i'm thinking of changing gym when my membership expires. my current gym is alright for cardio but the weights section is pretty limited. its not a big gym by any means, so if you go at the wrong time you spend most of the time waiting around for people to finish. lately, i've been getting a bit pissed off with the lack of equipment and the amount of kids & 16 year olds running amok.

i'm thinking of joining jackie skellys in greystones or loughlinstown gym. i'm looking for opinions from members of either gym.

what are both gyms like equipment wise, are there many squat racks, smith machines, free weights, treadmills etc?

i've heard jackie skellys is essentially peak time all day, or is that just hearsay? how about loughlinstown? is there much waiting around for equipment?

what are the prices and opening hours like?

and finally, are either overrun with kids and teenagers?

    thanks

Hey there, iv been to both gyms but firstly ill give you a low down on both then give my final thought.

    Jackie Skellies
    i) Has loads of threadmills, rowing machine, cross trainers etc. Has alot of cardio machines.
ii) Weights are limited to mainly machine weights but have every single machine weight, they have no squat racks - only smiths, no free bench, one EZ curl bar ( rest of the bars have weights already attached so you cant adjust them ) Dumbells go up to 40kg, no dipping/chinning station and they have one(but good) cable machine.
iii) Usually busy and full of teenagers and some kids.
iv) The water to drink in there tastes like dirt.
    v) Has a swimming pool ( but the whole pool is the same depth )
vi) Seems expensive to join, about 70 euro monthly.

    Loughlinstown
    i) Has decent amount of cardio machines with televisions.
ii) Has A very good mixture of both free, machine and cable weights, has free benches and also has a squat rack and a dipping station. Dumbells go up to around 55kg (if memory serves me correctly).
iii) havent been there in a while so cant give a good idea of what peak times are like
    v) Wouldnt have alot of teenagers as much as jackie skellies, more serious lifters in here.
    vi) no swimming pool
vii) costs around 50 euro a month but around 4 euro per session

So thats the general low down on both gyms but in my honest opinion your better off going to Loughlinstown. If your serious into lifting and gaining mass etc its the place to be, Jak from boards is a member there and as he said " This gym breeds good lifters ". Jackie skellies is more like a leisure center and iv been there twice, once for being curious and the second for convenience (sp?) sakes and both times i was disapointed in my workouts. Jackie skellies seems fine if you want to lose weight and get fit but if you wanted to put on serious mass or strength its the last place id go to.

Hope that solved any problems you may have had.

    Ciao and good luck.

    michael, thanks for the info.

jackie skellies sounds a lot like my current gym, and all the things that piss me off about it.

i'll try check the two of them out before my membership expires and decide then.

    thanks again
