I am considering holding an event similar to SwapFest which is held by MIT in america, it would be a car boot sale sort of event, on the last saturday of every month, it would only be for radio/electronic/computer equipment and you could buy/sell/swap stuff. seller fees would be 10 euro for the day and it would be 2 euro to enter. it would be in the dublin area probably in a car park or industrial estate.

i just want to know how many people would be interested, and at what level, if i get 25 sellers with at least 20 pieces of equipment each then i will arrange it for the last saturday in july onwards

Would you attend, and if so at what level 52 votes

    I wouldnt go
    0% 0 votes
    I would come to sell
    9% 5 votes
    i would come to buy/swap
    1% 1 vote
i would come to sell and buy/swap
    88% 46 votes

i have a small industrial unit in blanchardstown, which is pretty easy to get to, i can provide mains electricity for peole demoing stuff and free boradband for testing purposes each user to hava a 50mb cap sorta thing. with the industrial unit those who dont have a car to put stuff in can go inside the building. i could also get "chuck wagon" food vendors etc... to come along

one problem, i have to get the rest of the people in te estate to agree, only a few are there on saturdays so it wouldnt be much of a problem i think, but there might be a little niggle with one or two of them, but we can avoid there premesis anyway

Yup same here. I had to crush (Yes CRUSH) 20 Dell laptops all less than 6months old. Cause the company had changed PC suppliers.

Any chance this thread could be stickied for the duration? The previous thread I linked to above got over 100 posts, but it is now stickied in the Old FS General and displays only one page. By stickying this new thread, it would draw much more sellers/buyers.

i hate that having to destroy things, me and a few others are paid to destroy compter equipment, as wel as supply new items, i sold company 4x 20gb SATA ard disks 3 weeks ago, tok them back yesterday and was ordered to hit the wth a hammer wile hey were gong o destroy them, what a waste.

under WEEE regulations you are not allowed destroy anything wih an LCD screen because of the mercury in the backlight tube, so i reccomend telling people that if your asked to destroy laptops, then say you will "recycle" them an just smash up the hard disks

Crap, this thread sort of slipped my mind.

Seems like StephenC_IRL has the location problem solved though. I'll move the original thread to Adverts Support for better accessibility.

Where are we on this, is the swapfest going ahead for real at the end of the month. I'd defo go. Blanch isn't the hardest to get to. Where is this industrial unit anyway. Is it on the left as you are heading out of blanch towards Cappa & Finglas, just after the turn to the national aquatics center?

Once it's on a bus route served from the city centre, I'll pop along with a backpack of hard drives! I'd like to see a scumbag steal that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I'd come along as a seller anyway.

I have a good bit of tech that I could do with getting rid of, but what about stuff like DVDS and Console games? Can they be sold at this event?

Yup, the original concept was that being boards it would be a primarily computer-stuff affair, but I think people should be encouraged that people bring all kinds of stuff.

Stuck until this happens. I'll be there. :) (as a buyer....I don't have that much crap to sell).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,282 ✭✭✭BlackWizard

Oh I forgot to mention that I'll be there as a buyer. Although I do have to sell my PC but Ill more than likely be doing that over on adverts.ie .

swapfest is going to go ahead, if we can get sellers, everyone who will come as a seller i need you to PM or email me "imes dot stephen at gmail dot com" (edited by khannie to prevent bots spamming you) with your name, email, phone number, address, roughly how many items you have to sell.

you must not sell white goods (fridges, freezers, dishwashers etc...) and you must be available last saturday of july, the seller fee is €15

does anybody know how much a hotel function room costs, it will have to be large, very large, or even a GAA hall would do. it has to be easy to get to and less than 400 euro, we need it 9am - 2pm last saturday in july

If you read through the other thread you'll see I got prices for the North Star Hotel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

    PM sent re selling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 shanedevane

yo, on this, I've called around the best part of 15-20 hotels within dublin.

Out of the ones I checked out myself, the north star was the biggest (for the most reasonable).

here are the pics of the north star that I took when I popped into see them:
    http://www.shanedevane.com/nsh/DSC09277.JPG
    http://www.shanedevane.com/nsh/DSC09278.JPG
    http://www.shanedevane.com/nsh/DSC09276.JPG

they quoted me, 350 for a full day and 250 for half, but they were cool about it. so I'm sure you could cut them down more.

Thing is of course, that's not exactly GAA size, but from the pics you'll get an idea of whether it's worth it or not.

the morrisson hotel has a bigger room, but quoted, 850 for half a day. which was nice of them.

The only other bad boy, which was my very first choice, was within trinity college, they have a quote on their web site of 600 bills for one of the event rooms. With trinity though, they don't book out their events rooms after 28th of september ie. when everyone goes back to college etc. as they wouldn't let me book after that.

I'd love to go to sell & buy, just couple question how easy via public transport is the industrial estate?

Anychance of boards orangising a transport or a carpool system for people with heavier items?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 438 ✭✭StephenC_IRL

thanks, i might use the north star, do you have the room size ? also i think i may be getting access to a big car park

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 438 ✭✭StephenC_IRL

the industrial estate thing is out, i am talking to a guy and i might be getting a car park that is near a bus stop, people can organise carpool by themselves, if somebody gets me bus prices i might organise one if enough people need it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭Revalco

A car park near a bus stop, makes things a dam site easier :)

Carpool was mainly if the event was hosted in a remote location or not as easy to access via public transport.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 438 ✭✭StephenC_IRL

because we want people to come its going to be somewhere easy to get to, and public transport is a must, if its not near a train/bus stop i will get a bus to pick sellers up from a bus/train stop

    done deal people:
    http://www.iecf.ie/ComputerFairBloomsHotel

    Next Computer Fair
    Blooms Hotel,
    Anglesea Street,
    Temple Bar,
    Dublin 2.

    Date: Saturday, August 12th
    Time: 12.00pm - 5.00pm TBC

As you can imagine, I've a real rush now to get vendors interested and signed up.

To make the fair more enjoyable and interesting, there will be a handful of stalls that aren't vendors. In particular a Linux stall (which will be distributing Linux Distros on CD etc. - for a small fee of course), and a Games Stall, which we will setup, currently talking to Unreal.ie crowd and a few more stalls that aren't direct vendors sellings their products. So all in all, hopefully, we'll have an interesting fair for everyone.

Vendors wise though, I need support from people. So if you have items to sell and can make it out on August 12th, get in touch. The floor plan for the event will be up this weekend and I'll be doing everything possible to make setting things up. We will have a handful helpers on the day too.

    shane@iecf.ie

You guys should see our buy and sell adverts running over the next week and also the typical FreelanceIreland.ie newsletter - there will be other advertising going on too, but if you can think of anything that might work, let me know.

    Thanks, Laters

So If I want to drop 3 items off at stall to be sold I'll have to be there at 12 and then 5 to pick cash/items if not sold?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Ok... even though this thread is about interest in a swapfest carboot sale being run by StephenC_Irl, my thread has been closed and i've been directed here to post my question about a Computer Fair being run by shanedevane??? Am I missing something irlrobins or are these not 2 seperate events?

Anyway... what I said in the other thread.

Who'll be going to this fair this weekend in Blooms Hotel. I'm going to give it a show and try to sell some old junk. Convenient that it coincides with the Boards Beers outing as well, whatever money I make will be kindly donated to good ol Messrs Maguire. Might pop in and see one of those free movies in the square as well, I think a beautiful mind is on on Sat.

Will you's be just browsing or can I hope to buy some deals off yous at it (any cheap dual cores for sale? )
