Cod liver oil

    Went on the prowl last weekend for a big bottle of cod liver oil. I know you can get the seven seas stuff in the supermarket but I said I would check it out in a few health food shops anyway. H&B do stock cod liver oil but in other two different (different companies) health food shops I got the same reply. i.e. we don't stock cod liver oil because it is too difficult to find a good source. Generally the common ones you do get are from older fish and contain too many toxins due to the polluted seas and the shallow depths these fish swim at. Also the poor old cods are being over fished and are becoming more scarce. These guys recommended I buy Eskimo something or other capsules. They have a very high concentration of omega 3 and are taken from deep sea fish.

    What do you think is cod live oil becoming a thing of the past?

    Do you mind me asking why you want cod liver oil in particular?

    If its for omega-3 flax, walnut and canola oils are also good sources, although flax is unsuitable for cooking. Fish oils will have higher levels of EPA and DHA (two more types of oils) that are necessary for a healthy cardiovascualr system and healthy brain tissue respectively. Oily fish (salmon, mackerel) are great whole-food sources of omega-3 and EPA/ DHA.

    Although cod are not oily fish the omega-3 is extracted from their liver.

    and Nollaig, the supermarket versions tend to be over-processed and very refined so they won't carry the same 'natural' ingredients as the better quality oils.

    I already take Udo's oil but my other sources of oils/fats would be from avakados, butter, olive oil, mixed nuts, dairy etc. I know I am getting the omega 3 from the nuts and the Udo's oil. The cod liver oil gives an extra boost of Omega 3 and EPA.

    I eat Salmon maybe once a week. I like fresh mackerel, preferably straight off the fishing line. Once a mackeral is over two days dead they become horrible. Its not easy to get the fresh ones (except on holidays).

    If you're getting oily fish in twice a week you should be fine, but you can get fish oil capsules that have high EPA + DHA concentrations if you're particularly worried.

    Thanks G'em. However I was more interested in a discussion on the merits of cod liver oil.

    Is it true that cod liver oil is no longer what it used to be? Or is this just a load of scare mongering from health food shops in an effort to sell you more expensive products? Is the supermarket seven seas stuff alright?
