Xbox Ftp Problems.....

k, just after xmas i built myself a new pc, it is running very sweetly at the moment and havent had a thing go wrong on me...thank god

Before xmas however i had been unemployed, and well kinda addicted to XBC and the xbox in general! so when i got the new job at xmas, the pc was the first thing to be replaced...when i replaced the p.c i couldnt get the xbox to connect to it....tried EVERYTHING ...i mean EVERYTHING trying to get it to work but with no avail!!!

now, i have some time off now, and im dying for a game of halo...its been six months people!!! 6!!! so after putting this on the long finger for long enough, im determained to get this, and xbmc working properly!!

ok so ive tried every ip config. setting ,and i know the default gateway needs to be the same as the pcs ip and all

so im thinking to must be the settings or permissions of windows xp, which is professional corporate edition.

i have ruled out a fault in my ethernet port as i can connect to my modem/router to it. and ruled out a fault with my xbox as my laptop can connect to it! i just cant get on to connect to the other!!!

so all i can really think of is permissions or something!!

i connect directly via my ethernet port on my pc to my xbox using a crossover cable....my modem/router is connected via usb..

oh and on a small other note, when i built me new pc, the old modem i had wouldnt work on it for some unknown reason! so i was sent this new modem by BT Broadband it is a zyxel prestige 600 series....so i don't know maybe this could be conflicting with me connecting to other devices?!?!

thanks a million for any help you can give me...i am seriously p!ssed with this...and its been 6 long months without a good old game of team slayer on coagulation!!

I presume this is another, unfamiliar use of FTP?

Is your console chipped or soft modded? All the info you need is here - http://www.xbox-scene.com

iit is chipped alright....and yes i have followed all the guides on xbox scene, but i still cant get it working, just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with the same router maybe??

If the xbox is connected directly to the pc, the router isn't your problem. What ip address are you using for your xbox and what ip address are you assigning to your pc. Try pinging your xbox. I use flashfxp to ftp to my xbox. I'll check my settings when I get home and post them later on if they are any different from yours. My firewall was preventing me from ftping to my xbox, you've probably tried that already though.

yeah took off the firewall...at the moment my ip settings are
    xbox
    ip: 192.168.0.100
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.1

these are just a set i saw on a forum and tried them...ive tried various different set-ups

    P.C
    ip:192.168.1.100
    Subnet:255.255.255..
    Gateway : blank

    Have the dns blank also

im only thinking it could be a conflict with the router as it has never worked on this pc/router

Your xbox ip address is the problem. It needs to be in the same range as your pc so they can see each other. Change your xbox ip address to 198.168.1.150
and that should sort it out. Let me know if it worked. If not, I 'll just post up my setting when I get home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

changed it there and didn't work....ive tried a load of different ip addresses, but just can't it connected!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭mayto

put gateway and dns server as 192.168.1.1 for both pc and xbox. usual ip setting for pc would be 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 for the xbox.but your ip's should be fine as the gateway and dns server are the same.put in these settings and it will work.

I had windows xp professional before and i couldnt really share files with the xbox. This was only after i changed a few security settings though. It was working before that.
    xbox
    ip: 192.168.0.100
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.1

    P.C
    ip:192.168.1.100
    Subnet:255.255.255..
    Gateway : blank

Is this to demonstrate the various settings you have tried? Or what you are currently using? I dont know if im right but it doesn't look like those two machines are going to see each other with that setup.

    Try
    Pc
    ip: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet :255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.254

    Xbox
    ip:192.168.1.3
    Subnet :255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.254

Of course, thats what DCHP usually assigns for me, but i use it to go static sometimes too. Are you looking to set up multiplayer support like xlink kai or similar? That was a pain in the arse for me the last time i tried. Had it working four hours later...

And also, see if you can connect from your pc to your xbox using an ftp client or this(Cxboxtool).

Use these settings if you have cxboxtool.
    blah4jj.th.jpg

    Good luck with this.

    no dice there.....

tried pinging xbox ip of 192.168.1.150 and timed out as did flash ftp

had 'usual' settings on xbox ip, but wasnt getting anywhere

    Try
    Pc
    ip: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet :255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.254

    Xbox
    ip:192.168.1.3

tried that and still timing out on ping....trying to set up xbc and kai. now that u mention it, this is not the same copy of windows i had on my original pc..do you think because this is corporate edition??

It might have something to do with it but you still should be able to connect to you xbox, there should be nothing stopping you getting into your xbox from the pc. Maybe a firewall??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

nnope have them turned off...actually have mcaffee closed while im trying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭Nick_oliveri

I think it might be the security settings on your version of windows, but im not too good with all of that. If your laptop can connect it must be your windows. I went back to home edition because the version of xp prof i had kept crashing and BSOD'ing without warning.

I wouldnt recommend you change operating system because of this. Try changing a few secuity settings in control panel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

yeah i figured it had to be windows....so is their any other solution other that changing back to home edition...which would really be a pain in the ass!!

What dash have you installed on your xbox? Which dash are you changing the ip settings on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

    evox

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭Nick_oliveri

I use unleashx. Got rid of evoxdash because i wanted something more visually appealing. Im picky.

Its a shame you cant install xp home along with your professional version as dual boot. That would be handy. But im still not convinced that xp prof is the problem as i assume you haven't been making any security changes that could affect a network. You should be able to ftp to your xbox. Dont reinstall OS'es unless its absolutley nessesary.

You can get in with your laptop tho...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

yeah i can get in with my laptop, but use it for work so i dont have admin rights nor can i install any new programs!!! haha!

i want to use XBMC for my new dash...whenever i get it running that it....

What IP settings are on your laptop? just change the IP address on the PC to the same as the laptop just to narrow the problem down. Are you plugging the xbox directly into the PC or are you going through the ADSL router?

Crossover cable isnt it? Suppose it kinda narrows it down. Feckin evil xp prof

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

yeah its an x over cable

ok...so i bought a new pc for a htpc set-up and was fiddling around with the settings on the and was trying to network this pc to it...so had the ip set to dchp...so when i plugged in low and behold....the little computers finally woke up!! only thing was i couldnt set the xbox to assign an ip automatically!

so i waited to see what address the computer had assigned to my ethernet port and changed the xbox to suit.....and low and behold!!..............i have a connection!!!! Don't ask me why it hasnt worked before, cos i have tried it, although i have been fiddling with the advanced settings on tcp/ip and on the security settings in control panel!!

can't get flashftp to work yet, but at least now i have something to work with!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

    Can you ping the xbox?

    Try FileZilla or LeechFTP.
    username:password xbox:xbox to xboxIPaddress port 21
Ensure you've set the same IP settings in UnleashX, XBMC, Avalaunch etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭Nick_oliveri

Static ip doesnt seem to be working for some reason on the pc side. This is one of those things i suppose. Feckin windows. If it wasn't for the plethora of games on teh windozs i would have switched over by now. Is all connected n working now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

no i can't ping the box, request timed out.

i have an ip on the main screen in evox, also in system settings it says there is a link active.

also the little computers are flashing in the taskbar.

    No firewalls either........

also port 21 and xbox xbox are right...

Might you mind specifying exactly what IP info you have set in Evox/UnleashX/whatever dash or app you're trying to FTP to from your PC?
And maybe specify the IP settings of your PC, and whether or not your sharing the internet connection (still on a USB DSL modem yeah?).

Networking (IPaddresses, gateways, subnets, routing etc.) can seem a bit daunting at first.
    It really really isn't.
Google each term (IP Address, subnet mask etc.) and get a good understanding of what each is and what they do and control with respect to letting two boxes talk to each other.
If you can do that, you're well on your way to being able to help others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

ok, Pc is 192.168.0.1 and Console is 162.168.0.2. Dash is evox ,am trying to use ipswitch and flashftp to ftp.

my internet connection is shared and it is still the usb modem!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

with subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0 on both machines, you're on what's known as a /24 (out of 32) subnet.
that is to say (in binary, base-2) 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000 (ie 24 of the 32bits are on). That means the last octet in the IP address of a host on the network can have one of 2^8 = 256 values or 0-255 in decimal (base-10). The network is 192.168.0.0
A host with IP address 192.168.4.1 with a wider subnet won't be able to connect.
    But that's beside the point.

The gateway for your xbox will be your PC's shared connection (192.168.0.1 - forced by windows, which sucks).
If they're set, you've disabled DHCP (auto IP address assignment from a DHCP server ie. your windows machine running in ICS mode), enabled the FTP server and rebooted the xbox after saving the settings, it should come up.
Try changing the skin in Evox to one that displays more info. If you installed it using Slayer's Evox installer there should be a bunch of skins available.

Are you using a cross-over cable or a switch/hub to link the xbox? Or are you using a straight cable? Compare the two heads at either end of the cable.

It's rather strange that you can't ping the xbox from the PC with those settings.

its Def an X over cable!

when you say 'enable the ftp server', do you mean on the xbox??in system settings?? then yes i have done that, and saved and re-booted....

should i just cut my losses and buy a router?? i have a HTPC machine that i want to try and netwrk too, and since i seem to be having very little luck with the xbox, the thoughts of trying to connect this is daunting!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

A router won't help connect your PC to your xbox/htpc any more than a switch or X-over cable would.
However, yeah, definately look at buying one.
Or make a SmoothWall.org box (Pentium100Mhz+, 16Meg+ ram, hdd and 2 network interfaces). As long as your modem can connect to a network card (for bridging mode - modem becomes transparent) you should have zero trouble.
It has all sorts of cool little features too.
