Complaints about threads

I'm relatively new to this site. I can see how I might complain to a "moderator" about the content of a particular post but is there a way that I can contact someone who oversees the site and its use?

In particular I've been looking into a thread under "spirituality" and it is shocking to think that a vulnerable person or a child could "stumble" into it.

What about it is the problem?

I can see nothing in it anymore damaging than many other forums on Boards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

Jackie laughlin I have already asked you to speak to me about what it is you have an issue with.
There is a chain of command here at boards and it goes forum moderator, super moderator and then the site owners who are the admin.
You have issue with one of the threads in one of the forums that I moderate what are your concerns ?

Why is that I can reply to some posts and not to others? I'm obviously new here but I want to join in a chat about the match last nite and it says I don't have sufiicient priviledges. What the **** is all that about?

You need to get an access request for soccer. Have a read here and it will tell you why.

Use the report post button if you think the content of a thread is questionable:report.gif

And until you post your concerns for the users of the spirituality forum to see, none of us know why you are objecting. The forum is a place we find very positive and safe, its non religious, no one tries to force their views on anyone else. I cannot understand what you find to object to. There are far more offensive posts in AH any day of the week.

I think she isn't reporting it to you Thaedydal because she wants the whole forum shut down.

Jackie is there something in particular? From what I have read there is nothing there that frighting or would hurt a child. Heck 5 seconds in google will get you worse (as would watching the news).

Thaedydal (whatever that means!!) why don't you clear off to another thread if you are not going to answer a simple question.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,314 ✭✭✭Talliesin

OP. Come back when you've PM'd a mod, or reported a post on the thread, adding the comment that other posts in the same thread have the same issue AND then left it a reasonable length of time for a mod to deal with this and still haven't had anything.

byrnep. What on earth does that have to do with the topic in this thread? Why exactly do you need to add "What the **** is all that about?" when you haven't even explained just what it is you are trying to do yet?

Have a bit more cop-on and manners and you might even get an answer to your questions before you get banned.

    Ah, I see.

Of course if we disallowed forums due to the prejudices of every random weirdo what would we have left?

All of the religious forums would be shut down.

    All of the arts forums.

Games would be gone pretty quickly.

The rest would take a while to fall, but they'd all be gone soon enough.

is there somethign hidden in that thread thats meant to explain everything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

The comments by JL have been removed. The OP here thought it was irresponsible to have a thread suggesting the people posting about the possiblity of psychic and such being would be damaging if kids or gullable people found it.

Thaed removed all the comments to "bring it back on topic". It would have been nice to see what the problem was alright, though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

This was the posting what was previously linked to it was removed from the thread as it was off topic.
I may have unintentionally started a thread under "feedback" by asking if anyone knew of a method for submitting overall rather than particular complaints.

I would not like a child, a person experiencing some sort of crisis or a naive, credulous individual to be exposed to people who believe in psychic powers, astrology, paranormal activity, etc. etc.

I've avoided the use of inverted commas above in case I offend believers.

In a bit of a departure from every other post I've made on feedback, I'll address the actual issue here. On the spirituality forum we don't and would not encourage anyone to believe anything or discourage anyone from their current beliefs. We don't try, or even want, to convert anyone. If we did I'm fairly sure the forum would dissapear in the blinking of an admin's eye. It's simply a place for people to discuss their beliefs with others who may or may not share them (some of the best posters on the forum have actually been atheists and agnostics who certainly wouldn't believe any of the more 'out there' ideas.)

If I felt at any stage that some user of the forum was merely turning towards it out of some weakness, vulnerability or mental illness, I would strongly suggest that they seek professional help, and even consider banning them from the forum for their own sake. And if I ever had any indication that someone on the forum was trying to take advantage of someone who was vulnerable in some way I would instantly ban them from the forum, push for a site-wide ban which I would almost certainly get, and most likely arrange for a 'quiet word' with them in real life. (I'm sure any of the other mods would do likewise)

As for children being exposed to the forum, I personally believe that it's up to parents to decide what their children should or should not be exposed to over the internet (and in real life for that matter). The choice is and should be theirs to make, it should not be made for them by one person or group of people who think they know what's best for everyone's chlidren.

Besides, if the ideas these children 'should' have are so inherently right and correct, then surely they can withstand some exposure to ideas which are clearly false and wrong.

Knowledge can be a dangerous thing.
On both the paganism forum and the spirituality for and to some extent the
parrots normal forum you get people asking about " how to......" or " has anyone ever...... and tell me how"

There are plenty of sites and books out there with information from the very simple use of crystals to how to make a flying oinment from the fat of an unbaptised child.

What information is allowed and diseminated on the forums which I mod is watched carefully.
There are plenty of ways for people to learn how to do daft things out there and boards.ie doesn't need to be one of them.

For the most part those who ask these types of questions are seeking and have made up thier mind to find out or to try such things.

If I think it is unwise I will say so and try disuade them, if they are detemind they will find the info somehow and that is part of thier developement let them
move on and make thier won mistakes and learn from them.

Keeping an eye on such matters is the reason I agreed to mod the Spiritualiy forum in the first place.

Based on the OPs other posts on the forum it is quite clear that anything that doesn't agree to what they like should be banned/censored.

I wouldn't take it to heart.

    or a naive, credulous individual

If it was up to me, threads would have random posts detailing how to make home made ingestible bombs thus dealing once and for all with the "but what if a stupid person should read this?" problem.

See all that post does it make it look like you were too cheap to pay for an abortion after you started pimping out yore Ma/girlfriend/sister.

I know Stark but they have more stupid people in thier family who would sue,
and while little johnny blowing out his stomach and bowels is more phyiscally provible then Little johnny using the key of solomon to summon deamons or at least trying to and his mind snapping and he ends up in St. Pats posting how to do so could still be seen as a contributing factor.

Lest we forget, that there are as many people on the left hand side of the I.Q. curve as there are on the right, so stupid people will always read these things; the best we can hope for is that they don’t understand them.

Vis-a-vi the naive and gullible; one leap of faith is much like another in this regard, and so to target the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster for censorship would be unfair without doing the same for Christianity or Islam. Of course, the question is thornier when we begin to consider all the cults and scams out there that feed upon people, but to police those we would have to be both qualified and balanced enough to do so - and I don’t think anyone here is.

So really readers, regardless of age, should at best be told to caveat emptor, if no law is being broken, and nothing more. It’s not our job to police the idiocy of those who nominally share our genome and if they want to go off and give away all their money to a commune, strap a bomb to themselves, flagellate their sins away or hold hands in a forest reciting 30-year-old ancient rituals, then that’s up to them.

    Think of it as Darwinism.

Twas the common method employeed by the doxies that worked thier trade near the gin mills and any other unfortunates.
The gin was used to relax and dull the pain and if you were lucky to sterilise the wire.
The history of abortion is an intresting read.

Wicca was first publicised in 1954, so it is at least over 60 years old :)

Yes and no. While stupid people will do stupid things
as mods we have to watch for things which maybe harmfull and actionible as a result against the site
and try and promote best practice across the board as in safer sex,
go to the dr, don't replace the fuse boards yourself get an electrican,
if your not competant enough to home build a pc get some one who can.
Don't try run a marathon with out training,
don't get drunk and goto a 'huanted' house and use a ouija board,
or try a voodoo ritual and drink an obsene amount of rum and fire walk
or don't do kickboxing with out stretching first,
or try a native amerian tribal rite and eat a hand full of peyote.
