Yeah Pirates is the movie that I have been looking forward to the most. I have no interest in Superman but ill be first in the queue for this one!

Am sure it will be entertaining but I wouldn't really be "looking forward to it" as such. Again though, I'm sure i'll like it, but I won't be pushed about seeing it. Although no doubt I will be the first in line, as the girlfriend has been chanting about it for months and telling me to shut up everytime the trailer comes on in the cinema....for the last 30 times we've gone.

I'm really tempted to see if i can get a shift on bar for the premiere - "Do you need a drink Kiera? ;)"

You just know there's going to be loads of annoying bastards at every showing of this film.

Might try and hit this the Saturday morning after it comes out... the probability of jabbering idiots is severly lessened in the morning.

Finally, a good 'ol action movie.

I am trying not to read any reviews or see too many trailers for it as I don't want to build it up to be something it's not or be put off by some crappy reviewer with his head up his own ar$e. But I am looking forward to it and parts of it were filmed in Oregon..my home state!

That wouldnt be too difficult seeing as the first one was childish drivel.

I really liked the original, I'd say this should be fun if the dialogue is as good as the first.

yeah i agree the dialogue was excellent and Johnny Depp makes it that bit better again! from the trailers there appears to be much more action in this film which looks good!!

I couldn't never quite understand in the first film exactly why they went to such great lenghts to stop the pirates from lifting the curse from themselves.

i'm in the same boat as you (YARRR)... sorry.

i enjoyed the first one, but i'm not crazy about it. very enjoyable popcorn stuff, but nothing to go ape about. i'll go see the second one no doubt, but i'd be just as happy waiting for the dvd

its excellent. Saw it last night.

Very long, Orlando gets a lot more of the screen time, JD is excellent again.
Worth watching in the cinema definitely. The Davy Jones stuff is a bit strange when it starts but i guess thats more the fantasy of it.

Be hard pressed to see a better movie this year for sheer Indiana Jones (on land and sea) kind of excitement.

i have to admit i've been wondering about the davey jones aspect, it was what they first started pushing the marketing on about 12-9 months ago (jack acting weird and being scared of the ghostie pirates) but they don't even mention it in the recent tv promos , left me very confused

Saw this at the hotpress screening the other night

    Its savage but reeeeealy long
Johnny depp is amazing as is davy jones and his crew - i honestly have to say the special effects were top notch lotr's good and mostly all in full daylight too , the ending has a small but big twist that will make you wna clap if your a fan of the last movie - the story is well done and gore verbinski is a fantastic director realy realy impressive sets the detail was stunning - and now for the bad news orlando bloom is close to unbearable in this film the guy just can not act to save his life his run off the mill drama colledge delivery is just awfull kiera knightly is preety good but the film is johnny depps ..its a good 2 and half hours but it does go by quickly , the best scene involves johnny depp and a pole spliced with a crew in a giant round cage made of bones fantastic .your kids will love it

    7.5 outa 10

Very good movie that did not let me down. The sets and the action were brilliant and the special effects rival anything that has been made so far. A bit slow at the start I thought but once it got into it then the action and laughs didnt stop. Ill write a proper review on the review thread.

    9/10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Just back from it... It's absolutely brilliant... a lot of fun...

The Kracken is amazing in it, I grew up watching Ray Harryhausen films so I really enjoyed seeing it.

Some wonderful sword fights in it too... especially the water wheel one.

i am so very happy to say that after a year of sh*te we finally get a proper blockbuster.

    oh thank god.

oh and the ending had me going nuts...
Barbosa was my favourite character after jack sparrow

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭trillianv

Well I wasn't disappointed by the film at all. It was a tad long but it was all worth it. The slap stick comedy bits were the best IMO. Johnny Depp was brilliant as Jack. I agree on the Davy Jones bit being a bit strange at first but then it made sense and I thought they did a good job making it real. Fantastic!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 411 ✭✭Faerie

I have to say I was quite disappointed with it. The first one is much better. This one seems to just be a bridge between the first and third films, and isn't much of a film in its own right. The plot is a little all over the place and I think Keira Knightley's acting is getting worse! She tends to look like she's sucking on lemons normally but her scenes with Johnny Depp are particularly bad!
Although a big plus for the film is the way Norrington has become extremely hot! The wigs never did much for him. Orlando Bloom is only hot as Legolas IMO and Johnny Depp may be a great actor and he's very beautiful, but he doesn't do it for me!

Good way to assess the validity of the reviewer is how much of the review is spent commenting on the attractiveness of various characters.

I loved it. I liked the first one, but this one was suitably epic and impressive, and I was thoroughly entertained, looking forward to part 3. There is a boatload of niggles, but overall this is sheer class, bang for your buck, adventure all the way to the hilt. The action doesn't often stop, and when it does, the dialogues and drama are usually damn good. 8.5 I'd say.

Yeah, teh beautiful people syndrome makes me laugh. Oh keira's lips..... mmmm.

Girlfriend didnt like it, i thought it was ok. Could have done with more action and less talk IMO.

I thought it was full of action. Some of the fight scenes went on for ages!
The plot was odd, too many twists and turns in it.
Johnny Depp is going overboard with his character; I felt he overplayed the idiocy and drunkeness of it. Didn't appeal to me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,792 ✭✭✭J.R.HARTLEY

it was a good little movie however the were very many lazy elements of the script,
    e.g.
you can't threaten the life of a returning character to try and generate concern in your audience, they know he'll be back therefore they aren't concerned, this relates to jack, will and norringtons swordfight, you know all three would survive so it was more a drawn out overlong stunt then a genuine nervous moment.
you can bring someone back from the dead obviously in this as barbosa died in the first so what fear does death hold, our heroes can be immortal, again a weak plot device, their risking of their lives is meaningless and degraded by the worst twist since spocks inner eyelids.

the film was a massive rip off of empire strikes back, we begin with our heroes finally tracked down and owing a debt repayment, the evil East india trading company/British Empire (galactic empire) is in charge of everything, our clean cut hero finds his father,
our rogue hero is sacrificed at the end AND it's his former friend /betrayer(lando/barbossa) that leads the search party at the end

I thought the film was a bit of a turd to be honest.

Nothing in it really caught me as being that good. Even the character of Jack Sparrow get's a bit tiring half way through this, the second film.

Plus it was quite long and too bloodt aimless. It didn't even finish telling any story. Whereas the first "episode" in the trilogy had a definite ending, a resolution, this had none. I was listening to a Mark Kermode review yesterday and he put it well when he said, "If Stanley Kubrick can go from the Dawn Of Man to the emergence of a new existence in a bit over two hours and you can't even resolve a second episode in a trilogy in 150 minutes then you are just. Not. Trying."

Oh, and I enjoyed the first one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

I quite enjoyed it, im all for action and this had it. I think the plots messiness was sue to them preparing for PotC3 and not focusing enough on this film... still, seeing
Barbossa at the end, the Kraken and its bukkakke, that wheel fight and the general madness of Depp made it worthwhile for me.

But then again, i can see confusion in having Keith Richards in the next one... it'd be like putting a mirror up to Jack Sparrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,426 ✭✭✭Roar

i didn't really enjoy it to be honest. I was getting fidgety in my seat which is a sure sign that it was over long.. Nothing seemed to happen in two and a half hours, and the wafer thin plot seemed secondary to big mad action sequences, which weren't very good at all
what was the bloody point of that fight on the waterwheel? that Kraken monster just didn't do it for me either, seemed totally out of place.

Johnny Depp's performance seemed a little off to me as well, i cant put my finger on it but it just didn't seem to work this time round.. When did kiera knightly fall in love with Deppster and how did that plot strand seem to completely pass me by? first she's getting married to that plank off wood Bloom, then all of a sudden she wants a piece of the depp (which my girlfriend said was perfectly understandable!)... Enjoyed barbossa's return at the end though, even though i had a feeling he would show up at some point.. all in all i thought it was a big mad mess... very disappointing

Well Buckle my swash it was fantastic.
Action , comdey, comic, slapstick, scarey, freaky, personal delemias, exploration about what make a person good and the love story.
oh oh oh and Kraken bukake !
Can't wait to see it again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Indeed, tentacles and bukkake, together at last.

Some more plot resolution would have been nice. But damn it if there wasn't some very interesting stuff in there. The fishman pirates were (apart from shark dude, who was just dull) expertly done, an incredibly cool concept that was alternately creepy and hilarious depending on the situation (Hermit crab man ftw!), and it was so, so gratifying to hear the characters poke fun at Orlando Bloom's shall we say, "elfishness" ("He's in love. With a GIRL.").

Damn well worth the watch, and I really, really want to see the next one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,666 ✭✭✭savemejebus

An ok movie but I think it could have done with losing a few scenes, for example the 3way swordfight was a bit pointless and very much a 'look at what we can do stunt'.

also unimpressed with some of the kracken blue/green screen sections, they looked pretty rough.

yeah the movie was a bit long and the story line just meandered.
the best thing was the costumes of them pirates such as davy jones and captain turner. yeah the 3 -way sword fight was not interesting at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭trillianv

I think it was best described in a recent review I read in Empire (i think...) it was half a film...So i just kept remembering it that way. 2 & 3 are basically one big film and this was just the first half. That was how I overlooked certain problems with plot. But then again...I just enjoyed it as a fun film. I wasn't looking for an oscar plot line and the comedy aspect was well done!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 448 ✭✭Agent Orange

This film was too long, it was tiring, the plot was convoluted for some reason best known to the film-makers. It also wasn't funny in the least.

Biggest opening in Hollywood history, though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

I liked the first one - and this one was very good but not in the same class. The effects were grade A - keira knightley is very cute but does seem to be getting worse at acting (going by a couple of the scenes in it) imo.

The rest of them were ok - it didnt really seem too drawn out for a 2.5 hr movie that isnt bad going.
I did think that it was only half a movie though. Same feeling I got at the end of matrix 2 - like wtf - weres the rest ?

I knew they were making a third one but thought they would be standalone movies not kill bill type of **** with one story over 2 movies = more money.

Not great I'm afraid, bit of a mess. Pirates 2 is to Pirates 1 as Reloaded is to the Matrix. Hopefully the final one won't be the Revolutions of the trilogy.

Turns out they have lined up Keith Richards (who Depp based J. Sparrow on) to make a cameo appearance as Jacks father in the 3rd movie.
    I'll say if the 3rd movie does well, they'll def have a 4th and maybe a 5th....

thats looking in danger since his accident with the tree , they had to postpone the stones tour to let him recouperate, and the tour may spill over into the production dates for 3 making him unavailable, really hope they can work something out.

Nope apprently he'll have on screen timeof up to about 5 minute sor so, apprently now. Its only a cameo, he's not going to be a character or anything.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 468 ✭✭MrJones

I went to see it on Friday and I thought it was similar to the first one, except that Bloom and Knieghtley are central characters in the second one (as the first one) with no storyline or purpose for them to be there. meanwhile jack sparrow is wandering around on the periphery and the audience is watching him to see what his next move is.
i thought the guy from the office(gareth) gave a really good performance.
overall 7.5 out of 10 for the costumes/special effects/jack sparrow. To judge it on the storyline id give it 2/10.

really enjoted this, much preferred it to the first one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I didn't think it was too bad. It was a laugh that really just served to lead into part 3. There were parts I loved,
the three way fight was done well and I wished they made the fight with the 2 other pirates and Kiera Knightley fighting the Jones' boys a little longer. Plus Depp facing the Kraken was very funny.
    and bits I didn't
the bit on the wheel was too over-the-top (excuse the pun), Barbosa appearing was too predictable and the the kraken was a bit rubbish (how could he take the first ship without appearing but by the time he gets to the Black Pearl he has to climb up the sides?)

It was worth the watch just don't expect too much. I actually had too major gripes witht he film:
When Bootstrap Bill first appears he was the spitting image of Barbosa, which really confused me (but then again, I'm not that bright!)

    and also:
Why was the monkey still undead? Was he under a different Aztec curse?

You have to stay until after the credits of PotC:TCotBP for this one
The monkey steals a coin from the cursed treasure and thus becomes cursed again and undead.

Generally enjoyed this one. The fact that there's plot issues and characterisation issues unresolved is fine, in that it's one half of a longer story. I can withhold judgement on that until then. The running time is a leeetle long but I was mostly entertained, even if it's really a number of set pieces strung together.

Of course I felt again Depp's Jack Sparrow held the movie together. Wasn't in enough scenes for my liking whereas Orlando Bland had far too many (is it just me or was his performance pretty damn woeful? Why is he still being employed in Hollywood? Is the teenage fanbase that loyal?). The others all reprising their role performed well.

On or two occassions the Kraken looked kinda ropey but that was more than made up for by the wonderful design and makeup gone into Davey Jone's and the crew of his ship - fantastic work.

P'raps not the immediate fun feeling of the first (part of which came from having next to no expectations), but it left me still wanting to see the final installment and pretty satisfied after three hours in a cinema seat. That's as good as sign as any these days for a Hollywood blockbuster.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 318 ✭✭coolcon

I enjoyed watching it (for the action, humour...) but I sort of felt at the end that we'd got nowhere. I thought, however, that Depp was great in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

I really really enjoyed it, it was another great swash buckling adventure, and I giggled constantly for about 10 minutes at
*bang* 'look an undead monkey' :D
. Davey Jones crew (especially himself) was done brilliantly, although I thought the effects on the Kraken were pretty patchy, most of the time it looked excellent, but there were a few very dodgy looking scene's with it.

    Overall Id give it:
    8/10

Just for being so damn fun to watch, cant wait for the third installment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,552 ✭✭✭✭GuanYin

I have to say, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first, not saying it was a worse film, perhaps the surprise an dnovelty of the first one was missing here.

That said I *did* enjoy it (except perhaps,
for the fact that Bloom's character and indeed Bloom him self lived through the film)
    .

My friend works in film journalism and sent me the draft script for POTC3 which was leaked (and then withdrawn) a few weeks ago. It may still be online tho.

Read it and the 3rd one seems much darker and there are ALOT of clues in Pirates 2 toward sthings that are unveiled in PotC3.
