I've often asked ,do you know a really frightening movie and no one I know seems to be into them.

Can anyone recommend a good one ,one that's actual concept is s**t in your pants stuff.

I haven't a clue what to look for ,the last "scary" one was the Ring.
    I liked that one

    Any ideas??

    Brian.

    The Thing!

I still jump during the scene where the lights go out and the guy with glasses approaches the door and something passes infront of him.....

Have jacobs ladder ,watched it a fair few times .
You've all named films I've seen except for The Thing and Pang brother's The eye.

I've asked the right people so. :)

    Thanks for the replies

    audition :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,332 ✭✭✭311

    is the audition good ??
I tried a few from japan/china a while ago ,msd psycho or something .
I thought they were just a little too ambitious for me ,didn't seem to get it.

I like the idea of japanese/chinese horror ,it's got a kind of natural cult look to the filiming or something.

Anyhows thanks for that ,will try it with the pang brothers one first.

    Cheers all .

Any films I can think of have already been mentioned.

"The Descent" is and underrated horror.
It got released at the same time as a similer film called "the cave" and both films were forgotten quick.

"Silent Hill" should be out on DVD soon, its not great and is similer to Jacobs ladder but inferior.

The 1978 version of "Invasion of the body snatchers" is very good.

To be honest horor films that are gunuinely unnerving are few and far between. Games actully seem to be a better medium for the horor genre believe it of not.

in the mouth of madness is john carpenter not japanese...still very cool film.

I know exactly what you mean ,but I'm just not the gamer type.
I did play silent hill actually ,on the PS2 ,but the whole game thing wears out with me fairly sharpish.

Maybe if they invented a home movie that had voice guidance and the characters asked what to do at various intervals ,and some bad ass zombie comes into screen and tears your adams apple out  :D

    Anyways ,

    Thanks

Event Horizon is a decent effort. You do need the lights out and to be alone but it's got a nice kick to it. Jacob's Ladder, and audition are the same, worth seeing. The Japanese version of the Grudge is pretty good (if you liked the ring) but watch the Japanese version of Ring 2, not the yank one (they did ok with The Ring, but butchered the second installment).
Some people find the Blair Witch project terrifying, but I dunno. I've seen it three times and it only scared me once (when I was in an old, creaky house with the lights off, literally no more than 10 feet from a forest)

Hopefully those will be of some help. I should mention though: Audition isn't scary scary... it's something else. And whoever mentioned The Eye has an eye (sorry) for good cult films.

Thanks snoogans ,I forgot about event horizon ,that is a scary one alright
    the evil machine .
I like the idea of something that cannot be fully explained but understood.

    This forum is great .

Thanks, glad to be of help for once (I'm normally the token "evil bastard" on forums). I read before that the director of Event Horizon wanted to go waaaaaay further with the film, but the studio cut him off before he could complete some of the more ambitious sickness. There is still (allegedly) a boatload of footage cut form the film with a pair of shears.

    Freaky movies...

    Event Horizon
    The Grudge
    R Point
    In the Mouth of Madness
    Jacobs Ladder

There alot of horror films but very few ones that can make you feel uneasy....good thread! Movies like The Descent are very good but not exactly frightening....

The Grudge and The Grudge 2. Part 2 is highly regarded as scary.

The Thing and Alien still do it for me. Didn't think much of Event Horizon. It started well and then travelled into pointless action film territory
Especially with the black guy who gets blasted out of the ship and then comes to the rescue at the end:rolleyes:

They probably seem too obvious, but have you tried some of the classics like Halloween, The Fog, Friday 13th etc ? Most people dismiss these, but if you've never seen them (shame on you!) they'll show you how it was done before hollywood decided to try and destroy every genre of cinema they could.

I'm off into town now for some goodies ,hopefully I'll pick a couple up.

One film I think is scary aswell ,the shining ,which is one I love .

    Thanks for the replies

    Brian.

hmm Arachnapobia, maybe not frightening but had me jumping, I haven't seen it in a few years,

Also I didn't find the grudge that scary unless you're talking about the japanese original which i never saw.

I tried a lot of shops around town and was dissapointed with the selection they had.
One shop seemed to be on the wavelenght I was on ,Laser on Andrews street.
I seen audition in HMW grafton street for 34.99 and in laser I got it for 19.99.
Also I got The Eye and The Descent ,a helpful guy downstairs in Laser told me in the mouth of madness is not european released yet.

Well thanks ,I've got some horror ahead of me

Will try to rent the rest if possible .

Watched the Eye by the pang brothers last night ,I was expecting the typical asian horror thing ,but it was good start and gradual build up.Nicely made.

    Thanks everyone for your recommendations

Wolf Creek is the most disturbing movie I have ever watched. It's pretty dull at the start. But once it kicked off I have never, ever wanted to turn a movie off more than that. If I had been at the cinema I might have had to walk out.

It's not supernatural, it's just about a creepy guy in the Australian outback.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

Nudged on by this thread, I rented some films last night (Nightwatch, Pet Sematary, Jacob's Ladder and Switchblade Romance).

Forgoing my... *ahem* problems with Switchblade Romance, I'd just like to say that Jacob's Ladder is one of the few films I've ever seen where you can really understand how ****ed up the main character has become.

You must lead a very sheltered life if thats the most disturbing film you've ever seen! I thought it was disturbing too - disturbing how over hyped and disappointing it was. :p

the descent has to be the most gruesome film I've seen ,
me being a plumber could relate to the start of the film right away.

Looks like i'm on sleeping tablets for a while after that one :(

    Thanks

I have, and it's not that good. Kinda boring. Like, you know the way lots of Asian horrors are very steady with their story and always teeter on a thin line between quite boring and very entertaining? This one fails to be very entertaining. It has a few scary scenes though.

I really like it. It is slow, and quite long as well, but very rewarding imo. There are some great scenes.

He has.....issues I think :) You should check some of his other films if you liked Audition, such as Full Metal Yakuza, Izo, Visitor Q and the infamous Ichi The Killer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Is full metal yakuza any good? been meaning to watch it but never have.

I for one hated ichi the killer, thought it was pretty poor.

dead or alive was a great movie - until the very end, WTF was all I could manage after seeing the last 5 minutes. You have to see it to understand.

A couple of people had mentioned earlier about ,The Thing and Pet cemetary ,I haven't actually seen them ,would they be worth hunting for ??.

I've read the full metal yakuza is very good ,said it was a kind of funny film ,not stupid but funny in a strange way ??

Silent Hill isnt awfully scary, its great as a fan movie and some gross out bits here and there but nothing really to write home about... except for
woman getting her skin ripped off, Pyramid Head in general and the bed of barbed wire
