Yet more RTE idiocy... Veronica Mars gets an airing...

Those not-so-smart schedulers at RTE have decided to put Veronica Mars on weekdays, from Monday 10th July at 2.30pm. If everyone who was bothered hadn't already caught it elsewhere by now, it might be something of a coup.

OK, so there's a bunch of off-school teenagers off at the time, so you could argue that there is at least some of its audience around at the time, but it's hardly ideal scheduling. Let's see - the show's pilot features a teenager's murder, a drugged rape and that's just for starters in unsuitable daytime content.

So either the show gets cut for content, or goes out in its entirety. Complaints either way.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why this isn't schedule on the *youth* channel, RTE TWO, at 7pm on one or several weeknights, maybe in place of the endless repeats of Friends. Probably should be grateful it wasn't being burned off in the middle of the night like half of the other imports RTE buys...

    thats unbelievable.
now i can only tell my unemployed friends to watch it. whats it gonna replace? 7th heaven?
It does have some dodgy content for that time of day, but RTE does kinda show those programs anyway.

They're tits. all they have to do is giving it an evening spot, a bit of advertisement aimed at the OC crowd and boom you have an audience. more of an audience than ya would at half 2 on a weekday anyway...

I honestly do not understand how you could pay money for something and then just dump it where it will have no effect. Its a great show, better than Onre Tree Hill or the OC which have good audiences. It could easily have gotten some good viewing figures if it was put on RTE 2 at a decent time slot.

Does anyone know if RTE will be showing it from the start? I tried to watch it on Living, but they were only repeating season 2!

They were actually repeating season 1 because we're only about 4 (brand new!) episodes into season 2 at the moment!
BTW I would definitely recommend this show. It's excellent and much better than the 'teen' dramas. In fact I think it's an insult to label it as one!

i lent my sister both seasons on dvd. she watched all 44 episodes in under 2 weeks. as well as watching her usual dose of angel!
it's a great show. RTE are spas. well...half spas. at least they got the show...

A long time on them we could depend, but they haven't thought of viewers lately at all...

Come on RTE, put it on put it on at a suitable time.....

Seriously, do they even look at what they've bought? Or do they see "hey there's a teenager in this investigating crime - must be for kids! It sounds so silly! Let's put it on in the afternoon after Bosco!" I honestly can't fathom the idiocy of their scheduling. Moron can be derived from Montrose - coincidence or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,058 ✭✭✭Unearthly

    Fantastic program, very odd timing.

Perhaps they looked at the ratings in the US where they have not been good at all and are just testing it before they replace it with the safe option of Friends.

Can't see it taking off though

That is a joke. Whoever is responsible for scheduling should be shot. God forbid they try and promote a new show, build an audience and perhaps have a new hit? They have absolutely no idea anymore, I mean isn't this the Murder She Wrote timeslot??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭Smurfpiss

whats the bets that somebody's granny is gonna ask you if you watch that veronica one on the telly.
she likes to watch it with her knitting before countdown starts...
way to hit the target audience.

Perhaps we should all send a few emails with our concerns to rte and try get the message across that this is a bad idea?

I mean, I realise just posting our witty insults and derogatory comments is fun too but there is a small chance we could actually do something about this :o

    ixoy wrote:

Their problem is buying up too much - too much product, not enough timeslots. (And then there's the fear Unearthly is talking about - concern that while endless Simpsons and Friends repeats bring in guaranteed audiences, a new show like VM might do only half or quarter of that amount.)

While daytime for the duration of the summer on RTE ONE has been quite strong imports-wise - ER repeats, Ghost Whisperer, even 7th Heaven is good for a laugh, but at least you could see how those series would appeal to the average daytime audience - the retired, mothers, certainly a vast majority over 40.

Why, then, would a strong show which has huge potential for the target RTE TWO audience, get thrown to the 'oldies' where it will never be seen by those who would appreciate it most? If TG4 can get 100,000+ viewers for The OC, then word of mouth from the same group would guarantee VM a decent rating return. Not alone the teens, but the show has proven really popular with 20-somethings too.

RTE might deserve credit for buying it at all, but we can't really be surprised. They have a habit of hoovering up any shows that have any chance of success lest TV3 or TG4 get their hands on 'em. The only shame is 90% of RTE series never get the scheduling they deserve.

Way-too-deep-voiced voiceover guy announced it after 7th Heaven again today, so I'd say it's too late by now. Still, even sending RTE this thread
might at least show them we're smarter than they usually/always give us credit for TV-wise.

I was actually looking forward to this show. I missed the start of its run on digital so i waited until one of the irish channels started showing it.

Obviously, this is no longer possible as i actually have a job and won't be around during the day to watch. From what i've heard this isn't exactly the type of show thats suitable for a day time audience? Unless they plan on editing it down of course.

    Ditto...

except for the job part ;)

I would rather RTE buy and show stuff regardless of the timeslot than not show it at all. Some of the best stuff is on either during the day or during the night. Not everybody has sky. I just video whatever is on at whatever time. There are some cracking comedies that are shown on rte at all sorts of times.

Gilmore girls is on at 8.00am: It's a brilliant show. Why should I complain when I can still watch it? I'm just glad it's on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 150 ✭✭ScruffySlayer

Who can I get in contact with about this? I remember someone on here saying they'd got King of Queens bumped up to a decent time slot through e-mails and seeing as how this show is ten hundred times better I thought it might be worth all the VM fans here e-mailing in the show's defence. This is possibly the biggest waste of a show RTE have done. Yes even more then Gilmore Girls and Alias.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

I haven't seen Veronica Mars but i've heard good things however its typical of RTE schedulers. I think RTE schedulers are the problem not the guys who buy in the shows. They're in two completely different departments, don't ever talk to each and probably wouldn't know each other if they bumped into each other in the Montrose halls. The import guys are IMO doing great work, they usually get stuff before the english channels but the schedulers stuff it up. Below is a list of programmes that have either not got the proper timeslots, only given a short time in one or have being continuosally moved around:
West Wing, 24, Alias, Six Feet Under, Gilmore Girls, The Wire, Sopranos (early on anyway), CSI, CSI:NY ... I could go on
Would the Gilmore Girls and VM not fill in one of the timeslots currently occupied by two hours of nature programmes? Was it necessary to flit West Wing around before sticking halfway in the graveyard shift (11.15pm)?:confused:
i'm getting hungry from all this ranting so i'll stop but if ever get those RTE schedulers i'll tear them a new one

God I remember TV3's airing of Season 3 of Buffy - they aired from about episode 9 till the end of the season and then showed 1-8. They're better nowadays but this fatal error stays with me!

    Hi, first post here!

I can't understand why RTE decided to show Veronica Mars at 2.30pm? What is replacing The Soprano's? Surely a bit of shuffling on Thursday could of led to the perfect time slot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,107 ✭✭✭John R

Anyone know if they are editing them for the afternoon slot?

Pilot ep on RTE was 38min 20sec long.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭Flamingfud

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I love the RTE schedulers. They have this uncanny knack of getting things just about spot-on for my specific needs, which are probably about as unaverage as you can get. Working from five p.m to midnight every day pretty much eliminates primetime from my life. So what do RTE do? They put one of the best shows of recent years, Veronica Mars, right in the middle of the afternoon. Not to mention, JFK in the wee hours of the morning on a Monday night, the perfect after-work mind melt. All we need to do now is convince them to buy Firefly and Seinfeld, and stick them on RTE 1 around eleven in the morning, and my own personal version of television heaven would be achieved.

Sucks to you nine to fivers. You might have all the disposable income, and the ability to sleep more than four hours a night, but I get Veronica Mars!

I really want to know this, the pilot alone had rape and murder in it. Lilly's body can look pretty gross when they show it sometimes.
Seriously, I think the schedulers just looked at the show describtion and thought it was Nancy Drew and stuck it on in the daytime. There's lots more violence, murder, rape, suicides and other crimes in the show!
Watching todays episodes now and VM just made a joke about auto-eroticism. It's great!

By the way, the best episode is on tomorrow where she dresses up to go the the gaming club and there's implied lesbianism in another bit.

Did you think that perhaps the RTE website might be the place to go to find out?

Champions League football was on and a live GAA programme is on shortly so CSI was dropped.

it was advertised as being on at the weekend, but it just wasn't on tonight. champions league game was on instead.

That was pretty frickin sexy actually.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone know if the scheduled 'Rescue Me' at 23:50 tonight is the new series? I'd be amazed if it was, but few things surprise me with RTE anymore.

    Nope... it's Series 2.
    Rescue Me (Drama)
    Voicemail. Series 2, episode 1.
Exiled to a quiet Staten Island firehouse as a result of his responsibility for Franco's injuries, Tommy looks for a way back to 62 Truck.
    Director: Jace Alexander
Starring: Denis Leary, Mike Lombardi, James McCaffrey, Jack McGee, Steven Pasquale, Andrea Roth, John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata, Diane Farr
    (3 Star)

Yes...Kristin or is it Kirstin? Bell is amazing hot, even when she wears her hair in pigtails :D

As for CSI...Miami is scheduled for next week,so perhaps they will show the last few eps before showing NY. Speaking of NY,season 2 part 1 is out on dvd tomorrow or monday, even before RTE have started showing it. Probably because it was on 5.

Bloody Hell. My sister mentioned to me yesterday that she saw Veronica Mars on RTE at some weird time in the afternoon, and sure enough I take a look today and it is! Beautiful! I applaud RTE for picking up such a critically acclaimed (and tragically unwatched...please advertise it, CW, since UPN wouldn't!) show. But to put it on at such an idiotic time seems to defeat the purpose of airing it at all. It's a show that deals with fairly mature themes and subject matters (as mentioned in the OP, even from the pilot episode), and it is really aimed at an audience of 18-20 and up.

I was lucky enough to get the R1 DVDs of Season 1 when they were released last year, and caught up in time to watch Season 2 as it aired in the US. I'm really looking forward to Season 3 starting up now that it's confirmed that The CW are picking it up, and I've been promoting the excellence of it to everyone I know (screw Lost, VM is where it's at). I guess now I'll have to get everyone I know to quit their jobs/college so they can watch it on RTE.

It still amazes me that they dont put the show on at 7Pm anyday after Home & Away as that has a mainly young adult audience.

And yet RTE have no problem showing repeat friends and a seemingly endless supply of nature documentarys from 7-9 most evenings.

I can't imagine what it must be like at 2pm, the would need to edit the heart out of it. I was really disappointed by the 2nd season, but the first was magnificent and really not suitable for a 2pm showing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

I'm watching now for the first time (as i'm bum and nothing better for doing) and as far as i can see there are no cuts. Curses and sexual references are left in anyway what else would they cut out? This is RTE we're talking about here people the probably haven't watched it let alone go to the bother of editing it. They show unedited ERs (which i would consider an adult programme) directly after VM and despite saying today that some scenes might make people squemish they went ahead and showed it anyway.

Sorry have you some kind of problem with bored housewives.....:D Well I am a housewife, not bored at all, and have no intention of complaining VM.

I watched it last week and it was alright. Its a teenagers show imho, a bit like Charmed. The target audience is young teens to mid 20s. Only watched one episode so might be totally wrong.

I really don't think so, and the comparasin to Charmed is just...oh dear. While on the surface it looks like a run-of-the-mill high school drama for teenagers, I think you may find it really surprises you.
