That time of year again.

    Hi everyone.
It's that time of year again when I've decided it's time to get back into shape. Over the last four years I've been putting on weight due to pumping too many pints, if you get me. I've knocked the drink on the head and I'm changing my diet considerably. I was never a big eater, I usually eat small and often, as opposed to three big meals a day. I don't think I've ever actually finished a meal in my life. All of the junk food in my diet has now been cut out as well. But my diet is not the reason for creating this thread. What I seem to lack is motivation. I'd be going well for two weeks or so, and I'd feel better than I ever have about myself, and I would start to notice improvement but then I'd slack off again. Does anyone have any advice with regards to this? I've started taking up kickboxing every Monday which is excellent training wise. My plan is to eat healthily, cut out the booze, and exercise regularly. It's the third part that I'm having trouble with, as I said. Myself and two mates go to the gym together, but alot of the time this falls through and that's where the problem is. I rely on one of them for a lift to the gym, it's not possible to commute to it via public transport, and more often than not he cannot make it. In times like this, would going for a jog and doing sit ups and push ups be adequate enough exercise?

    Cheers,
    Peter.

what i would suggest to anybody who is generally jsut trying to lose weight is that one of the things you should be doing is just trying to make your lifestyle more active as oppose to just going to the gym i.e. take up things that you enjoy if goign to the gym is your thing go there but you could just as easily go running, swimming, cycling, dancing, rock climbing, windsurfing hill walking......
So basically if you can change your lifestyle then you don't always have to worry about going to the gym. So if running works for you do it that combined with sit-ups, press ups and other bodyweight exercises will do you just as well as going to the gym and you may enjoy it more

Cheers for the advice, I've done just that. The kickboxing is actually a better workout than I thought, and I'm running for an hour everyday now. The difference is amazing, and I feel so god damn healthy now too. Getting up in the very early hours of the am is no longer a problem.

I would suggest you check out www.crossfit.com , a lot of stuff that you can do pretty much anywhere anytime....it's hard...maybe the hardest thing i have ever done tbh but it's worth it.
