    why doesn't the prisoner run off?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

    What's so bad about the parents that they can't be left with their children of opposite sex? Definitely something fishy going on there :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,019 ✭✭✭SexyD4Lady

    Yusss. Finally got it, after about 30 minutes of persistance.

    Doesn't necessarily mean I have a high IQ or am capable for some Japanese job- just means I have a bit of patience. there must have been a time limit in which they had to complete it.

    Here's a picture to prove I did it.

    Been thinking about that. It makes the puzzle interesting as the rules are slightly counter-intuitive. You have to "think outside the box" (sorry for the corporate cliche). Interesting as well, as stereotypically the Japanese are the most rule based & conforming.

    BTW. Wasn't this game posted a year ago or so? Sure I saw it somewhere else before...

    This reminds me of a puzzle i got in my Computer Science Problem Solving Class.

    Slightly different though. Here it is anyway:

    3 Couples on one side of the river.
    1 Boat that can ferry 2 people at a time.

    Snag : A woman cannot be left alone in the presence of a man, other than her husband.

    How do you get the 3 couples to the opposite side of the river?

    Solve it! :D

    Ill post the solution later if people want it...

    I take it it's the same thing, one needs to sail it back too?

    if anyone is answering this, please use [spo1ler][/spoil3r] tags:)

Because if you were then you really must be clever...

    It can't be this easy can it?:
    a=man b=woman
    1b+2b over, 1b back
    1a+1b over, 1a back
    3a+3b over, 3a back
    1a+2a over, 2a back
    2a+3a over....??

    more snags?

    Yes, you are correct. Someone must sail the boat back to the other side.

    im slightly confused about your answer. Are you using 3 people at a time to move?

    I refer to the first line in your answer :
    1b+2b over

    The boat can only carry 2 at a time... A little trickier with a max capacity of 2 ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,835 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    no,
    1b+2b is woman from couple 1 and woman from couple 2, so only 2 women on that boat going over

    I understand now, but from what i make of it, that wouldnt work because :
    On your 4th line, you have 2 men going over to the 3 women then 1 man comes back. This would leave 1 man and 3 Women on the opposite side of the river. 2 Women left alone in the presence of another man (he maybe with HIS woman on that side, but he can still cheat) and not their husbands...

    The trick is symmetry and dont look at it as "couples". ;)

    Hope that helps...

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,835 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    yeah I thought it was a bit simple, when you said left alone, I thought, as in 1a and 2b on one side alone, I thought it would be ok if there was somebody else there with them, I'll give it a shot later anyway:)

    Here is the answer for the "Couples" Puzzle :
    You break the Couples up into 3 Men and 3 Women, and the trick is to assume that whenever a Man and a Woman are together that they are infact a "Couple". M = Men and W = Women. I will use "||" symbol for the river.

    So...

    3W 3M ||
    1W 3M || 2W
    2W 3M || 1W
    3M || 3W
    3M 1W || 2W
    1M 1W || 2W 2M
    Line Of Symmetry
    2M 2W || 1W 1M
    2W || 1W 3M
    3W || 3M
    1W || 3M 2W
    2W || 3M 1W
    || 3M 3W

    The Line of Symmetry is what i consider to be the turning point of the puzzle, where you now repeat what you have already done, but in reverse. Symmetry is a nice thing! :D
