i'm going to put my neck on the line and fancy Ireland for a historic win against the All Blacks tomorrow. Just a fealing i have , i know in 24 hours hours it will probably be another mauling. But good luck to the boys, particularly as we have no involvement in that other world cup .

Are you making this wild and wonderful prediction because you've studied both sides and have found a couple of weaknesses in the All Blacks game that you are sure Ireland can exploit or are you predicting an Irish victory BECAUSE YOU'RE IRISH?

You know I'll put my neck on the same line and go for Ireland by a short margin - on the back of a good 6 nations, a great celtic league, and a marvellous Heineken Cup plus its winter in New Zealand. Come on Ireland.

Ireland havent a hope in hell of beating the All Blacks.
They are playing in New Zealand.
A good hiding would be a highly likely result.
There is no such thing as a weak All Black team, its like a weak Brazilian soccer team ,still oozes class.
Are we forgetting New Zealand destroyed the Lions not so long ago, that they hockeyed Ireland 45-7 last year and that Ireland have never beaten the All Blacks in 101 years of competition ?

    Muliaina
    Howlett
    Mauger
    Rokocoko
    Kelleher
    McCaw
    Jack
    Mealamu
    Heyman

That's a world-class spine for any team and will ensure a close AB victory, followed by a more comprehensive one next week. I've been round this block too many times to think any different.

For those of you who remember , a really weak Irish team went to NZ in the early ninties, and took the game to the All Blacks in one of the best performances i have seen by an Irish team -- it was unbelievable we should have beat them, they got right in there faces ,and showed them no fear . If tomorrow NZ take us for granted, and this possibly the strongest ever Irish teams gets in the All Blacks faces -- who knows -- just please don't let the All Blacks dictate the game - easier said than done i know.

Ah yes. What a great team that was. The legendary Neville Furlong. The great Ronnie Carey, (feckin' muppet who dropped an attempted pass interception that could have given us a try in the last minute and a three point leadwith the conversion) The immortal Kelvin Leahy.

I know what you're thinking: who the FROCK are those guys?

My theory then was that as that was a third string Irish team, and as the first string had just been whitewashed in the Five Nations, the Kiwis really didn't givbe them any respect (which you have to say is a pretty un kiwi thing to do) and nearly got egg all over their face because of it.

the Kiwis really didn't givbe them any respect

Was that in Brian Ashton's time - and the team were hockeyed in the warm-up games ?

If so, then, for comparison/precedent purposes, it has no relevance to tomorrow.

What odds would the bookies give you on an Irish double?

Ireland to beat New Zealand in Hamilton

    +

Ireland A to beat the Maoris in that rugby stronghold of Santa Clara, California on the same day (Churchill Cup)

Don't laugh. I remember at the end of 1994 somebody saying 'what odds would a bookie have given a year ago on Ireland beating Italy at soccer and losing to Italy at rugby in the same year?'

Somebody could have got a big payout.

You're right - it wasn't Ashton cos it was 1992. I remember now that I was in Florida when the Tests were played and I had to pay a relative fortune for a day-old English broadsheet newspaper to find out the result.

Sadly ABs to win...it's still a pretty strong team and I just can't see them losing at home. I seem to have been around this particular block so many times, hoping against hope that this time a strong, well-prepared Irish team will actually do it. Will be screaming at the telly though, I hate those ABs...

I think it was one of the Murphy's, either Noel or Gerry. (or both)

Ashton's tour was a development tour anyway. I don't think they played any tests on that. They played lowly 2nd division NPC teams and got marmalised.

Was Kelvin all that bad? I thought he was one of these up and coming players who was tipped to be a top player, but for a nasty leg break?

He had a stormer in the first half of that match and then broke his leg. It was his only international and the only time I ever saw him play.

I seem to remember, although the records of his initials tend to disprove it, that he was called after a famous All Black Kelvin Tremain and that his full name was Kelvin Tremain Leahy.

Ouch, didn't realise he broke his leg in the first test! I played club rugby with them briefly when I was starting out, and he was finishing up - even then you could see the skill he must have had.

A long day tomorrow, but nicely drawn out.

    I love early games :)

I'll go for an Irish win as well, no better time.

Cmon Ireland, off to the pub in a bit to catch the game. I agree in relation to the kiwi crowds ive come across they are quieter than church mice! Both in Wellington and Dunedin.

Watching the game on telly at the moment, despite the early al blacks try and Trimbles failure to stop it i think Ireland will loose as giving too much ground away with their defence.

I'm starting to get nervous, could Ireland actually do it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭Irish Wolf

lol a try after the 1st minute - nightmares of the Lions tour!

It looks like they're fairly dominating in the last 10/15 minutes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

16-8 at half time to the Irish.

Lineups are going well for us, scrums are not.

Can we last 80mins, the bench is important now.

Kelleher is off as well, after Best steamed into him with his head.
