders! Since when has a brazillian team ever relied on keeping clean sheets.

    We can all play!

[Gary Neville] Manchester United are the very very best team in the whole wide world [/Gary Neville]

    etc.

    zambrotta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

No way, Ashley Cole is without a doubt the best left back in the world, he has the attacking ability of Zambrotta with the defensive ability of Heinze, all combined into one.

    Top top top class player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

He's (zambrotta) the best left full, and the second best right full (Stevie Finnan obviously ;))

I forget if Cole is good or not, its been a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

    steve finnan is right back.

    heinze is probably the best.

Zambrotta for me. I would argue that he has the defensive ability (and more) of Heinze as well.

    Ashley Cole a close 2nd.

To me, Zambrotta is just too attacking to be an incredible full back.

Ashley Cole is the only full back who perfectly combines attacking and defensive duties, and I don't think I've ever seen him get caught out.

Didnt see England against Spain then?Joaquin was taking the piss out of him.He nutmegged him with a backheel!

For me its Zambrotta, defensively excellent and great going forward.Ferreira of Chelsea is also top class when on form.Lahm looks quality too,i think he will be the best in a few years.

Heinze is a great defender but i'm not mad about him going forward,i have been more impressed with him as a centre back tbh.

Tough call between Zambrotta or Cole.

TBH id be more than happy with either!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,434 ✭✭✭cardshark202

I assume people saying ashley cole is the best left back in the world were joking right? Cliche is a much better player.

In this world cup I have been very impressed with grosso.

I agree sorin is a fairly solid left back. i can't decent who's the best, but I do think heinze is excellent.

EDIT: i think zambrotta may be the best right back in the world.

Zambrotta is the best left-back in the world (tm).

Cafu and Ferdinand are pretty good defenders too.

zambrotta is way better Cole, Cole is overrated as is most of the english players

PHB, the subtleties of your irony are too much for this place. They'll all think you actually mean it :D

    Come back Denis Irwin.

Now that's a full back, never mind your Roberto Carlos etc. Did the job the way it is supposed to be done, 100% consistent, no matter who the opposition was, had a great shot on him and scored more than his fair share from free kicks. Imagine how much it'd cost to buy someone like him today?

and Finnan is Irwins long lost brother...both very similar players...no messing

I'm surprised nobody has even mentioned Maldini, even though he is getting on a bit

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 911 ✭✭✭Little-Devil

I would go for one of these 3

    Gabriel Heinze
    Ashley Cole
    Zambrotta

Carlos i think was the best left back in the wolrd about 3 years ago, not so sure now?

Christ I hate the way Frenchies make these stupid pictures with their oh-so-hilarious comments.

With Greece winning the Euros in 04, France winning the WC would be another kick in the face.

    Oh and Cole is dire.

Irwin was 5 times the player Finnan is and will ever be. no way similar! Thats like comparing Jaap Stam (a decent defender) to Paul McGrath (a legend).

Zambrotta gets my vote, Maldini is getting on but he is the best left back I've ever seen, with Denis in a close second.

He was never the best left-back in the world as he was missing one of the key coponents of being a defender , being able to defend . He is just a left winger that plays in a deeper position or what some may call a left wing-back .

I dont know about that. I've seen many games where he played very well defensively too, Making very important tackles when he was needed :) Not saying he was ever the best as up until 3 years ago Maldini was far and away the best left back playing the game, with others taking over since then, but still, Carlos was actually able to defend in his youth

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭el rabitos

irwin? at no time in his life was he ever the best left back in europe. as said, he was good going forward, reliable enough defending, and had a good free kick, but take the blinkers off.

maldini had been untouchable till like 2001/2 and even now he's probably still the best.

cole? best left back? best left back in london maybe. thats about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,890 ✭✭✭✭Nalz

Most reliable consistant footballer Manchester United had between 1991 and 2001, how many trophies were won in that time? Apart from Maldini name at least 2 LB better and more reliable then him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,245 ✭✭✭✭Fanny Cradock

i question RC's defending abilities, but it's very easy to pick ONE monemtary lapse and then judge himm on that. if i was to post a few pictures of some fantastic defending by the likes of richard dunne (or some such tool) would that make him the best defender in the world? in like manner, a mistake doesn't not make RC the best LB in the world. this said i personally don't believe he is, though i feel he is "perfect" for the brazilian system. i just think all this should be taken in the context of what it was: a mistake!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

Roberto Carlos has been rubbish for the last 2 seasons, he lacks pace, and for his experience, he doesn't even have the kind of posisional sense you'd expect.

    pessotto
    lizarazu

just off the top of my head

irwin 5 times the player finnan is? prawn sandwiches gone to the brain?

irwin and finnan are mirror images in terms of being unsung and completely reliable in their positions, neither are world class defenders but good getting forward, the only thing irwins game had over finnan is he was good with a dead ball.

paul mcgrath is easily comparible to jaap stam.

get out of fergies hole, take of the blinkers and cop on

While Paul McGrath is not at the level of Stam, it's a silly idea to suggest he is.
Irwin was the LB at United during their greatest years, and he was one of their best players none stop. He and Finnan are comparably defensivly, but going forward, Finnan is nowhere near the level that Irwin was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,220 ✭✭✭✭Lex Luthor

I should have stated that I am comparing Finnan to Irwin as they are both no nonsense Full backs of similar mould. Finnan doesn't have the dead ball ability Irwin had, but for defensive qualities, to me they are very similar.

i take it the people advocating Heinze for the best left back in the world slot didnt see his performance against Mexico?

Shocker. Gotta love them man u tinted glasses

yep, Irwin top drawer player. More consistent defender, can play at both RB and LB, unlike Finnan who looks uncomfortable at times in his worse position. Irwin alot better at going forward, that goal against Crystal Palace were he skint 2 players and side footed it in the corner (finnan doin that - eh no). Dead ball skills - class. but I havta get my head out of Fergies ass now and again eh elRabito ??

However, please clarify this for me PHB, and apols if Im reading it wrong, but are you saying that Stam was a better centre half than McGrath?

    One bad performance? Bit harsh.

    + he was playing CB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,890 ✭✭✭✭Nalz

Heinze isnt the very best, but he deserves a vote. One bad performance...actually hold on it wasnt that bad a game he wasnt fully fit anyway. Heinze deserves to be up there, but he doesnt get my vote.

Now Evra...theres a class full back (joke!!)

What position does this Daniel Alves play? Im nearly sure its right back? From what i have seen he looks very good and he wont be arriving at anfield to sit on the bench.
