They both have their uses, casein is a slow digested protein, whey is fast. Casein is best before bed so you get protein for a few hours where as whey is best after a workout or during the day so you get it into your system quickly...

whey and casein are essentially just two different types of protein. Whey is fast acting, that is it will have entered your bloodstream within about 20-40 minutes after consuming it, whereas casein is a slow-release protein- it coaggulates in the stomach and gets released over a period of time, generally peaking at 4-5 hours but lasts up to 12.

So straight after a workout whey is better, to make sure that quality protein is available for your muscles to begin repairing themselves. But last thing at night a slow release casein protein will enable your body to keep repairing itself overnight. Casein is the protein found in milk, so having a whey shake made with milk is a good way of getting casein in without having to buy seperate casein supplements.
