    Article in Indo today
A FAT-BUSTING drug that not only reduces bodyweight by up to 10pc, but also helps to tackle other health risks such as diabetes and even smoking, has been introduced in Britain.

Rimonabant, also known as Acomplia, is the first drug to target a natural body system that governs a host of factors controlling appetite, weight, metabolism and energy use.

Research suggests that it also has the capacity to combat a smoker's craving for nicotine.

Britain is the first country to receive rimonabant, after the decision by drug regulators last week to grant it a licence throughout the European Union.

Experts say that potentially 20pc of Britain's population could be eligible for treatment.

However, the drug is unlikely to be widely available until it is approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice).

The institute, which advises on National Health Service best practice, is not expected to issue guidance on rimonabant for another two years.

At a cost of £55.20 (€78) per patient per month, or £1.97 (€2.85) per tablet, if even a fraction of that 20pc group is treated, as is envisaged, the NHS could have to pay out billions.

The drug's manufacturers, Sanofi Aventis, argues that rimonabant represents good value for money when set against the £7bn (€10.14bn) per year cost of tackling the problems connected with obesity and being overweight.

Anthony Barnett, a diabetes specialist from the University of Birmingham, who took part in yesterday's launch at the Science Museum in west London, said that it would be a "very great shame" if use of the drug was limited by funding issues.

"The real question is, can we afford not to treat?" Professor Barnett said.

In a series of trials involving more than 6,000 patients in America and Europe, around a quarter of those taking rimonabant lost more than 10pc of their initial body weight after a year.

About a half lost more than 5pc of body weight. Waist circumference, seen by many experts as a more important measurement, was reduced by between six and seven centimetres.

Significant improvements in measures of glucose control, cholesterol and triglyceride blood fats were also seen. These went far beyond what might be expected simply by losing weight.

For example, levels of high-density lipoprotein "good" cholesterol, which reduces heart disease risk, showed an 8 to 9pc increase, but only half of this was due to weight reduction. (© The Times, London)

just what the world needs another f'in miracle drug to con the masses into thinking that they can be "healthy" while still eating **** and not exercising. The only people that will benefit from this are people who unfortuanatly will have to use it as a drug for life as no matter what they do, they would put the weight back on once they come off it, and for who things like lipotrium are not advisable for the time lenght they'd have to stay on it.

The money would be better spent properly educating people about food and their diets and how to exercise properly

    Here here jsb.
If we were to spend half of the energy, half the money invested in these sham drugs educating and feeding the nation with nutrient dense foods we'd be 10 times better off.

I can almost guarantee there are other reprecusions of taking any of these drugs.
You get fat for a reason..

Eating too much empty calories makes you crave more and more to get what your body requires. Lack of excercise etc. etc.

There are no magic pills. Drugs supress, not cure.
If a company could patent and control the simple matter of eating green vegetables they'd be marketed as the biggest micracles causers on earth. There's alot more to be made in drugs, clearly..

    What a f*cking disgrace.

I went from 23 stone to 16.5 in 9 months by only changing what I eat and now they have a drug which not only allows you to lose (up to) 10% of your bodyweight but also controls/affects the way your body is supposed to work?

People should definitely explore what they are doing wrong with their attempts to lose weight instead of trying to find a better pill or machine.

This drug seems to work on the CB-1 receptor (as does cannabis, but in this case it's a cannabid-antagonist) so it's a behaviourally rather than physiologically altering drug. Just like cannabis stimulates the 'muchies', rimonabant numbs binge cravings. Guys on mindandmuscle.net have used it at fairly riducous doses and it's effects are apparently pretty subtle - which isn't going to appeal to most people that seek out diet pills. It could however be a funny joke to give your pot smoking friends some 'anti-pot' some evening :D .

I guess the main problem is that it never really takes long for this type of medicine to become public domain.

Remember there was a time when Lipotrim needed to be perscribed by a doctor.

However, due to the nature of people looking for the easy way out this type of thing always ends up becoming available to all.

Maybe i should market "Dr. Dragan's Weight Loss Pills : They don't do anything but hey, you'll feel like you tried!"

    History says you're wrong.

Dragan that's a pretty good idea. You could make tablets with about 5g of fibre in each, to be taken 6 times a day with a pint of water. That way they'ld probably actually work for most people too :D .
