I did the honours paper. I thought it was very tough at the beginning. I could not get q3 part (A) Q1 part (A) for ages. Got everything else worked out. Then came back at about 11:50 and got them both worked out. I knew how to do all the paper. Just hope I didn make many blunders. Definately looking at an A1.

I cant believe people thot hons maths was easy! I couldnt do any of it!im so depressed! :( I swear it went awful! What did people get for the last part of 8? I really hated that paper!!!

Eamoss you are right you factorise the equation and solve it.
Or you could use the quadratic formula as an alternitive;)
    (Easier option in my opinion)

I got a nasty looking log for that, -(1/2)logb(b+1)

Is that the same as: [-ln(b-1)]/[2lnb] ???

    It really wasn't easy...

in comparsion to that sham of a 2001 paper, its the same gulf between honours and pass..

it was a very challenging paper, and i reckon the marking scheme will reflect that..

Where are these natural logs comging from? Could someone who did it that way put up their technique, I'm curious.

Can somebody please confirm if a=3 was the answer to Q1 A.
I am talking about the higher level paper.

Has anyone ever seen/done the 95/96 past papers? Absolutely insane.

    I've realised I did 5 c) completely wrong

Also, my friend said he was talking to his cousin, and apaprently all the honours students upped and left the room in protest at the paper. I hope there's uproar over this, because uproar = easier marking scheme

That honours maths paper 1 was f**ked up........I am disgusted.....For them to put a signicant amount of Qs from 'series and sequences' in Question 5 is beyond my comprehension......I hate Question 4s with a passion......Got questions 3,6,8 fully right......but Questions 1,2 and 7 caught me out in their part c's......I got a logb answer for Q2 part c but it was x=Logb[1/sqrootof(b+1)]

    That's what I got alright

    here we go:

    1-b^2x=b^(1+2x)

    1-b^2x=b.b^2x

    1=(b+1)b^2x

    1/(b+1)=b^2x

    ln1-ln(b+1)=2xlnb

    [-ln(b+1)]/[2lnb]=x

Ah, so you just got the log of the 2 sides, I get it. I was more or less the same, but I did

    1/(b+1)=b^2x

    logb1 - logb(b+1) = 2x

You also had the sign wrong in there, the - shouldn;t be in b+1, it loses that when it crosses the equals

No the minus is right hes just changing from a log fraction to two seperate values

does it actually matter if you use loge or logb? spotted the minus, thanks.

I think he meant the minus near the start of the question...

I'd say both are valid solutions in the marking scheme, tbh.

    My way:
