Training Partners

    Ok, just a quick question:

Who here either trains on their own or with someone else when in the gym or running etc?

Before now I just went by myself, did my sets, went for my run and went home. Now a friend of mine has started lifting and goes to the gym same time as myself. We're the same build/weight and have pretty much the same goals, so it's easy to help each other. It definetly helps.

Or does anyone here find it's better working on your own?

I do the loner thing I prefer the in and out thing - i'd be afeared that with mate there wold be messing.

one friend wanted to get into it and i thought he'd be a good partner but then he started talking about taking steroids - before I had even lifted a weight in anger so i ditched him prompto

I used to go to the gym alone but my girlfriend has started accompanying me, for both weights and cardio, it makes it easier no end, and we're both fairly interested in doing what we're there to do, so we get the stuff done with minimal gossip and messing.

I don't mind doing weights alone but I find cardio on my lonesome beyond boring, even with music.

On my own. I can see the benefits of having a partner. But they would have to be as dedicated as me.

I see gorups of lads in there and the whole time at the bench press and chat. Why even bother going?

When I wanted to lose the weight and get fit, I was determined not to spend big money on it. So I don't go to the gym.
    Instead, I walk.
A neighbor friend showed an interest, and we set a time every day to walk for 1 hour. We started at 2 miles an hour and are up to 4.5 miles in an hour. Although it is just too hot to walk that far right now. I LOVE walking in winter, especially while it is snowing!!!!

I lost over 3 stone just walking daily and cutting down servings, making healthier food choices. Walking Buddy's results? Did not modify diet and hasn't lost a pound!

Having a walking buddy really helped, though. Some days I just did not feel like it but didn't want to let my buddy down, so I'd go any way.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from with that problem, but you'll have that in most gyms.
It helps, when you're getting annoyed with an exercise and going at it half-a$$ed, to have someone making you finish your reps/sets.

The only downside I can see is that the session can take longer if one of you is getting tired easily or taking long breaks in between sets etc etc.

I like going to the gym on my own, although I do miss the spotter on some exercises like the squat etc.
I like the whole alone with ones thoughts idea! When Im training for my other 'hobbies' there are always plenty of partners! :)

Started off with a mate who I thought was serious...then he stopped going and I kept going and now I prefer going on my own because I do everything I want to do and minimise the chit chat.

I go on my own, I enjoy it.

But if I had a partner, I'd be better and barbell chest presses.

Depends on what I'm doing, running always me and my mp3 find it better that way. I do alot of ma, and outside of class perfer if I have someone with me to give me that extra push with bag work ect.

I train on my own which is a pity coz i could do with a training partner especially for bench pressing, its very hard to go the extra yard without soembody to push you.Having said that a lot of the partnerships i see in the gym are like gossiping fishwives, languidly posing and taking up every bit of equipment in the place.

Got to agree with Dave on this one, I go by myself, and enjoy it. I tend to end up doing alot of thinking / problem solving without getting disturbed by anyone else. (Very deep or what!!). I'll often have a joke or a quick comment with someone else who is there.

I think I'd get competitive (not in healthy way) if I had a training buddy.

I also hate the people tend to hog machine's when in a group, if you want to brag about who you scored on Saturday night, fine; but don't do it when other people are waiting to actually use a machine!!!

I prefer to go to the gym on my own. Recently I've been going running outdoors with a friend and while the time passes much quicker, we always end up chatting and it's quite distracting. I'm thinking of asking her if we should just wear our iPods in future.

I train on my own and i much prefer it, having a partner however does have its benefits, especially if your into heavy lifting with the bench and squat. Most exericses, if your doing bodybuilding techniques mostly you dont require a partner but i now myself am feeling coming to a plateu with my bench cause im afraid i cant lift any more heavier since i dont have a partner. If you were a powerlifter, partners are essential. Bodybuilding it's not a necessity unless you want to get some heavy lifting done, and as others have said it can be a distraction unless the person has the same goals as yourself and takes training as seriously as you. its good to hear ThatGuy that you have a partner who takes it as seriously as yourself.

i go by myself. none of my mates have any interest in being in any way fit or healthy, they're just lazy. i dont think any of my female friends would go near the weights with me anyway.
its pretty annoying cause i've recently rediscovered my interest in sports and fitness and no one i know shares it, so i've no one to talk to about it.
i'd prob just getting pissed off with them faffing around in the gym if they did come anyway. i can imagine them being the kind of people that would sit around on machines/benchs chatting
