Ok, it seems that a lot of people have had problems with gyms before such as not being able to cancel their memberships or being over charged.

Here are a few ways of going about sorting out these issues, others would be appreciated....
    citizens advice,
    solicitors letters,
    small claims court,
    media,
    freedom of information act...

When you are cancelling your membership/any direct debityou should also cancel your direct debit with your bank. Your bank will not pay out any money without your permission, you are their customer afterall and not the company who presents the DD.

Also the consumer protection agency a lot of companies will react to the telephone call from these people.

I'm not saying that people aren't having genuine problems cancellign mambership with their gyms.

But one thing I have noticed in the gym I go to (Crunch - Templebar), is people trying to cancel a few months after joining the gym, but then argueing with the staff when they are informed that they signed a 12 month membership agreement when they joined.
When I joined the gym, I was handed a the terms and condition's and told to read them, it clearly stated that it was a you had to join for a minimum of 12 months, anyone else I have seen joining has also been been given and told to read the T&C BEFORE THEY SIGNED ANYTHING.

If you don't read the T&C or deciede to ignore them, it's your fault its not the gyms.

If on the other hand you are having genuine problems, feel free to go through one of the above chanels, although how the freedom of information act will help is beyond me.

becuase people are having problems with GYMs telling them they never asked for membership 2 be cancelled etc. a freedom of information FOI request forces the gym to release all the customers information that they have on record.

i still have the original contract which i signed when starting off at the gym, on the terms/conditions, if you leave before the year is up, on rejoining you need to repay the joining fee.
by using the freedom of information act (suggested by a solicitor and citizens advice) they can not delete files and the are required to give all relevent information to you. i have gone down this route as the gym have said that they have no record of me cancelling. if this is true then as they know the date i went in to cancel my membership, they wont have a missing form. (each cancellation form is sequentially numbered as on any docket)
