Injured my Back

I went to the gym on monday with a little tweak in my back which I put down to soreness from working it out at my previous session. Monday night after the gym I could barely move my back. My back is still very sore and stiff today. I think I have pulled muscles in my back so i'm looking for a bit of advice. Should I just stay out of the gym and rest up until the injury is gone or could I go and work out other parts of my body?

My goals in the gym are building strenght and size but I also like to do some cardio aswell to keep general fitness levels up.

personally i'd stay away until better, if i wasn't improving or it happened again i get some professional advice from a qualified person (physio?)

JAK has experience in this area and may be able to advise. It could be more than just pulled muscles mate so take care!

ive had some long term back problems and no matter how much you try to isolate muscles during exercises invariably others are used and pressurised so id stop doing weights altogether for a few days to a week and if it doesnt get better go to a physio

Should I stay away from cardio work aswell?? The pain has eased over the last couple of days but I can still feel it. I notice first thing in the morning it is really bad, but if I go for a walk it seems to ease a bit. Could this be because of warming up the muscles??

I had something similar once which kept me out of the gym for a week or two.
Went to a physio in the end and he advised me do some exercise stretches.
    Injury healed up fine.

It is probably best to err on the side of caution and get checked out by your physio before you go back.

It is no good going back when you think you are better and end up doing worse damage.

I have pulled muscles in the left side of my back twice in the past 18 months. It is extremely painful for a few days but then eases up. I could hardly stand up / walk when I did this. My advice - stay away from cardio until you cannot feel the twinge.

generally if it doesnt go away in a week or two you shud go to see a physio and id stay away from cardio aswell as that can exercise your muscles just as much, only in a different way

You don't say what part of your back you injured.
I have a weak lower back and find that if I do some of the following exercises as a warm-up before a real workout, I am less likely to have problems. They stretch the muscles and make them more limber.
