Yeah im just wondering how many of you are going to be dumping your 939 (AMD) setups for AM2/Conroe, and how long will you have them before upgrading? Personally all this news about 939s being kicked to the curb and having to spend a load on upgrading to be able to have a good system is really frustrating me and i feel as i am the only one not happy about it.... The reason i am not happy about this is cause my system is only about 3-4 months old (self built) and am simply not and cannot afford to upgrade so dam soon after i spent 2k on my system!!! I mean my system is going to be obsolete in a few months!!!!! Wont be able to play the newest games (at all), wont be upgradable... i just cant believe it!!!

Don't worry about it being obsolite. Does it do what you want it to do? There always will be new and better models around.

Lol you'll just have to get a new GPU you can keep the rest( as far as i know).

Hehe I just got an S939 mobo, no processor yet. Don't think I'll be changing for a good while though. :)

I have s939. Perfectly happy with it tbh. Not concerned about AM2 and conroe because I expect this system to last me a good while before I need an upgrade on the processor.

Yeah id be mad happy with a socket 939 system. I nearly got a athlon 64 3700+ ,3/4 gig of ram,PCi-e mobo 200gig hdd system of of ebay . It sold for £165!!!!!!!! All i needed was to actually have that much money and that system would have been mine!!! I am so annoyed i dont have the money!!

Lol looking to upgrade from that P3 yeah?

I bought my Socket 939 kit a couple of months ago, my old PC was driving my Krezy, my only regret is that I didn't wait a couple of months for AM2 to get the S939 processor at a big reduction. AMD/retailers have knocked a huge chunk out of S939 kit prices.

Needless to say I'm sticking with S939 for the forseeable future. Might get a dual core processor.

BTW Christophicus, now is a great time to ditch that museum piece in your sig for a S939 build, processors are real cheap now.

I'll be sticking with socket 939 for a good while.. dont see any need to upgrade till vista n DX10 is worth upgrading to.. if ever ;)

Yeah Seanw i would if i could but at the moment I have a grand total of €20 ,And that situation dosnt seem likely to change in the near future. Im pretty much stuck with this old banger.

I've a 939 with an X2 in it clocked to FX60 levels thats only 6 months old. I'm ****ed if i'm upgradin again. It can handle anything - and will be sometime before it starts struggling.

s939 getting kicked to the curb? thats great :D got me an s939board and n 3200 processor... if its getting kicked to the curb, i can get me an x2 44000! for peanuts then :D That will last me a few years.

The rest is memory, sata drive, fx card, etc.. all seperate bits to update... one at a time.

Yeah don't worry chris I know how this feels, people practically throwing away PC's up in dublin every day they're so cheap, then I look for one locally here in Galway and nearly everything in the local paper is some ignorant buffoon advertising a 500mhz machine for 300

    Its a hard life.... :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Haha, yeah, not really though...I've gone through a good few PIIs and PIIIs since then....broke a few, sold a few, etc, but now when I want one for something serious and not fooling around, I simply can't get one anywhere!!

If I had a car I'd nearly drive to dublin for the day collecting tonnes of ****e....:D

939?! im still on socket A !!!

but it still runs stuff grand, though ever since playing oblivian i have noticed that i might have to soon upgrade to am2/conroe and use my good ole pc as a porn server

Plenty of legs left in socket 939, especially the high end stuff .

If you look at the new chips the gains in performance are not worth spending the money on an upgrade.

With a good gfx card, and good x2 got on the cheap. it would keep you ticking over for a year and a half no bother.

I don't know about you but I can barely manage a bag on the confines of a bus let alone a computer case! :D

I only got my 939 system a month ago not goint to change it now. Was cheap to start with but my motherboard is great. It can take AGP, PCI-E so i did not upgrade my video card. It also has a expansion slot where i can fit an AM2 chip to it. Dont know how it works but would have to buy some extra bits and an AM2 chip will work for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,111 ✭✭✭tba

Man I still have a P4 1.5 If I get a s939 it will still be with me in five years, I mean come on!

On another note, rampant hardware purchase contributes to lazy, non scalable software which is bad m'kay.

I sticking with my S939, i may upgrade the GFX card as its only a 6600GT.
Maybe ill upgrade the mobo to x16 as its still an AGP, and get a new card.

NEVER underestimate what you can fit on a bus.
Pay attention to right had side of pic(Ignoring sleeping guy) Thats 4 full PC's, 3 monitors, guitars, amps. Rucksacks etc etc.

Ya can get a LOT onto a bus ;)

What gains in perfomance? The higher latency of DDR2 RAM seems to make AM2s slower than Socket 939s, unless you're spending like €500+ on the CPU alone. So you won't really gain anything right now with an AM2 (unless you have crazy money) - but you do have the option of upgrading to some kick-ass processors in the future without having to get a new mobo and RAM.

As for me, I'm currently also stuck in Socket 370 Land (the PCs I use at work are better!) - I really want to get a new PC, and I have the money, but I also want to get a car, and I dunno if I'll have enough for both (oh, the joys of paying motor insurance for a 20-year-old  ), but if I was I'd get an AM2 purely because it's a lot more future-proof.

I know the Conroe's just around the corner, but I can see it being a rip-off and hopefully AMD's prices will get a lot more competitive (like the good ol days).

Well there is the odd situation where the extra bandwidth of the ddr2 makes about a 5% difference!:D

I was thinking more along the lines of the conroe chips bench marked so far

i.e. Nice performance but not really worth upgrading to just yet if you have a dacent A64 system.
(A year or so is a different story)

Conroe is a nice option for P4 owners on compatible socket 775 boards, but again the performance difference is not really worth it just yet.
(unless the heat is a big deal)
I know the Conroe's just around the corner, but I can see it being a rip-off and hopefully AMD's prices will get a lot more competitive (like the good ol days).

There will be a good price war hopefully :D.

But as seeing AMD/Intels answer to new CPUs seems to be adding more cores, before we even have the software to support it properly, I doubt the jump in performance over the good single core chips out at the moment will be a huge leap.
(certainly not worth breaking your balls over anyhow;))

I will be hanging on the my trusty 3500+ for the next year to year +1/2.

    Will be fine for games.

Alright can i just ask a question that wasnt noticed a page back. Can 939 rig run DX10 if of course your using a dx10 capable graphics card? If this is true it will make everything so much easier (and cheaper) for me cause then all i will have to do is buy a new dx10 graphics card and windows vista in next year and im set!? I might also get a second 7800GTX now but im not sure yet..

Yeah but the difference is I have to actually use this piece of crap everyday at work! Funny enough, its running fine, and runs better then some of the P3's in our office - but still, its the worst computer spec wise in the entire building I'd say. The person next to me has a Pentium 4 though.....

There are loads of old computers in this office actually that aren't even being used and here is me trying desperately to get a hold of one - there is another model the same as this that's been on the floor for years, gathering dust without even so much as been breathed on since its been put there about 20 months ago. Can I have it? No, we....might need it.

    Yeah, right.....
